I’m an alcoholic but I don’t want to quit even though I know I should. It’s ruining my physical health and the relationships to my family and friends. But I love drinking and being drunk so much that I don’t think I can quit. I don’t know what to do.

Good for Bill. I quit about 2 years ago. I started feeling like total garbage the next day. Waking up exhausted, headache, depressed, and miserable. The misery outweighed the fun as I got older. I also used to think I was charming and funny when I was drunk, but I realized I was mostly obnoxious.

11 years sober now. What sobered me was a CAR HITTING ME GOING 50MPH WHILE CROSSING THE STREET! I've o.d. on alcohol b4 (0.525% I got the report) been to rehab(didnt work) been to jail hundreds of time, was homeless,AA NA didnt work have had seizures from trying to quit or running out, and hit my stepfather.(battery)
After I got hot by the car,I still was drinking , my fiance was about to leave me, the night b4 she left me, it was 3am in the morning, I was depressed bcs she was leaving, I went to take me meds and drink it down with a natural ice. Next thing you know I couldnt stop projectile vomiting. I had to make a choice, idk if it was my body saying "NO!" after 10 years, my fiance leaving me, taking my meds and drinking at the same but I just couldn't stop.
I woke up my fiance and told her to pour it all out. She did in minutes.
I made a choice, I took my meds so I wasn't in pain(my broken leg was throbbing) and chose my fiance over booze.
We've been together for 11 years. I started drinking at 13, stopped at 22.
I DON'T MISS IT! I'll stick with kratom, and weed once in awhile!

The only thing I’ve got to look forward to is a day off work when I can sit down, play a few games and have too many beers. It’s literally boredom. However in December of 2018, I just decided that drinking even seldomly was pointless. So I just decided not to do it. My life story is really, really fuckin bad. I was a serious alcoholic starting in my teens when I taught myself how to make it in my closet. That was a dark, 15-year story and it's pretty surprising that I'm even alive. Now I'm off of it 18 months & today is my 34th birthday, stuff only started improving when I forced myself to quit. It's treated like a mystery why it's such a destructive problem with so many people, but the puzzle makes perfect sense when you watch explanations from experts how alcohol interacts with pleasure centers in our brains. And how your body actually tries to deal with it, wow. Your liver literally converts it into toxic poison in an attempt to flush it all out. You usually start out young & gullible, then you just start justifying it and then you're locked in.

Bill Burr said it though once you start drinking on a regular basis at home there's a problem. Whether you want to admit it or not. Booze needs to be kept recreational when you go out with your friends or when family Reunion, any kind of reunion really haha. But when you're drinking hard liquor at home every night it's an issue. I mean you can be a functioning alcoholic and a non-functioning but alcoholic is an alcoholic

Nah I drink alone. You're not going to shame me into surrounding myself with drunk loudmouths and call it recreation. I'd prefer to hang out with my friends when we're all sober. It's more real that way in my opinion and there's less drama and people are more aware.
I also don't drink if I had a bad day or I'm under the weather, I know better than to use alcohol as an emotional crutch and regularly practice cold turkey for The Church and Sober September.

@@cfroi08 I hear you. But it's not a matter of "not knowing better" for many people. There are people who feel compelled to use it as an emotional crutch and do just that, due to different environmental/biological factors, but still know that what they are doing is killing them and that they should stop it. If every addict simply needed to "learn" and "know" better than to indulge in their addiction, addiction would not be a thing. We're talking about two distinct parts of the brain at odds with each other.
Drinking at home alone does not necessarily mean you have a problem, sure. What I think this person should have said is that you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who has an alcohol problem that doesn't regularly drink alone at home.

You have to want it. I’m 27 about to be 28 on October 9th and gave up alcohol April 27th of this year. It’s a constant battle, you have your days where you don’t even think about it and then you have your days where you could really go for 18 PBRs. It is very nice to just stop drinking, the challenge is committing to it. The only reason I stopped was because I crashed my car drinking and driving, maybe you’re a lot smarter than I am when on the sauce but it scared me and put me in a really really dark place. Luckily nobody was hurt, but I don’t wish anyone to experience what I experienced. I hope this rabble makes sense but if you want it, you can have it.

The only thing that made me cut down on my drinking was acute liver inflammation, but when I'd binge drink, I'd go hard, and I'd go often. Like, half the week I was drunk, easily drinking 1+ liters of bourbon in a 24-hour window, then doing it again and again, usually three days straight, that couldn't have been Bill Burr. As nasty as it was, getting in trouble with police, regretting shit I said, waking up in my own piss, opening up my fridge to a pile of junk food I don't remember buying, and so on, I didn't get into fights BUT the _only_ thing that stopped that self-destructive drinking was my liver literally HURTING after one of my binges. I didn't go to the doctor, because I knew what it was. It just went away after a few weeks of remaining sober, and I took up an NAC supplement. I dunno, it's hard. I mean, I still drink, but I don't go wild like before. The crazy thing is, I never was a boozer as a young adult, just in my mid-20's I got into it when life began to suck, and you know, marijuana isn't legal where I live. It's a dangerous, horrible drug, but it's legal, so. 🙄

Yes you can drink yourself into dependency, alcoholism is not a scientific or evidence based condition. Alcoholism is a self diagnoses one makes depending on their personal qualifications. It's all about the brain chemicals. I can say for myself as one who gave up the extracurricular brain chemicals, my anxiety decreased by 80%, but it is hard work and there are times as Burr says you really miss it. BUT I don't miss the morning after horror show that my life was becoming in the last year of my 'partying'.

I'm glad I kinda hate being drunk. I get sick from it really easily and get so dizzy so I can't enjoy it. So I just will have a single drink. The worst I got was drinking one beer a day, but it was making my burps smell so bad like a nasty fart. My wife pointed it out, so I switched to 2-3 beers a week, and now I don't have the stinky burps. It also helps that I workout 3 days a week and I don't want to drink on those days.

Funny that he said that once you start drinking at home it’s a problem.
In England yeah you’ll have your first ‘proper’ drink in a pub (usually around 16yrs old, even though the legal age is 18), but a lot of men drink at home, and often alone or just with the wife. It’s common to have several cans of beer at home after work, maybe 3-4 nights a week, then starting a little earlier at weekends (3pm maybe).
