This video was created for my 2021 Introduction To Philosophy class at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. In it, I discuss some of the wide range of different methodological and movement approaches adopted within the field of philosophy in the present. In particular, I aim to move us past a narrow and parochial conception of contemporary philosophy that reduces it to an analytic-continental divide, by highlighting other robust approaches, such as history of philosophy, classical American philosophy, philosophy as a way of life, and comparative philosophy, among others

I'm a student of continental philosophy from the Czech Republic (love your channel!). The professors in my faculty work exclusively on German Idealism, Phenomenology, and Philosophical Anthropology. Heidegger is by far the most influential philosopher here. That probably has something to do with the phenomenological tradition being upheld here by students of Jan Patočka, our perhaps most famous philosopher of the 20th century who was a phenomenologist and studied with Heidegger and Husserl. It's interesting to see the difference when comparing my professors with those of another faculty. There they work mostly on analytical philosophy. I feel like the analytical style is slowly getting more prevalent here because it tends to be more respected in academic circles, mainly for its clarity. But strictly analytical readings of authors like Nietzsche, for example, can be misleading - they tend to paint him as a scientistic naturalist and miss the more "esoteric" nuances in his thought.

I’ve encountered Patocka in my grad studies, at a school where phenomenology was pretty big. You’re right - broadly analytic approaches are becoming more popular, but for study of historical figures who weren’t analytics, it’s not a particularly good approach

Hey Dr. Sadler. Please excuse me if this question has been answered elsewhere in your works. I am wondering about strategies for writing about philosophy. I am a self study student, and I'd like to develop my writing skills through writing essays on philosophy. I am by no means asking how to write a journal article, but rather some general advice for getting started on writing and the process as a whole. I'd like to write, but I feel even finding a topic can be hard as a beginner. Thank you Dr. Sadler, as always.

Start with why you are writing it in the first place.
Is it for you? Are you trying to get published? Flushing out ideas? Have a “Pearl of wisdom” as they say to share with the world? Etc. Only thing that matters is what you are trying to get at. Even if it’s just stream of consciousness writing you can rewrite it and think about it, scrap it, etc. start again…just my unasked for 2 cent opinion…
