Did a few years ago first game of the year and got stomped.
Decided to come watch this after hearing the news that Tennessee backed out of going to Provo in 2023. This win is all the more satisfying, plus easy money for BYU.

I remember this game lol. I was at a ballroom retreat, and I couldn't watch it because we were doing team building exercises and whatever. I checked the score all throughout the retreat, but there was bad reception and I quit checking after 3rd quarter due to the stress and sadness. I had resigned myself to another BYU loss. When my mom came by, I found out BYU had put the game into overtime and on the way home we listened to the win. Shocked does not begin to describe my emotions.

As part of the deal for this game, Tennesee was supposed to play BYU in Provo next year. However, Tennesee is backing out to play Virginia instead. Good move financially, plus BYU would probably put on a show given it's in Provo.
Gotta love non conference play among equal teams.

So Tennessee paid a $2,000,000 buyout to not play at Byu in 2023 this shows Tennessee is afraid of getting beat by BYU at Provo.

I refereed high school football for 14 years, and had a chance I turned down to move into college football. I wanted to have the weekends for my family, not the Western Athletic Conference (about 30 years ago now). The end of the game reminded me of one of my biggest pet peeves. Pay attention fans - you may learn something, too:
On BYU's overtime touchdown that was reviewed, one of the announcers made the comment, "The whistle was never blown, so it was obviously a touchdown." or something to that effect, meaning, the whistle obviously ends the play. Uh, no.
This is one of the dumbest comments you can make because in football, unlike every other sport, the whistle has nothing to do with a play being over. It's blown as a courtesy to the players, so they know a rule was met that resulted in a dead ball situation. There really aren't that many situations that kill the ball. They are, to the best of my memory:
1 - any scoring play.
2 - any incomplete pass
3 - when any player controlling the ball leaves the playing field
4 - a player in control of the ball (by rule, a runner) is downed when any part of the body between the knees and elbows touch the ground. That of course, includes the knees and elbows
5 - any kick that is:
A - missed, in the case of an extra point or field goal. Since the ball is dead at the end of every scoring kick, the referee (white hat) almost always blows the whistle as soon as the ball is kicked. That helps minimize injuries because smart players know to stop playing when they hear the whistle. Good coaches have taught them that since they were little.
B - rolls to a stop or is touched by the kicking team -- I think there's an exception but can't remember what it is... it came after I retired.
C - leaves the playing field, including crossing the goal line unless a live ball during a kickoff after a scoring play
D - caught and downed by an offensive player
E - is muffed on a punt and then recovered by the defense
I may have missed something. I retired 24 years ago. I really miss the players. It was very gratifying when I'd walk onto a field and players from one or both teams would recognize me and tell me they knew I'd give them a good game. I taught them at the coin toss that we'd call the game fairly. We could not call it evenly without the teams being evenly matched. Many people never learn the difference between fair and even. You can never have both without evenly matched teams. The mistakes the players make control that, however, and an honest team of officials can only make the calls each team earns. One lesson good officials need to learn, however, is they are not detectives. They should teach players, unless safety is concerned, or the game play is affected.

I think its possible they go 2-10 maybe even 1-11. they probably will get the win against Chattanooga but uab isn't guaranteed after the first two weeks. Vanderbilt is the only sec game I see them possibly winning and maybe not even that one. the stretch against Florida, Georgia, Mississippi state, and Alabama will crush their spirits
