    I got the "Quick Start 7" Board in 1997 when we bought a Scope with that " Insta VU" stuff that time.
    Unfortunally I got no manual with it. But every time I get a new Scope , I go for a quick " Tek QS7 Check"😉. The "QS 7" looks a bit different , but seems to have similar tests like " OC1 /NRZ " or " Staircase with glitches" . In those days , we got "tons " of Tek scopes , HP Spectrum Analysers , Anritzu and Rhode & Schwartz RF - Sources and meters from Gossen-Metrawatt and Fluke in the lab....All of them: "Rock- Solid" Material.

    When I was in the industry, either I got demo boards to keep, or if they were scarce - on loan instead. Can't say for certain about Tek, but every other vendor gave away or loaned.
    If we had to buy, then I had to generate a req, get it approved, send it to purchasing, etc. etc, etc., meaning months and months of waiting. Ask for a demo or loan and I'd have it in no time. Vendors want you to get it you hands pronto (so some other vender doesn't sneak in and takes away business).

    When I was the R&D tech at SONY in Boulder lots of company's would not only send for free anything I wanted to take a look at, but some of them wanted to send it with a pretty young lady to explain the product to me over dinner. I always declined the dinners, and told them to just have the parts or modules or whatever dropped off with the receptionist at the front desk. When you reach the big leagues, things can get positively strange. I won't even mention HP's marketing department back in the '70's.

    I think the small metal can part is not a mixer but a VCO from Mini-Circuits.

    I found the QuickStart8 manual on the tek site and it says 2000. I have an equivalent board from Rigol but I don't know whether it does as much as this one - the minicircuits mixer modulated RF and QAM looks like a nice addition. I have a HP spectrum analyser that has a QAM decode option.
    [edit] the Rigol board does many analog things and also has CAN, UART, RS232, 12C etc and many, many digital outputs on headers from the central FPGA.

    I look forward to seeing the QUAM constellations in Lissajous display mode of the I and Q signals on your many various Oscilloscopes.

      In many cases the x and y Amplifier had not the same Bandwith to deal with it. But in the mid-nineties there was a Constellation Analyser from HP ( sorry , hve forgotten the Number) , witch we used in Germany for repair of Microwave communication OC3/OC12 stuff ( 4 PSK, 16QAM ,64QAM Systems). Great Tool !

    DPO vs DSO oscilloscope? I’ve been watching a DPO scope on EBay because I’m trying to step up from my handheld Owon to something more bench worthy. I’ve read a bunch on the two types but I think I’m further away from understanding it. DSO pertains to storage while DPO has to do with sampling functionality allowing for a signal to measure“frequency of occurrence “. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

      In recent times, the line has blurred, but years ago, DPO scopes tended to be better able to trigger on and show glitch anomalies, since they could emulate the analog concept of intensity. Early digital scopes could only display a single line for the most part. Look at this video at 9:39 when he zooms in on the [relatively] fast edge pulse---you see the main trace line where _most_ of the signal is, but you also see a fainter area around that main trace, showing that the signal isn't perfect or fully consistent, and a certain percentage of the time the voltage levels vary. Early DSOs couldn't do that, and on that same signal you would only see the main trace. DPOs give that intensity factor (along with fast update rate to make it useful). TLDR; a DPO is a DSO which has a fast update rate and intensity capability like an analog scope.

      as Ruel states, most high end DSOs also have DPO functionality. My scope does; it can also do colorized intensity traces.

    MOUSE BITES!!! what sized mice do you have? That weird one at 4:35 looks like Jaws jumping out of the water. Would have loved to have one when trying to teach people how to use a 'scope.

    Given away. Own something like this for free (minus the rf and data). Mines is a power supply board to measure. Model # 878-0544-00. Neat little thing that is all for testing although I could “ruin” it and make if useful by “removing” the resistor load. Powered by a 12VAC wall brick transformer btw. Keysight had one too as well as a board more like yours but they are rare to come by. I think b/c their oscilloscope demo a signal virtually (own a MSOX3104A with the EDU opt). Another board, the U1880A, was already hard enough as it is to find. This one you had to buy for deskew but you could make your own.

    I just checked eBay and the only one listed is $300. There is a different model, possibly newer listed for $400. That is too pricey for just fooling around with it.

    that 2 ns edge is the fastest your scope can show right? Equals 500 MHz. So it could be much faster than that, you can't know without a faster scope.

    • @IMSAIGuy
      @IMSAIGuy  Рік тому

      Yes, this fast edge is used to calculate the bandwidth of an oscilloscope. Making some assumptions my scope calculates to about 485 MHz
