SHOULD I BUY AN EBIKE? MTB TO EMTB?

So my old decrepit body is finally breaking down to the point where I'm considering an E bike.
I've not really been a fan of ebikes over the years, as I think lots of people use them because they can't be arsed to ride up the hill as opposed to any other reason.
A big part of mountain biking for me has always been fitness and the fact that because I know I'll suffer riding up a hill it moderates my drinking and my eating habits.
But the arthritis in my knees and my bad back means i'm at a point where I need some help to take the pressure off.
So is an electric mountain bike the answer?
Should I go from MTB to eMTB?
I decided to rent an E bike for a couple of hours to see what they were really like.
