  • Hi Everyone,
    Today we replace the black seatbelts with blue seatbelts on the BMW i8! This was a bit of a project, but, in the end, well worth the effort. We were quoted about $2500 from the dealership for the job, but wee able to source the original BMW blue belts and a few spare clips for under $500. Not gonna lie, some of those panels were a bare, but just take your time and you can totally do this!

    This was way more involved and time consuming that I would have guessed, just by reading the shop manual. Wow! This information is extremely valuable, however. Thanks for taking the time to show all the difficult parts to deal with and some suggestions to help make the project easier. I know that other i8 owners will definitely want to see this as having blue seat belts is desirable. I know that they'll save valuable time and frustration by using this video. Bravo!

      Thanks Pat! I know, right? I really though it was going to be 20-30min tops... Not so much... I'm just glad I didn't run out of clips ;) I hope the guys on the i8 forum dig it.

    That was quite the job! Congratulations to both of you for clear, easy to follow explanations and great camera work. Had I attempted that project I am pretty sure it would have involved a lot of cursing, broken parts and ultimately a trip to the dealer which would have brought on more cursing. I am amazed at how calm and collected you were. The door struts I can handle, this - no thanks. You have made me truly appreciate that my i8 came with blue belts. So, when are you changing the rear seat belts?😀

    Hi Franny and Heidi, this is Jim from the Chicago area again. What a job! Nicely done. I have done some work similar to that and ended up breaking tabs and connectors and other things over and over again. The one thing that kept going through my mind watching you was how much easier it is to even take out and re-install the entire engine in my pre A ‘55 356 coupe. I don’t know if this will help in the future projects (especially if you have latex sensitivity), but you might want to try right and left latex exam gloves. They will give you more sensitivity to feeling things and being right and left handed they will also prevent you from having something called “ surgeons glove” (A rather painful condition similar to carpal tunnel syndrome). The price is similar to the vinyl gloves you use now but I don’t know if they come in that pretty blue color.Keep up the good work. Great videos.

    This video is going to save somebody lots of time. It reminds me of my visits to the Mini Factory in Oxford, however the trim in the mini is simpler. Definitely worth a visit if it survives Corona and Brexit.
    BMW interiors do seem to take time. I replaced the struts on my 7 series and it was far more work to remove the trim than it was to actually unbolt suspension parts to get the struts out. Furthermore I would not trust many people to do that job on my car. If I break something I will deal with it properly, its very easy to create an annoying rattle or buzz by incorrectly fitting something.

  • @paulmoe1
    @paulmoe1 4 роки тому

    Wow!! All that work to just change the color of the seat belts (not including the cost of the "deal" belts). However, the video was very informative, and very detailed. Learned a lot about being patient and use the right tools to remove the various panels. Great job! Lucky for me, I have the blue belts, but the one thing that bugs me is the fact that the belts slip out of the hook on the side of the seat where the belts are routed. I see that on the newer i8's, the there are clips/leather latches that solve this problem. I'm keeping my eye out for something that I can use to do the same thing. If you don't mind, I have a question unrelated to the i8. I'm thinking of purchasing a used Porsche Panamera (2012-2014), as a daily driver, in a couple of years from now. I seen several UA-cam videos stating that these are very unreliable. I would appreciate your views of this car. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

    This is unrelated to your seat belt video, but I have a video request regarding the I-8 and the PPF with ceramic coating. I would love a video on your experience over the winter when commuting in the CO weather. Was it easy to keep the car clean by virtue of the ceramic coating? Did the PPF get any sand damage?

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 роки тому

      That is a good question! We haven't really driven that car all that much (we just haven't driven all that much), but to PPF and the ceramic look like they did when it was applied. I think it did take a small rock hit that the PPF deflected, but that is about all I've noticed. With all this working from home (I'm usually home four days a week and Heidi is home all the time) the cars have been sitting a bit :(

  • @theogantenbein7870

    Glad that obviously it doesn’t matter which make the car is, the B-pillar panel is a PITA 😂. It‘s extra fun, if there is a height adjustable seat belt involved. And yes, the headliners are amazingly tough. Interesting that BMW says just to disconnect the airbag/belt retractor cables. Usually you are strongly advised to disconnect the battery first.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 роки тому

      I really wondered about that too. I searched through the manual, but couldn't find anything on it. I have a sneaky suspicion that if you remover the 12V battery the big battery will just take its place - maybe? It was a bit scary, but worked out in the end...

    • @theogantenbein7870
      @theogantenbein7870 4 роки тому

      Good point. Maybe the airbag system is fed by the high voltage battery through the DC/DC converter. And they don’t want you to mess around with the big battery, that’s for sure 😁

    Hello Heidi and Franny, hope you're all doing well given all the news out there. Anyway, did you two notice BMW announced that production of the i8 will end in April? How do you think this'll effect the value (collectible status) of the i8? BMW did say a successor is on the way, but this new EV is to take a different approach than the i8.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  4 роки тому +1

      Great question... I would like to think that the i8 will go the way of the Z8. It is different enough and nothing like it in the upcoming cars. The replacement is pretty weird. But, cars are generally a terrible investment ;) I suppose time will tell, but it will probably be 10+years down the road. I hope the car holds up well...
