    Well, before you buy a W115 you always have to check the whole body of the car for signs of rust or repaired corrosion. This affects the value of the car a lot more than the condition of the mechanics becuase those are rather cheap to repair anyway - but corrosion isn't.
    That's just the most important thing about W115's, but there's a lot more so I advice you to find a W115 club or someone who knows a lot about or has one of those cars near you so they can help you with finding a good one!

    Just bought a 1975 240d (w115.117) with a manual transmission. Great car and am working on replacing a couple rusted panels, trunk pan, and surface rust on belly pan. Also need to replace rubber seals around doors, trunk, engine and rubber bushings in steering and should be back on the road. Nice car you have there! Thanks for taking us for a ride!

    We had 1970 220D Auto. That 2.2 Liter diesel was bullet-proof. However, it was also anemic. Were the engines around 50Hp? The 12V glow plug system worked well so long as the temperature didn't fall below -5 C. Then, starting the engine required the electric coolant heater to be plugged in a couple of hours before starting. WARNING: Do not use this car as getaway car!
    I loved that car for its mechanical durability. Rust is the main enemy. Here in the US salt belt, all Benz of that era and even more recent rusted almost as if corrosion resistance wasn't a design criteria. From the floors to the fenders(headlight area), the W's seemed to dissolve if driven in the salt. We had the 220D until it had ~180k miles on the ODO. The only major repairs, aside from rust, were: 1) Drive shaft carrier bearing. 2) Rear axle shafts. 3) Vacuum pump.....not bad. Classy Ride. I'm envious of the condition this one is in!

    • @thomsge91
      @thomsge91  8 років тому

      +NHZXBoi Smith Thank you for your awesome comment! The 220D engine even has 60HP, but the acceleration is awful - 0-60 in 28 seconds! My glow plugs always work, even in very cold weather. Although, as you said, rust is the main enemy so I don't drive at all when there is any salt on the roads. I even avoid rain as much as possible.

    Im planning to buy the 220d as my first car since now i can only find plastic boxes on the market. Do you see any problem on using this car today as a daily driver? Can it keep up with 110/120 kmh cruising speeds on the highway? Great video, became subscriber.

    • @WarhammerftwXD
      @WarhammerftwXD 10 років тому

      I bought a 1969 MB230 as my first car and that worked fine even though that exact car was pretty shabby. I drove it every day to work in the Norwegian winter. Ofcourse there will be more trouble with an old car than there would be if you had a new one, but if your are motivated for the task it's gonna be fine.

    • @thomsge91
      @thomsge91  9 років тому

      You should have some mechanic skills and a car lift that you can use for repairs. 220D top speed is 135km/h and 110km/h is the maximum speed I drive on the highway because driving faster is very loud ;) It's a great daily driver because it only needs 8l of diesel on 100km. You should also have a dry garage for it because those cars tend to rust very quickly if exposed to rain and snow a lot.

    Hello. Very nice car you have. I am interested in buying one...is it practical for everyday use? I currently drive a 190d and its great...but I would like something more classic and W123 is also an option.
    So what can you tell me about the W115 Diesel? Is it economical? Practical on modern roads? Reliable?
    Thanks

    • @thomsge91
      @thomsge91  10 років тому +3

      Hello Damien,
      the old Mercedes Diesel engines are well known for their reliability and durability, they last for ages if maintained correctly. The 200D and 220D also don't need much fuel, somewhere in the area of 7-8l per 100 km. The 240D and 300D need more fuel, of course. It is a very practical car because of the compact size. It's rather long but only 1,77m wide, so for example parking is very easy. Plus, from the drivers seat you can see all 4 corners of the car, so you have an awesome overview. The 60hp of the 220D are enough to keep up with traffic and in my opinion, the top speed of 130 km/h is sufficient as well. The best thing about those cars: the technology is very simple so it is very reliable and also easy to repair (there's lots of things you can do by yourself without lots of mechanic skills) :)

    • @maltiveru
      @maltiveru 10 років тому

      Thank you for your reply. Yes, no electronics for sure :-) Even my 190 2.5D is very simple compared with modern cars. In my country the most common w115 are the 200d and 220d....I never saw a 300d.
      Well, the w115 looks better than a w123, the design is more clean. I am really tempted to buy a w115, but at the same time I will miss my 190d.
      Did the w115 come with extras? I think in europe A/C was not available right? What about parts, do mercedes still make parts for them?
      Thanks again.

    • @thomsge91
      @thomsge91  10 років тому +2

      Yeah, you could order it with a variety of extras back in the day. Features like power steering, pleather seats, head rests, a heated rear window, dark tinted windows and so on were optional. Also you could chose between the column shift, a normal stick shift and automatic transmission but they dropped the column shift in '73 I think. Seatbelts in the rear were also optional.
      Mine doesn't have any extras, not even a radio - the little antenna thing you might have noticed on the right fender is fake :P
      I don't know if the W115's were ever made with A/C for the European market, maybe in the later years. But a friend told me that you can buy used mercedes A/C systems and put them in the W115.
      By the way, if you're going to look for a W115 to buy, don't have too many perceptions and wishes about things like colour, extras etc. Otherwise you'll have a hard time finding a good one. The main thing is that the body is in a very good condition with not much rust. The technology is rather cheap and easy to repair and most of the extras can be upgraded, it is for example possible to install power steering in a car that was delivered without it. You could even change the engine
      Mercedes still has/makes original parts but they're mostly very expensive. But there is still a very good market of used parts and also new parts from other manufacturers.
      S

    Nice video; your car is peppy, not slow and the interior and condition is very good. However, please do not encourage people to use biodiesel in an attempt to circumvent the use of diesel fuel BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY CLOGS UP THE FUEL INJECTOR PUMP and since more than likely you won't fix it afterward, it will be the ruination of a perfectly good classic diesel. Finding a fuel injector is going to potentially be an odyssey and expensive at the least. I EARNESTLY doubt you would ever put in this car.
    So all you bums who think it cool or shiek use your head and cut it out.
