The weight felt in this scene is immense. Those blades are a constant reminder of the biggest mistake he ever made. A mistake that cost him everything. no, it's something to get emotional since the same blades that killed his family is now needed to save his son. it's so ironic that it makes the blades have a mix of horrible memories and now good ones
As far as I know, Tyr's not dead, just imprisoned by Odin, who told everyone that he had died (that's what norse mythology says). Just imagine how along Kratos and he could get. They both are "good" gods now and both ars gods of war who have traveled through different realms, AND both want Odin dead.
0:00 As Kratos entered his home, memories of dread and sorrow filled his tarnished soul. What was once a cabin in the forest was now a thing he used to deny and hide his past. What sins and atrocities he committed were buried deep underneath the soil and wood of his new home. What rage and passion once burned inside him was dulled by years of guilt and regret. His son, his only hope to a brighter future was now in danger because of him. How could he be a father after all he's done? He was once a monster, and no amount of time could heal the wounds that scarred him. Physically and mentally. Opening the hatch, he saw a wooden box covered by cloth. Slowly, he reached down and took it. What he was about to do went against everything he swore to abandon. Opening it, black blades glimmered in the rays of sunlight that reached trough the cracks of his home. Hesitation was the only thing that came to him at that moment. But would it be stronger to resist it, or give into it, but use it for good? Feeling the blades, they were still sharp. Horrible memories came back. The echoes of his past reminded how much blood those weapons spilled in their lifetime. Forged from rage and death, their craving for battle never died. Would he be willing to wear them again? Grabbing the black chains, he wrapped them around his arms. This was a feeling he was all too familiar with. The scars on his arms that still bled shivered. Stepping outside, monsters and demons appeared. 2:27 He had enough. Years of suppressing his true feelings and anger had led up to this moment. Gripping the blades tightly until his knuckles turned white, he let out the loud shout of a spartan, and began to slaughter.. He hacked and slashed at everything near him. Monsters, trees, stone, it didn't matter. The rage had been too much. He was unleashing everything he had at everything around him. The ground on which he was standing on was shaking from his aggressive strikes. The earth trembled at the once forgotten rage of the spartan. He was angry at the gods. He was angry at the monsters which attacked him. He was angry at himself for what he once was. With each swing and throw of the burning blades, destruction was imminent. The fire in his heart was back, and nothing was going to stop him. Gritting his teeth, he gripped the blades even tighter and swore on his own life, that he would save his son...
I honestly felt really happy but really sad when Kratos got the blades back I mean he tried so hard to avoid his past but he was put into a situation where he had to go back to it and it was awesome but heartbreaking as well it truly gave me mixed emotions
Hes Cursed man, thats his fate....i know fate is another lie told by the Gods, Nothing written cannot be unwritten....Sure in part 2 he saw his fate then He doesnt know his fate now.
For him to bare such a burden, For his past to haunt him drastically, For the spirit of Athena to shame him, For his past dug from the grave, For his anguish and inner conflict, For the love of his only son, For setting aside and binding old wounds, For wielding his original weapons, For slaying with what the God of War had given him, For reliving the nightmares again, Kratos is doing this all to save his son and to push on as he always had, as his effort and life is sung within this music, magnificent.
@@squashmallow2006 Indeed, in their desperate time of need, even when their life hangs in the balance. There are measures needed to be taken and past mistakes faced to do what is necessary to save the ones you love, especially your children.
@@nicksieben7701 It's also why throughout their journey, Kratos only teaches Atreus to be a good warrior, not a god. A god may use power frivolously. But a warrior must exercise self-control, and discipline. He knows exactly how painful it is to wear those chains again, but this time, he has one specific goal. It's not for glory, not for gratification, or ambition, not for himself. It's to save the one last remnant of his family that still gives him happiness. His son. Let him suffer all his nightmares. But if it means Atreus would live, then so be it.
Exiled God Father's Shame Mother's Hope Wounds Burn Settle the Past This entire chant brings the picture perfect moment. No reworked previous theme could fit in like this one.
@@FrostshadowStudios0310 "man i wish they put the old theme back" yeah I agree with you, Kratos was trying to forget the past and it literally just kills the vibe of a character development.
@@Mr.Scott86 You could also say think the Blade of Chaos is using Kratos' rage as the fuel to the magic that lit the flame. Which is also just as cool.
The game does such a beautiful job setting this moment up. You completely forget about them as you get so used to using the Leviathan Axe. Then you get the Blades and it all comes rushing back. You're playing God of War
People get so hyped during this scene. I didn't, I saw Krato's face and understood what this meant for him, he's honestly terrified of becoming the monster he when he used those blades. That's why he, Kratos, the ghost of Sparta, was shaking when he was talking those blades back.
That is part of the reason why people were screaming with hype...... They(real fans) knew what those blades did...... And now what purpose it's going to serve now.....
@@MrBrennanMatt OP has a point. Kratos tried so hard to move on from his past life, to bare memory of the atrocities he did, all the pain, suffering, death, and destruction it caused to everything, including himself. Bringing back the blades, the tormenting memories he desperately tried to suppress return, and return with such a psychological surge that his hands are literally trembling. He is literally going back to his old life. But the moment Athena calls him a monster, Kratos stands up, and accepts who he truly is. He is the God of War, and he will stop at nothing to use the tools of his past that tormented his life, to save his son. In the end, at the top of the mountain in Jotunheim, Kratos finally feels free, as the world now knows the truth of what he is, and he himself accepts WHO he is. He is a monster, he is a father, he is the God of War, but more importantly, he is Kratos.
The part where he gets the blades from the basement is called Giant's Prayer, it's also played on the dynamic theme. The battle theme also plays on Muspelheim Trial 1.
Me!!! I'm to hyped, I started playing God of war series recently, this series it's something special! You cannot imagine how hyped I am for the new God Of War.
This whole scene plays a bigger role in Ragnarok, when you defeat King Hrolf. Kratos explains that even weapons with tainted pasts could still be used for good. Their legacies could be rewritten. This was the first step right here. By the end of Ragnarok, he has made peace with the blades and accepted them as they are. Tools, to complete a task.
I just noticed when athena speaks, the foreign sound of Greek harps and tunes interjects the usually norse theme we've grown to be used to. Neat touch for the moment.
the game is one of the best ever made, let me explain kratos, once full of hate anger and rage, he could kill gods, monsters, titans, nations without even thinking twice the person who killed everything and everybody, the person who works for himself, for revenge on every god at the exact moment where atreus was ill and he needed to save him at that exact moment he would do anything to save him and most important, he begged freya to help him he was on his knees begging a god for help he will use the blades, he swore never to use again he accepts his past what he did what he will do and what he does he used the blades he once killed his wife and daughter to save his son at that moment kratos, the monster changed everything for one person and that person is atreus that was the best and probably the most emotional part of the game for me and believe me, brok said they forged mjolnir and knows what quality is, and the blades are something special, you cant set the power of mjolnir and the BoC at same level now think what would happen if thor or even odin lays hand on atreus he will turn into the monster he once was, but to save and protect his son imagine kratos, full of anger hate and revenge, now fighting for someone that my guys thats the part you need to understand

Nice choice wish I had a ps4 have Xbox 1 since it was cheaper also we don't even get enough money to buy it since it is 299 or more too expensive. Xbox one was 120.
First time seeing this scene, Legitimately thought he was going to stab Ghost-Athena on his way out the cabin. The music and atmosphere totally made me forget Kratos has changed.
Am I the only one that associates this theme to the LOTR soundtrack, when they run over the bridge in Moria to escape the Balrog? I knew I recognized the tune from somewhere, and only just made the connection today... not really surprising that Bear would take inspiration from LOTR tbh.
The only reason you feel anything in this scene is simple, music, fantastic body language/acting and animation, also the way the camera moves. It goes to show all these little things add up to make a scene memorable. I knew what the blades of chaos were but I never played the original games at all, only a demo of God of war 3 on ps3 and that was it. But damn I felt everything in this. The way he strokes the blades, the way he puts hand on the gatekeeper after he takes its heart, almost like he’s apologising. You feel the weight of what these blades hold over his soul, he hates them, but needs them. Utterly fantastic. I’ve been playing games since I was 9 on the ps1. And this was the most memorable experience I’ve ever had in game. I’ve played it 5 times already I love it. It’s up there with The Last of Us 1 and dare I say it’s actually better. Well done to everyone who worked on this game. You made a masterpiece and it’s unreasonable to ask for lightning to strike twice (pardon the pun) but man I hope it can with Ragnarok.
Wrong, the only reason why you feel anything in this scene is because it's highlighted as important. If you never played the old ones you're like "oh this must be an important momment", If you have played the old trilogy you know exacly how important it is because you have seen the real Kratos in his deepest, in his peak as a written character. Gow 4 is the weakest of all God of War games in all regards, especially gameplay. The only thing it has more than the old games are graphics.
@@cloudshifternow kraos is a better writer character and the story and emotions were so much better here than just graphics bro, it was better and the weakest one was gow ascension, and what you said is wrong, highlighted as important is absurd, people who played the og trilogy and played this will know about kratos's past and the memories, everything about it, not just highlighted as important
These 2 songs just show how much work was put on everything, backround, animation, modeling, shading and damn even the music, like from the past games I knew it would be good but damn... I didn't expect this
"Though i did all i could, though you taught me i could be more, i hid my past, now i need it to save what is dear to me. Truly there is no crueller irony than this" (my thoughts of what Kratos would think when he had to use the blades to save Atreus.)
I played god of war 3 for the first time when I was around 12. Fell in love with the game. After going back and playing most of the old series kratos and the blades became one of my favorites in gaming history. And after playing this game years after god of war 3, I could only think one thing when I got the blades again. “Still got it” *cheeky smile*
Man using those blades again made me feel like an old man. I remember when the music dropped at my first use of the blades I let out the loudest roar in my room and just started going ham with the R1 button laughing like a Villian.
At 1:00 you can hear the somber tone of the music, almost like you feel Kratos' hesitation of using the Blades but willing to put his past behind to save his son.
I honestly love listening to game OST's. And the God of War 4 OST is hands down one of the greatest ones ever made, it tops any of the Halo, Gears of War, and Assassin's Creed OST's. Not to mention it's better than all of the COD soundtracks as well
I played this while retrieving my digitizer tablet because I needed to draw a map to the next DnD session. And right when the drawing software was ready, the battle theme started. What wonderful moment of my day
The long and the short of this moment: "You will _always_ be a monster," Athena scolded. "I know," Kratos responded with genuine serenity, taming the beast within him, "but I am _your_ monster no longer." An angry yet *composed* Kratos exited his cottage, walking through the specter of Athena. "Alright, brother," Mimir said excitedly, "Let's see what those blades can do!"
I just played this part days ago. Just when mimir said have a go with Blade Of Chaos, cracking my thumb and index finger and start do combos. Man it was priceless feeling
I just finished this game and I remember thinking 'Oh I bet the old god of war games gave him like a million weapons and they scaled it back for this-' since I had only seen him with the Blades Of Chaos in PlayStation Battle Royale But when I saw those blades get unwrapped from that blanket thing I fully understood what was happening. It felt like unlocking the Dragon Of Dojima and Mad Dog Of Shimano styles in Yakuza 0, fanservice, but meaningful fan servive for the plot.
The fact that the blades are bound to him even when he isn't wearing them has got to be painful to look at when they were used to kill his previous family...

2:27
He had enough.

Instead of running from his past, he accepted it.
But at least this time he uses the blades for a good purpose, to save his son.
For him to bare such a burden,
For his past to haunt him drastically,
For the spirit of Athena to shame him,
For his past dug from the grave,
For his anguish and inner conflict,
For the love of his only son,
For setting aside and binding old wounds,
For wielding his original weapons,
For slaying with what the God of War had given him,
For reliving the nightmares again,
Kratos is doing this all to save his son and to push on as he always had, as his effort and life is sung within this music, magnificent.

Wow you’re edgy
It's a relic, good or bad it's still a piece of history to the ones who played the og GoW games

Neat touch for the moment.
the game is one of the best ever made, let me explain
kratos, once full of hate anger and rage, he could kill gods, monsters, titans, nations
without even thinking twice
the person who killed everything and everybody, the person who works for himself, for revenge
on every god
at the exact moment where atreus was ill and he needed to save him
at that exact moment he would do anything to save him
and most important, he begged freya to help him
he was on his knees begging a god for help
he will use the blades, he swore never to use again
he accepts his past
what he did
what he will do
and
what he does
he used the blades he once killed his wife and daughter to save his son
at that moment kratos, the monster changed
everything for one person
and that person is atreus
that was the best and probably the most emotional part of the game for me
and believe me,
brok said they forged mjolnir and knows what quality is, and the blades are something special,
you cant set the power of mjolnir and the BoC at same level
now think what would happen if thor or even odin lays hand on atreus
he will turn into the monster he once was, but to save and protect his son
imagine kratos, full of anger hate and revenge, now fighting for someone
that my guys
thats the part you need to understand
"Return my son, or you may meet the god I once was."
Brok: That's gotta be a family heirloom!
Kratos: NO. Nor will it ever be.

I’ve played it 5 times already
I love it. It’s up there with The Last of Us 1 and dare I say it’s actually better. Well done to everyone who worked on this game. You made a masterpiece and it’s unreasonable to ask for lightning to strike twice (pardon the pun) but man I hope it can with Ragnarok.
Very well said 👏
Wrong, the only reason why you feel anything in this scene is because it's highlighted as important. If you never played the old ones you're like "oh this must be an important momment",
If you have played the old trilogy you know exacly how important it is because you have seen the real Kratos in his deepest, in his peak as a written character.
