  • The two level crossings shown in the video are located on the Dunmore Quarry Siding, which is situated between Wollongong and Kiama on the South Coast Line. The siding is privately owned by Boral and is used to transport product from the quarry to a concrete processing plant in Sydney (St Peters). The siding isn't very busy these days and usually sees around one train per week.
The first crossing (with American looking crossbucks) is for the northbound exit ramp from the Princes Highway onto Tabbita Road. It is a one-way road and the crossing only has signals for that direction. It was installed around 2005/06 when the nearby overpass was constructed, prior to this the Princes Hwy crossed the siding at a level crossing slightly further to the east. Both signals have a single pair of Henkes & Harmon lights, with all Harmon wording removed from the logos. The lights are fitted with LED's which are arranged in a hexagonal pattern, they look very similar to WCH 1st generation LED's. The signal on the left (western side) has a Western Cullen Hayes mechanical bell.
The second crossing is for a local cycle/walking path and is located on the site of the original Princes Hwy crossing. It has the strange combination of being protected by crossbucks and "Give Way" signs normally used at passive road crossings, and also by Don't Walk lights and alarms which can usually be found at pedestrian crossings. This crossing was installed around 2009/10 and has Aldridge "Don't Walk" lights and what appear to be Banshee Excel sounders. Both crossings share the same relay case and are manually activated by shared pushbuttons, as the crossing has no train detection.
    Train information:
1st/2nd train: 1933 empty hoppers from Cooks River (St Peters) to Dunmore Quarry, with locomotives TT112 and TT118 (distributed power). The train can be seen arriving at the quarry in the afternoon and then departing again for Cooks River later that night once loading was completed (as train number 9134). Filmed on January 15, 2018.
3rd train: Just over a week later, the same train (number 1933) can be seen arriving at the quarry again to collect the next load for transport to Cooks River. Filmed on January 24, 2018.

I'm pretty sure that this line is now abandoned, went to the little creek bridge at the gate and it said "NO VEHICLES OR PEDESTRIANS PERMITTED ON BRIDGE"

20:05 Wow don’t think I’ve ever seen a gateless pedestrian crossing with crossbucks before! Usually they either have gates or it’s passive. Nice work on all the footage btw!

Thanks! It seems odd having a Give Way sign with the Don't Walk lights, it should really be a Stop On Red Signal sign.

Wow, American styled Crossbucks. I would NEVER imagine seeing one on our Australian Soil. I almost thought it was filmed over in the USA at first and thought, why is a PN loco doing over in the US? then saw the photo and realised it's still here in AUS. :)
    Good videoing.

Thanks! Don't know why they used those crossbucks but it sure makes for an interesting look, maybe it was some kind of trial.

These are not on US mainlines anymore, they went out of main service in the 70s in the US

@@McKHAust they look to be standard Australian crossbucks, but the holes for the bolts are drilled so that they line up more square than is normal for this strange country that we live in.

i can tell they are australian ones because they say "railway". American ones say "railroad".

This is a neat pair of level crossings! one with the more modern 90-degree crossbucks, and an odd pedestrian crossing with alarms facing up!

Thanks! It certainly is odd to have the alarms facing up, they would fill with water which can't be good for them.

The pedestrian crossing replaced a ramp crossing with teardrops at it, and nearby Dunmore Rd was also grade separated

Great video! I believe those are WCH 1st Generation LEDs there. The rears of the engines on the trains remind me of SD70ACe engines.

These are actually the old Canadian crossbucks since they also used the same exact designs as here in the US and also used the word RAILWAY. Here in the US, we use the word RAILROAD for our crossbucks.

Nice video! I'd hate to get stuck at that crossing. It was activated for like 6 minutes in the footage, Jesus. Did you get footage of the crossing's de-activating, out of interest?

    • @McKHAust
      @McKHAust  6 років тому +1

Thanks! The road crossing is only for access to the quarry so it's not very busy. I did get footage of the crossing de-activating for the first train, but the video would have been much longer so I left it out. The crossing needs to be manually de-activated after the train and it took a couple of minutes before somebody did that!

Shame that the old highway crossing is gone.

The old crossing had some nice equipment, but it was dangerous and very congested. You can see from the video how long it was blocked for every train, the traffic would often bank up for a kilometre in either direction. At least they installed some interesting new equipment to replace the old crossing!

So the first crossing is gone?

The original crossing here was replaced by the overpass about 10 years ago.
