Did not work, everything went as planned until I hit minus front and it deletes all dots but one of them. I'm obviously doing something wrong but can't figure out what it is for the life of me. Please help anyone!!!
This a late reply, but for anyone with the same issue, this happened to me too. I solved it a different way: Create another rectangle 480x520px. Fill with color. Put this rectangle behind the dots. Expand dots, then select both and press minus front.

Awesome! I really was wanting to do a postage stamp project in Illustrator for a long time. I think it should work out for me; your instructions seem very clear to me...but in understanding Illustrator I'm going to want to do some research on Flatten Transparency as I know next to nothing about it.
