Why You Need To Carry 2 2x4s In Your Hunting Truck
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 сер 2019
- This video talks about why every hunter needs to have two 2x4s the length of their truck bed with them during the hunting season. These two 2x4s will not only make life easier and save your back, but they can also keep things quiet. They also make one of the absolute best methods to get your truck out if you get stuck in the mud, snow, sand, etc.

THANK YOU ANOTHER PRACTICAL VIDEO.. I USE 2X6 DOUG FIR TIMBERS W/ MINIMAL KNOTS GIVES YA ABOUT A 1 FOOT WIDETH ..
Glad you enjoyed it!
I tell you something else I carry in my truck when I go into the woods. I carry several smaller pieces of 4x4,2x4 and a piece of 6x6 all about 1-2’ long. All scrap pieces. I use them for cribbing if I get stuck or if I need to drop a trailer, etc. I just hide them under my toolbox out if the way. I also carry a single plastic parts store ramp that I can drive on to raise my truck up on to work under if needed and a single jack stand. Never know when you may need that. Also it can serve as a traction board in a pinch.
Yep great tips and suggestions. I carry a dedicated home made jack base in my gladiator as well as 2 peices of 24 inch 2x4s
I like the wheel cleat idea. For similar situations I keep tire chains in my full size 2wd van. Last week I was up hunting and made a very poor choice in roads and when I finally got to a spot to turn around immediately got stuck in the mud and slick moss/grass plus the road had been going down hill so I was now fighting gravity. I aired down, and broke out my traction boards but ultimately had to chain up and I was able to drive out. Pays off to be prepared 👍
Smart thinking and great job using the tools you had
I may go a little overboard but after two hernia surgeries, I carry two 2x12s and a sled in my truck. I just walk the deer right up with no lifting involved.
Perfect. Work smart not hard
Never seen the wheel cleat idea. That’s great!
Glad you enjoyed it
I hunt my 72 acre wooded back yard, & I don't own a pick up truck. I tilt the cargo box of my Kawasaki Mule down. I attached a compact cable come-along to the rear roll bar. I clip the other end of the come-along to a shortened rope on the front of the sled, and then I winch it into the tilted cargo box. Once it's in the box, I just need to flip the cargo box back up & fasten it back down. The sled is held in the cargo box by the come-along whether I flip the rear gate up or not. It beats lifting a deer into the cargo, especially when you are alone.
Sounds like a great system for where you hunt
Awesome, Reminds me of my dad's old tractor, we done something simmerler, use pipe chained to each rear wheels, and had to move the pipe a few times, but it worked.
Yep same concept. Helps get you out of the holes.
Only subbed a week or two ago. Been plowing thru your emporium of enlightening, no bunkum past vids. Nothing but respect for you man. Be safe. Cheers

@@fleegull greatly appreciated! Any questions on any of it just ask!
Yep,I always have a couple 2x4’s in my truck plus a couple of 6x6x3’ wood blocks.
The 6x6 is a great idea too
I love when people problem solve without spending a lot of money.
Agree 100
with those 2x4 you could trade it in for another truck.
That's hilarious
Thanks to Biden
If you can’t Dodge it Ram it.
I don't have the credit score for lumber
Woulda never got rid of the ranger lol
I use a 4-wheeler ramp! And the jet sled been doing that for 30 yrs! People saying they seen 2x4s throu the cab an into a persons pelvis?? That has to be a pretty freak accident The frame on truck would have to be crushed to back of cab! This isn’t a semi flat bed that doesn’t have a headache rack an hauling pipe or something!
Good trick. Those Diesels have a hard time in snow. I take chains when the weather goes bad for my Ford150's. The only worry was snow too deep and the wrong temperature. You have to twist and turn to keep it from jacking you up off the gripping surface. That may require your to find more clearance. If the snow is powder I have seen it flow a wake like a boat in the water. Once packed or packes and frozen, you are looking for trouble. Back when I had older trucks 4X4, I could put chains on the front and the truck was unstoppable. Design tollerances changed forcing chains to the back like further back in my life. It was more tenuous but still worked but not as well when retrieving other vehicles from the over the hill in snow. I have buried a post in the ground in front of a hole that swallowed a Dodge Buckboard one time. It had a winch to pull it out hooked to the post. That Dodge was rough but tough.
Yep all the extra weight on the front t of a diesel is a help in some cases and a hindrance in others.
Always thinking! Hope all is going well for you in Dixie.
Loving it down here. Hope life is good up there for you!
The 2 by 4s are a great idea !

Awesome tips . Thanks
Pretty handy tips. Thanks

This is good to know thanks .
Good tip! Im gonna do this!
Works great and the security of self recovery is great.
Good video on a simple overlooked topic. Getting stuck sucks!
Especially when you are miles away from nowhere all alone. These 2x4s are a lifesaver!!!!
Thats right, and here in the NC mountains I rarely have phone service. So to get help who knows how many miles I’d have to walk before my phone worked or someone picked me up. I’m mid forties now and though not old 6-8 miles in the mountains up and down would be rough. Good hunting this year…ours starts this Saturday sept 7
@@Tbowie13 yeah same boat here but without the mtns. Where I hunt there is very limited cell service and could be a 20 mile walk to get help, especially in the late season when nobody is out there. Always have multiple options of self recovery and a full tool kit with me. Good luck out there, hunt hard, be safe and have fun.
@@tradbowpodcast you as well bud! I also got that 66i garmin this year with gps sos button and satellite texting just incase. Ya never know and I'm not a youngster anymore. Take care.
@@Tbowie13 good call on the communicator! Never can be too careful. I used to use a spot locator that would send messages when I would do remote pack in bear hunts in Canada. Only way my wife would let me go. Good thing to have as even a twisted ankle can be life threatening in the right situations
Good idea!

Yep the tire is the easy way for me too.
Good idea, nice truck!

Excellent topic sir. I have never owned one of the sleds, but I have always had a few pieces of wood in my truck. Love the ramp idea, I will try that this year, looks like it would make life so much easier. I also love the getting unstuck Idea, the deadmans hook up and cutting them down for the tires is brilliant. Thanks again for sharing and have a blessed week my friend.

Thanks dale! Amazing what you can do with a 2x4 to get unstuck! I never have to call a buddy to come get me anymore!
Great tips!!
Thank you
I got a cheap Harbor Freight winch in the bed of my truck to winch my quad into the bed with ramps
Those harbor freight winches work great!
Until they quit working
What can I say other than, "Brilliant!"
Glad you enjoyed it
Yep recall that the slam and jam technique
I have a electric winch and a wooden ramp it works great
That sounds like a simple and slick system
Oh MY GOD, FROM NOW ON I MIGHT NEED 2-2x4 IN MY TRUCK JUST IN CASE I GOT A BIG BUCK, THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEO
Not sure if this is real or sarcastic. But either way, I'm gonna say thanks!
Kick-ass video, thanks!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
@David Erickson hahaha. Yep prices are insane! I keep worrying someone is gonna steal my 2x4s out of the back of the truck.
Awesome, subscribed forsure!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the vids
Looks like you got those falken wildpeaks on that rig. If you do 👍 They’re a great tire.
Yep have had them on 8 trucks and even have them on my new cherokee trail hawk now as well. Best tires I have ever used.
I've watched a bunch of, if not all of your videos... I have come to the conclusion, you carry a LOT of stuff!!!
And would not trade any of it!
You can never have too much stuff in your vehicle!
Better to have it and not need it than the alternative.
I mounted a boat hand crank to a 2X8 that fits against the back of my cab. Cranks em right up.
Brilliant idea
Better idea. I use my folding dirt bike ramp that will not move when pulling a deer into the the bed. It's illegal to drive on power lines in my state. I have dif lock on all four.
1/2 sheet (lengthwise) 3/4 plywood
I keep a block and tackle (old fence stretcher) in my truck with the 2x4 ramp.
Perfect set up
I just got a 2022 LoneStar looks just like yours just a blue color. I like that shovel on the back of your bed truck. Tell me about that and how you have it snugged in there please
Mounted with some anazon rubber shovel clamps screwed into the bedliner
We do the same thing with a game cart, works like a champ when you have a 300+ monster on the ground
So you can get your buck up in there! I got a Bronco w/6" lift and was workin harder vs smarter before I figured that out lmao...😊
especially as a short guy. No more of that standing on the tailgate fighting with everything I have to pull a deer up there!

Thank You, they dont make it easy but its worth it. 😉
Some good yankee ingenuity Jason! Love the truck too - you deserve it! Those are some nice looking tires too!!
Thank you!
Love your truck but I am not a fan of the slick plastic bed liners for the reasons you point out . Very noisy and very slick . I guess I just do not like strapping down everything I put in the bed . Great information if you do have one though !!
Agree 100. My tacoma and my gladiator that I have now I'm just using rubber bed mats and much happier.
Some great ideas, thanks! I keep a piece of 4x4 in my truck bed box to put my jack on to give it a solid base and give it some additional height when I'm changing a tire on my F150, especially in a situation not on a level paved surface.
Great idea about using them as a jack base!
The toy jacks they send with trucks anymore really are silly, they barely let the tire clear the ground and I have yet to see a practical way to be able to use a hi-lift. Keep up the good work!
@@bowman321123 agree! Need to test the one for the diesel to see how well it works. If not need to find a spot for a bottle jack.
Sir, my experience as a disabled outdoorsman is...
1. Keep the 2x4's in your truck as they work great for using as a pivot when loading heavy stuff or arguing with a trailer you want to hook up or unhook from your truck. BTDT.
2. If there are trees around you can also use young trees like you suggest for the 2x4's. BTDT.
3. Carry at least one spare rim, but it does not have to match your truck or tires. You can use it as a removable 4 season fire pit (the BLM & USFS don't like using rocks on dirt anymore) and you can use it like you did the 2x4's to either get yourself unstuck (particularly when high centered) or as an impromptu jack for a flat tire. BTDT both. And as I have seen done but never had to do, you can in some circumstances use it and either rope/cable/chain to improvise a winch (provided it matches your lug nut pattern).
4. You said carry a shovel. I disagree. Ideally, carry a #2 prospectors shovel like what you have in your truck, then a long handled #2 shovel AND a 4 tine garden fork. A what!?!? You heard me, a 4 tine garden fork. When you're stuck somewhere and nothing to grab on to like trees or boulders because of the packed soil & rock mix (particularly when you near a creek or river), the garden fork can act like an anchor for your winch/come along and it makes digging up buried rock immensely easier, in case you need rock to fill in a hole or rut so you can drive out. BTDT.
Man, so many of those are "BTDT", I earned the nickname "Quagmire" (before that sick perv from Family Guy ever got on TV)! (I seemed to get stuck more often on a Sunday than any other time, and I was told of Luke 14:5, so it seemed fitting!)
The key here is unless you're a super brain like McGyver or you have a few extra tools to even the odds.
Great write up! And live the tips!
Beautiful. This will save my ass someday
Sure has save mine
Strap works good and doesn't take up room
My not add a cargo cart to the back bottom of the truck. Eliminates need to lift deer more than two feet? Also Need to add 2x4 to front of sled and run rope though the wood/Plastic front & rope will break if pulling a two hundred pound deer going up hill ,
Should watch my jet sled videos. It shows you how to chance the rope and make the sled better. You will enjoy them.
Where did you purchase shovel and mount at please and thank you enjoy your videos.
Amazon. Will have a video out next week with all the extras I added to the truck along with links to all that stuff.
Don’t forget the saw for cutting boards down
Yep have to have a hand saw in the truck always
lol I legit thought this guy was green screening with a picture of the truck in the background... then he opened the tailgate lol.
Lol. I'm a short guy with a big truck
I'm short too but have a tonneau so the tire step doesn't work
I actually carry a 24 inch by 8 foot piece of 2/4 inch plywood for the purpose of a ramp.
Perfect
Nice--
Thanks
@@tradbowpodcast I have been hunting over 50 years now. At 66 I always have the Sled and the Cart depending on the terrain. I hunt my own 40 acres most of the time. Can't you have Detroit Lockers installed on you truck? I had a truck with real 4 wheel drive and it was a beast.
I could but not on this one as I got a smoking deal on a 6 yr 125k mile warranty. So no changing anything that would void it. Otherwise I would as soon as it was out of warranty.
I used 2 2x6s..had a winch in the bed by the cab.

@@tradbowpodcast thanks something about sitting in a tree stand on fall mornings like you find a level of peace you didnt know was there good luck to you this fall and have a safe hunting season
@@flushot6513 agree! You have a great season as well
@@andreweddy86 i hope i can explain it right i took 1-2x4 at lenght of width of truck so it would fit fairly snug pushed down in those groves in bed liner lag screwed turn buckles at each end which had caribeners so then i could clip it onto the bed tie downs i also used old bed frame rails to help beef up the 2x4 and then took 4 2x4 cut them not much longer than the height of that long one screwed em togehter to make 4x4 repeat that step so you have two then one lay flat screw those so they are standing up and slide that under your long board drill couple holes for winch couple bolts now 💪 then those turnbuckles come into play you can tighten those down to help kep it from rolling forward under pressure

Very good idea. Just a little tongue in cheek humor you obviously don't live in Illinois, not doing that with our Illinois deer. Happy hunting.
Your Illinois deer are no bigger that the deer I kill in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan etc. Works perfect for all deer.
