I believe this is the best recording of Alphorn playing I've come across! I have heard alphorns in person. Warning, do not stand less than 10 ft from the front of them because your hearing may be damaged!!! I'm not kidding!

This is an amazing instrument. I love it! The Alphorn superficially reminds me of a didgeridoo, which uses the same acoustic principles: interplay between the player's lips and the mouthpiece sets the pipe up for standing waves. The trumpet uses the same physics. I would love to see a modal synthesis simulation of the Alphorn. Just throw it into Ableton and play it using the old MIDI-keyboard.

how difficult is this instrument compared to a French Horn
Probably quite similar to playing a natural horn. You'd need fairly flexible lips, but the music also sounds alot easier than what's written for horn
