After struggling with creative block for a couple of months, I'm beginning to get back to some new work. Hopefully more videos will follow.

I've finally finished editing this sketchbook video, 24 minutes might be a bit long but it's more of an attempt to show how you can just let go and enjoy the process of making marks without any restrictions. I have included a mix of real time, timelapse sequences and detailed close ups. Working with acrylic paint thinned with water and sketched over with charcoal. Filmed over a few days and edited from over an hour of video.
This video might help if you have been suffering from a creative block, it isn't always easy to begin the process of finding inspiration and using the freedom of a sketchbook can help.

Very inspirational! I think all too often we become caught up in the thought that we must produced finished work and this leads to stress. The simple process of making without a set goal helps to satisfy the need to be creative and alleviates stress, which in turn leads to new creative ideas. Thank you for the reminder!

Absolutely!! I really enjoyed making this demo and wanted it to seem as natural as possible, filming can sometimes get in the way of the process but I hope this helps to encourage others to just let go and enjoy the freedom that sketchbook work can bring to their own artwork.

Thanks for sharing your process. 🙏❤️. How do you ‘firm’ the charcoal so you can paint on it?

Always fix the charcoal with a suitable fixative. As an alternative a cheap hairspray also works.

Welcome back Dan, I don't think you realise exactly how much you are missed when you go walk-about. *Smile* This video is a wealth of inspiration. I've never used a sketch book but am going to our local art shop tomorrow and buy one. I'm always a bit nervous with a new way of working. Silly me, I know.
I tried to join your private channel (?) a couple of weeks ago, I was unable to make it work. I'm going to try again with Anne holding my hand. I've lost the link to the registration. I'll email you and you can send it to me. Thank you.

Hi Gordon, good to know you enjoyed this demo. I've neglected sketchbooks for a while but I realised that they are a great way to get ideas out quickly, try new things or just enjoy the process of making a mess. You can often pai t over pages so you build up layers. It does help to improve your technique and let yourself go. Sorry you are having trouble signing up as a member. I've put a link in the description below the video so this might help. I will send an email later.
