Pies over cakes is about economics. Fruit was often canned and some pies don't even require a crust, My grandmother had fruit trees like apple, cherry, and pear. Her root cellar had jars of fruit and spiced peaches. Berries could be picked. A box of raisins made a great "funeral" pie because it was cheap and didn't need refrigeration. Perfect funeral sweet. It was sticky and didn't run, so you could hold a piece in your hand. No need for plate and was often called a "fist" pie. These state desserts also reflect the immigrants that settled the area and what was cheap and available. My great grandmother had 14 children (3 sets of twins) and two or 3 pies went a lot further than an expensive cake. I enjoyed your vlog. Thanks.

When Krispy Kreme entered the Oregon market about 10 or so years ago, there were people lined up around the block waiting to try them. The Portland Police had to have a special traffic control unit to keep the cars moving also. There are only 2 or 3 Krispy Kreme outlets in the state that I'm aware of. Original Glaze right out of the oven is my favorite.

      I'm with you.
My family makes fun of me because unlike them, I don't trip over my own feet trying to get to Krispy Kreme to sit in the drive-thru for 30 minutes, and get doughnuts at twice the price, and half the taste compared to the "mom and pop" bakery four blocks away.
To each his own, but I tried them three times, once in the 1990s when someone bought some for me, once at a friend's house and five years ago, because I was hungry and that's all she had that didn't need cooking, and the summer of 2022, because my favorite place was out of lemon-filled. They were disappointing.
Dunkin Donuts opened here a few months ago, and I don't know if I'll like them, but may stop by to see.

I’m from New Jersey. Cannoli is more NJ’s favorite dessert. Blueberry Pie is our state dessert as Hammonton, NJ is known as the blueberry capital of the world (sorry Maine). Salt Water Taffy, while created in NJ and a famous NJ candy, it’s not dessert. The machine you see in the clip is a taffy puller. It used in a lot of candy manufacturing and is used to add air and mix colors or flavors in the product. The most iconic candy of New Jersey are M&M’s. The original plant and still headquarters for the M&M Mars Company is in Hackensack, NJ.

Key limes are different than standard limes, having a special flavor due to the acid content. Key limes, also known as Mexican limes or West Indian limes, are rounder and much smaller than regular limes. They are named after the Florida Keys, where they were first cultivated in the 19th century. Key Lime pie is delicious. We usually eat it for spring or summer as it is very refreshing.
Pie is indeed my favorite dessert preferring it to cake. We make pies often and by season. For fall examples are apple and pumpkin, summer for peaches, strawberries other fruits that grow, pecan is often at Christmas, banana cream or coconut cream we make any time of the year. This last Saturday we made pie as our dessert. A pie we have never done before with both lemon and lime juice in it topped with fresh cream which is similar to Key Lime Pie. It is called an Atlantic Beach Pie. - delicious

I don't know why Utah got stuck with Jello, it's really not that popular here. According to the last poll I saw on the subject, we're not even the state that eats the most of it. I agree with the other Utahn, we definitely eat more ice cream. It's not unusual at all for Utahns to go out for ice cream in the dead of winter. If you'd like to hear about a more unusual dessert, how about a banana boat? Take a banana, split it down the middle the long way, fill it with chocolate chips and marshmallows, wrap it in aluminum foil, and stick it in a fire or on a grill until it's all gooey. It's usually eaten while camping.

Apple dumplings are my favorite. I come from a small town in Northern California whose major industry used to be apples, Gravensteins in particular. Even though that's not how the town makes its money anymore apples are still a big thing. Every spring there's an Apple Blossom Parade and festival and in late summer there's an Apple Fair where apples are served an a variety of ways. Gravensteins are tart and make great hard cider and there's a local pizza place that puts them on pizza for the couple months they're available. Apple dumplings are apples that are cored and wrapped in pastry dough and baked with a cinnamon sauce that caramelizes as it bakes. They're perfect with vanilla ice cream. 😋

To make Salt Water Taffy, you have to boil sugar and corn syrup (and some other stuff) to the Tread stage (250-253 F / 102 - 112 C) and then work it to death to make a chewy candy. When making it at home, you just do this by hand. Key Lime Pie is my favorite. It is made from a special kind of lime. It grows only in tropical and subtropical areas. It is a small and very acidic fruit and grows on a small bushy tree. It has a wonderful flavor in pies, even better than lemon meringue pie IMHO. For those that don't know, real key lime pie is not bright green.

Watching from Kansas & I had never heard of Sheridan's before today, but that's probably because the only Kansas location is in Topeka. IF the favorite desert is really Frozen Custard, the more common establishment would be Freddy's Frozen Custard. I don't know the history of Sheridan's, but Freddy's was started by an Army Veteran from Kansas. The great thing about Freddy's is that you aren't limited to just frozen custard, but you can also get an actual meal there. Considering frozen custard usually makes me sick, I typically pass on it.
I'm surprised that the Dirt Cake or Peppernut Cookies were not on the list for Kansas.

Huckleberries are in things all over Montana. But, if you want a pie filling, it's almost $30 a jar. If you want a gallon size bag of huckleberries, 15 years ago they were $60 a bag, have no idea what they are now. I don't see huckleberry pie on any manus and I don't know anyone who makes them. So, this is always amusing. We can get the ice cream, honey, jam, chocolates but I've never seen a huckleberry pie.

I used to pick huckleberries on my grandparents' property during the early 2000's. We've made huckleberry pie, but we always had to go out and pick it ourselves. I have very fond memories of this berry and plan on growing this shade loving bush on my property so others can experience the delicious Wonder that is a huckleberry pie. (It is sweet first and a little tart; if you can get past the tiny seeds, it is a wonderfully tasty pie to have with whipped cream on top!)

Peanut butter can be a healthy part of a balanced diet-just a small amount packs plenty of protein, healthy fats, and essential vitamins and minerals. However, added sugar, salt, and unhealthy oils may make it more of a junk food. It really depends on the peanut butter you buy. The health food store near me has a giant grinder and you just hold your container under it and grind out what you want. It's not very smooth but it sure is tasty.

Quick banana pudding is Tasty, but it cannot hold a candle to a real homemade Banana pudding. that's just a fact. Here in the South, all of our grandmother's had cakes or pies always in the house for after dinner. When I was looking for recipes to do a family cookbook, I found that all of my aunt's and uncles cooked by sight. Nobody wrote anything down, but everybody had dozens and dozens of recipes for pies and cakes.😅😅😅 I have some recipes for homemade Southern pies and cakes if you want to try them.

My parents' house in Florida has a key lime tree. That image in the video is NOT real key lime pie. Key limes are yellow, not green (at least not when ripe). It's a mix of key lime juice, and those are REALLY tiny - about 25 make 3/4 cup or 177 ml; 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk, and 2 eggs for one pie. It's a creamy yellow color and very sweet, but very tart/sour. I make a couple for neighbors at Christmas because that is when they're ripe, if I can get my parents to send me some. You get a good arm workout squeezing 25 limes per pie!
I'm in Georgia, and a peach dessert is too obvious, in my opinion. More people clamber for my pecan pies than any peach cobbler I've made. Pecan pie (the pronunciation is a debate all into itself) is sweet corn syrup (which is highly regulated in Europe), eggs, and pecans. It's SUPER sweet! But the nuts balance it out...sort of. I'd claim a pecan pie for Georgia than a peach something. Maybe a peanut butter pie since we're also known for peanuts?
Beignets in Louisiana are drops from Heaven. Absolutely addictive, from the first bite. Fried dough with sugar on top. So light and flaky, with so much powdered sugar on top....oh, now I'm really drooling.
