The actors in Jaws 2 were terrified of the mechanical shark because it would misfunction. It would come racing towards them and they were afraid it really would crash into them.
The moment the fin comes out of the water is pure horror, it does not need blood. It was so effective that it has etched in mind down to the present day. Whenever I look out into an empty space of water (lake or sea), it crosses my mind, what would be if a shark fin would now break the surface. Some movie scenes will echo in eternity, regardless of the viewer’s or the film’s age.

I’m going to approach this like MYTHBUSTERS … A great white can swim 25 mph for short durations, 35 mph in short bursts … a water ski boat typically goes 20-35 mph with a slalom skier. The side view suggests the boat speed was modest, say 25mph, occasionally slowing slightly as the driver steered a bit … The elapsed time from the moment the fin broke water, until the attack, was 60 seconds … The shark wasn’t far away, so at 25+ mph (with a 35 mph burst at the end), it could’ve caught up with the boat/skier at 22 to 25 mph … Under these parameters, this is WIN for the producers of JAWS 2 … but a loss of poor Terri, and the later, the boat driver 😉

The crappy mechanical shark model was the reason for the first jaws success. It had so many problems that it was not seen until the latter stages of the movie, allowing the audience to imagine a real shark during the earlier scenes, which made it more realistic, because your imagination never uses an inferior model. This is why many people will prefer a book over a movie based on the same book, because the imagination sets high standards, to which the movie usually falls short.
See why this was cut. Shark’s swimming with its nose out of the water, like a tribute to Tippett. It just doesn’t look right. If they’d been able to keep its nose fully submerged, that would’ve made A LOT of difference. Also, there needed to be blood in the water.
