I love almost every song of this video but the Kinks "You really got me" and "All day and all of the night" are definitley my favorites! Such hard rocking songs for 1964!
So many songs I know and love, and most of the ones in this video are familiar to me with just a small number that I can't say I've necessarily heard in full at one time or another. Roy Orbison's Pretty Woman was the song at number 1 when I was born, and the Olympics were taking place in Tokyo then - the first time around. Only eight-and-a-bit months until they're on again in Paris for the first time since 1924; that's coming round fast.
I'm not even much of a fan of the band but, after so many Beatles wannabes, each time they showed up in the chart The Kinks felt like a breath of fresh air. It's also fascinating to witness the pace of change in the music scene, along with the fashion trends, from Jan to Dec 1964.
Great to find a compilation of 1960s hits, that's British. I was three in 1964, and heard all these tracks on Pick Of The Pops on the BBC Light Program, on my late parents' Bush Valve Radio. 😎🎶❤
These songs will be 60 shortly and many of these are classics and known today. The Rolling Stones were becoming a force and the Beatles were like Gods! Millie sadly had a tragic story 20 years after that song. She became homeless in the mid 80s and was living in a shelter with her daughter. Luckily her old age up until death was happy. That song is a staple today. Isn't 'The Crying Game' about a transvestite? Quite progressive for 1964 if so! Matt Monro's entry 'Walk Away' was a cover of the Austrian entry at that years Eurovision. Of course you can't beat Cilla Black! Amazed how many songs I know on here! Thank you for an excellent flashback to a fab era of music 👍 So many good songs. On a side note, amazing how both the Rolling Stones and The Beatles have had a number one album and single (in the latter case) in 2023!!
The Liverpool artists emerged from nowhere and had taken over the charts in '63 and really dominated again in '64, but after this year, aside from The Beatles, their run dried up pretty quickly. Pretty amazing phenomenon when you think about it.
So much diversity this year brought! After so many years of the same Elvis and twist-like music, the new sounding bands were just emerging out of nowhere. People talk about The Beatles when they speak of that time but the true revolutionaries were The Animals and The Kinks. They almost feel out of place here so early in 1964!

Absolutely fantastic.
What a great year.I was 14 and loved pop music
I was 5 in 1964 and remember most of these. My favourite is 'Someone Someone' by Brian Poole and the Tremeloes.
What a great year for music.

1964 is the year this is where my Mum Gaynor was born.

In that year there was no official UK list, the data was probably taken from magazines such as NME, the official list began operating in August 1969
It's on Official Charts, tell them they're wrong
I find it surprising Downtown didn't make it to #1 in the UK yet did here in the US

A few classics but mainly forgettable trash.
