The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.
In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was.
The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. 4:20 it's more like one gun with two barrels. Basically West chose rotary cannons that need electrical systems to operate and are bigger and larger, while Soviets went for the old German idea, scaled it up to cannons, and focused on that - smaller, lighter, purely mechanical - no electrical systems needed, if one side jams the other will still work - however, RoF compared to rotary cannons is lower. Also, these have static RoF - rotary cannons need to spool up so the first few shots are at slower RoF.
Both ideas have pros and cons I guess.

I have a book that has pilot experiences of flying the MiG-21. Everyone who flew it absolutely loved it. The Phantom could outrun it and out turn it but the MiG-21 out climbs the Phantom and could pull “instant” G aerobatics that the Phantom could not follow. You could break the MiG-21 out of controlled flight to spin faster then you could with a controlled maneuver. As soon as you let go of the controls the MiG would start flying again. It was also capable of hammerhead turns.

The actual SMT is an MF with the extra fuel tank. It entered service in 1971, 11 years after the MIG-21F-13.
In the 70's a regiment of Soviet SMT's was stationed in Hungary (Tököl), normally equipped with two external fuel tanks, two AA missiles and on the central pylon preparation for a tactical nuke... This load out was enough to reach targets in Northern Italy 600 km away, drop a nuke, have a little dogfight on the way in or out and return home.

Hey Phly! Nice phlying mate. There are math formulas that are used in training fighter pilots, that will teach them that the most optimum speed to evade missiles is around Mach 0.85 (1,049 KPH). The most important factor is the Kinetic energy which is K = mv (square). m is the mass of your jet and v stands for speed. See, the faster you go, the greater is your kinetic energy by the square of that speed, and the more energy you have built up in your jet. That built up kinetic energy is what your wings (creating lift) fight against to change in a turn. A straight line, constant speed, exerts no g's on a pilot, but the moment you want to accelerate (or decelerate) or turn, aha! physics kicks in, and since these are all forms of accelerations (change in the rate of speed - including turning), then there is an opposition to these changes (an inertia), and the amount of push you have to exert on a plane to make it change direction, is directly proportional to your speed! I've seen a complete study with graphs showing that a speed of Mach 0.80-0.90 offers the best chance to pilots to avoid a 30g (average for AA missile - so they say) capable rocket coming on your six. Yes, that means when you cruise at around 1,000kph, you can pull a mere 3g and evade a Mach 3 or 4 missile, trying its best to hit you (or proximity-fuse your ass) pulling all it can at 30g's. Another way to see this is in terms of turning radius. You must have observed that your turning radius (and instantaneous turn rate) is much wider at high speed, than just-below Mach 1. At Mach 2 it takes forever to do a 360, even when you pull 10g's. A sidewinder will shoot down easily that plane, itself reaching Mach 2.5 top speed, but being able to pull a lot more than 10g's. On the extreme upper range of this, you have an SR71 phlying at 65-70,000 feet and he might very well escape a SAM racing at him at Mach 4, by out-running it at Mach 3.2 - the SAM just runs our of propellant. Another "fun-fact" is that physics is filled with interactions of 2, 3 or more parameters, which must be also considered acting at the same time. Like wing loading: usually calculated using Normal take off weight divided by total wing surface area. You love the Zero, so do I. The A6M2 had 22 lbs of weight per square feet of lift-inducing wing surface area. You don't particularly like the P51, me neither. It had around 43 to 45 lbs/sq feet. So, the Zero out-turns a Mustang like crazy (speed for speed). Hope this is not too confusing the way I tried to explain. Hey I hope you're reading this because I've been a big fan for years and, like many will tell you; you're the best! Yeah suck it up like the man you are, and wear your crown! The patch notes say aim 9 bs now have 10 kg overload. The only difference between them is that aim 9 es can shoot at 5Km (but who would ever do that) and that it’s heavier and slows your plane down more
