Dizzy, Nice video of Mike's SCJ Eliminator. You Mach 1 looks like a solid project too. I'm the chubby guy with the Blue 71 Cougar. It was a pleasure to meet you.
I had a 1970 Mach 1 back in the mid ‘70’s. Seeing those 8 tracks, and particularly the Doobie Brothers tape, sure brought back good memories of Friday night cruises! What a cool and rare Cougar!
What a beauty! Not a hot rod hound in my younger days but liked the Cougar very much. It may be thought of as the Mercury version of Mustang but it was its own car. Thanks.
I like your Mustang. Those Cougars were pretty rare, friend in High School had a green one, first I'd ever seen. I was a Mustang guy but was wowed when I saw the friends in 1980. Two years later a place I worked, two guys were buying them up when they found them, one had a red one and the other was blue, plus one they found that was somebody's project. I was jealous.
It was sent off for repair at least once previously ~ it has a sticker on the top of it from the repair shop. It works pretty good still, but when the car gets good and heat-soaked the motor for the player starts dragging.
I love the early Cougars and Mustangs. That Cougar Eliminator is sweet. The only thing I would do to that Cougar is touch up the paint k on n the drivers side C pillar and next to the trunk lid where that old repaired area is, even if it wouldn’t match exactly, it would look better and still be mostly original paint so would still be a survivor.
I've thought about doing some touch up to the worst areas. I even have a bucket of filler and some "color matched" paint in a rattle can. It's not actually original paint though ~ except maybe part of the roof. It's just OLD paint. It's been in several accidents over its lifetime, and there are probably 3 different shades of orange on the car. Not to mention one side has correct stripe decals while the other side they are painted on, LOL! So it's a bit of a mess, but I can drive it anywhere and park it anywhere and not worry about rock chips or door dings - although I still do >.
I was working at a local garage when I was 15 and had the pleasure of doing a valve job on one of these cougars. It was a tight fit this one had A/C PS cruise control anto transmission I drove it on a test drive when I was finished awesome
I'd like to meet the person that designed that body style back then if he's still alive I'd like to shake his hand, that's the best looking body style to ever leave Detroit.
@@DezzysSpeedShop wow crazy.. I too love grabber blue...by my childhood kiddy school there is a guy with a 1970 mach 1 i always loved grabber blue with matte black hood.
Thanks for sharing the video Dezzy, it was great meeting you and chatting! Sorry I didn't have time to go see your Mach 1, but I loved seeing it in this video. Can't wait to meet up again sometime. We definitely need to get our ratty old cars together for pictures 🙂 Eliminators came with a 6k tach except for the Boss 302 cars, which used the 8k tach. Red line on the 428CJ/SCJ was only 5800rpm. Hit Express is a K-Tel "hits" / "mix" tape from 1982. ua-cam.com/video/SF_oP1_IfxM/v-deo.html I have quite a few K-Tel and Ronco tapes. They give me a good variety of old rock to listen to while I'm driving since the car has no FM, and most AM stations now are just talk. What happened to all the oldies stations on AM radio?? LOL!
IN THE LATE '80S ON A JOB HERE IN MANHATTAN. THERE WAS A FELLA TALKING ABOUT HIS 440 CHARGER THAT HE HAD TO PUT CINDER BLOCKS IN THE TRUNK TO KEEP THAT CAR DOWN. THAT'S HOW FAST IT WAS. BUT THE ONE CAR HE DID MENTION THAT HE COULDN'T BEAT THAT WAS FAST AS HELL, THAT BEAT EVERYTHING ON THE STREETS. HE SAID THAT CAR WAS THE COUGAR ELIMINATOR WITH A 428 COBRA JET.
Paint peeling ?? Wasn't just confined to the car lines, there was a problem in which primer/paint absolutely would not stick to the galvanizing on cars or trucks in FOMOCO from the early 1960's on up.
Nah, it's not original paint, it's just OLD paint. Most of the old body filler from accident repairs has exceeded its life expectancy and is starting to flake and peel off, taking the paint with it.
That or you need a short commute! The SCJ gets about 10mpg (highway or city it doesn't change much), and my work is about 4.5 miles away ~ so I'd only have a 1 gallon per day commute for me. Truthfully though, it's not actually "daily" driven. However, I do drive it regularly ~ a few times a week during the dry season here. I take it to work, the grocery store, various local shows, cars & coffee events, plus an occasional longer drive like up to Tacoma for the Cougar Club PROWL event. I really do love driving this car, it's always a good time!
70 cougar got to love em... I wish I had an eliminator but I'll settle for my H code base model... Thanks for sharing this beautiful ride..

Back in late 70’s a guy cruised in a black Cobra Cougar. I thought it was great, but a lot of the guys didn’t appreciate it

What a sweet car!! I am shocked the 8track still works! Lol.

Only a millionaire could afford the fuel bill if daily driven, lol
