A fey creature is perfect because they can be unpredictable, which fits Ashley's playstyle perfectly. I can honestly say I never accurately predict what she'll say next!
Amazing. As horrifying as Laudna can get, she's so amazingly pure and precious. The way she cheered for that moldy case? Adorable. Also, she has this late Victorian/1910s lady vibe. Like as if she's a resurrected high society dame. Breathtaking characterization, really. The most unique PC I've seen in a while (aside from like Jester for example). She's my favorite.
Ashley: is a wildly talented voice actor with several fantastic characters under her belt Also Ashley: starts every impression with *exactly* the same "uhh hello" without fail
@@transientanus Or maybe it's because Travis, when asked for Grog's father's name, answered "Stonejaw" - not remembering that he himself was named "Grog Strongjaw", which would make his father "Stonejaw Strongjaw"
@@transientanus Ah yes, let me feel superior over a inside joke of the third order in a niche community online. I'll refrain from directly quoting Tal, you are tuned in enough to understand the point anyway.
Bit late to this, but I like how Travis played a 5th level character who has such a huge powerspike ability-wise with extra attack and a +3 magic weapon by distinctly choosing to make him do nothing in combat, very sporting of him

It reminds me of school, but also is interesting as I don’t remember much note taking by most of the cast in Campaign 2’s start. Either I just don’t remember or they have learned since then XD
travis, in absolute disbelief, looking between marisha roleplaying puppeteering a dead rat and matt: "what.. happened... when she was making this character" and matt just "... a lot" 1:31:20
If you haven't checked out the first season of Exandria Unlimited, I highly recommend it for Fearne alone. I love Pike and Yasha, but this character just seemed to unlock something within her.
@@steeveewuzzheer1992 It was a one shot with like 4 episodes with Abria as the dm. Its a totally different vibe and kinda silly at times, but still good. Its got Liam, Ashley, Robbie Daymond, and 2 other guests. Its not essential to watch but it debuts Orym, Fearne, and Dorian
I love how Imogen and Ashton are the only ones who aren't unnerved by Laudna consistently. Imogen because she loves her, Ashton because they thinks she's dope.
And Freshly Cut Grass!!! As of these two eps, they don't seem bothered one bit by her. Just their happy self. That may change I don't know, I'm only this far, and I haven't even finished this ep... But honestly the only one who seems to have a problem is Travis's character and NPC's.
Shout out to the new Critters who are still trying to learn everyone's names and their second episode turns out to be THIS episode... EDITED TO ADD: Here, new fans - have some essential older study material! ua-cam.com/video/7_oH58pq0Ac/v-deo.html (zero spoilers, just goofy fun)
Is saw this comment before I started the show and OMG I am dead it was brilliant to for them to play each other and all the dramatization is absolutely amazing.
I love that Ashton cares not for the law of the land and is ready to throw down at any given moment, but also takes good care of FCG and makes a point to stop Laudna from stealing the last few coppers off a man who is obviously struggling with alcoholism. He’s a very good punk and I’m excited to see him smash more things. Excited to see more of all of the characters, really!
Love how Travis immediately jumped to add the creepy vibe to Marisha's Message spell and the rest of the cast fell in like dominos on it. They didn't even look at it each other, just "we do this now." lol. Wonderful improv. Matt was so legitimately surprised by his players yet again that it cracked him up.
The "yes, and" truly on display at a professional level. (Also double points that they all chimed in so perfectly. I hope yo get half that good with my voice)
I’ve never heard Chaotic Good so perfectly encapsulated than in Taliesin’s comment: “Never take copper, that’s just kicking someone when they’re down. You take silver if they’re an asshole and you take gold regardless but you never take copper.’
@@keirgomcginlay2044 I always think of lawful good as abiding by someone else's code of honour, but chaotic good as abiding by your own. It's been six months since I watched this but as I recall he was talking about taking money from an unconscious body without consent, which could hardly be seen as lawful.
@@ShaneDavisDFTBA I can just never understand 'chaotic good', which is on me. I always think of 'lawful' as being consistent. If you have a code of honour, or a set of standards, rules that you follow, you are lawful. 'I would steal from a man if X' is lawful. Doing whatever whenever however and whyever would be chaotic. 'Don't steal copper unless you feel like it I guess, maybe'. I just... I don't understand chaotic good.
@@keirgomcginlay2044 I think of it as Lawful being following the literal law of the land, and Chaotic as doing whatever you want. Then it's your morals on the scale of good to evil that limit "whatever you want". So if you were Lawful Good, you always do good things that are lawful. Even if the law said you could kick a dog, you wouldn't do it because it's evil. Likewise if the law said you couldn't park your wagon outside the town hall then you wouldn't, even though it's not inherently evil. If you were Chaotic Evil, you would do whatever the hell you wanted, regardless of its impact on others because it's the epitome of selfishness. Not only would you park outside town hall but you'd run over a small child if they were in your way. If however you were chaotic good, you'll do whatever you want so long as it doesn't violate your own moral code of ethics, so an arbitrary law wouldn't stop you from parking outside the town hall but getting there and seeing that it would block the only access to a public water trough would stop you because you're not a dick. If you're a Firefly Fan then think of Chaotic Evil as Niska and Chaotic Good as Malcolm Reynolds. Or if you're more a fan of Doctor Who then Chaotic Evil is The Master and Chaotic Good is The Doctor.
@@ShaneDavisDFTBA But then what about a killer who has a code? Like, he refuses to kill certain targets. Wouldn't that be Lawful Evil? He's evil, but he follows his own laws, his own code. But then if you are good and follow a certain personal code only, you are suddenly chaotic? Though I can still see someone chaotic good following their own code or set of rules if you will. But having no problem breaking them if it's for a good cause. Take the antagonist from Serenity, the Firefly Movie. He's Lawful Evil imo. But he also doesn't follow the laws of the federation(wasn't that the name of the ruling faction?), he murders children if he has to. But only if he has to. All because he believes this will help the world become a better place. He also knows that he himself has no place in that future. So he clearly has a code he follows. A set of laws if you will. But at the same time, doesn't follow the laws of the nation he belongs to. But he also doesn't break those laws and do horrible shit for selfish reasons, or just because. Hmm. The more I think of it, the more confusing the whole system is. I understand why most just use it as a guideline for their characters. A starting point if you will. And yes, The Doctor and Malcolm Reynolds are definitely Chaotic Good. But then, so are most protagonists I'd say.
Yeah I don't know why the current consensus made it seem like they're doing a bad thing and are criminals with a bounty, if anything they tried to do good. They only mess with the underground organization of the city, and the council is on their side.
@@zeluqa issue is that criminal organization seem to control the guard for the most part so an entire city is after them basically. So they are being hunted and do have a bounty on their heads. If the amiee's narrative telephone is anything to go by.
3:04:21 Fearne: "Do you have any children?" Bertrand: "Not that I know of, you?" Fearne: *"Not that I know of"* And I'm pretty sure Robbie was the only person who caught how weird that comment was
Oh my god, I utterly ADORE the cast doing the Laudna message effect and making it all creepy. I desperately hope they continue that throughout the entire campaign.
YES! I noticed this and immediately added it to my notebook for ghost/elder god interactions. Everyone was giggling through it but it was so cool and creepy af.
My favourite part is the fact that Travis is the instigator of the creepy whispers. He’s going to regret that so much when it’s his turn to get a Message from Laudna, and I am really looking forward to that.
Marisha's character is quickly becoming my favorite of this campaign. Side note: I'm pretty sure her original goal was to unsettle Travis as much as possible.
I'm pretty sure she wanted to roll a necromancer, and Matt was like: you're gonna roll an evil character, cause necromancy is outlawed? Where's talks machina? Damn it I need to know why she didn't choose necromancer, especially after that rat puppet shit.
I think my favorite part is that it isn't miserably depressing like his last two. Don't get me wrong, he did a great job but it's nice to see something new.
It reminds me more of his priest character in the ?deadlands? oneshot they did for charity once. I always wanted to see him play that in a full campaign though because he seemed to bring a lot of life to that role even if he was being slightly ironic. I was actually holding out hope that when Laura started in with her cowboy accent that she was going to reprise a little bit of Stinky Jewels from that as well but no luck haha I thought it would be pretty sick for Laura to play a gunslinger but I am excited to see her play a sorcerer.
I really hope he sticks around! I was a little unsure since I didn’t watch EU, and I’ve only seen C2 so I was used to the usual 8 and I don’t like change but he’s so nice to have!
@@SorchaSublime I mean it wasn't helped that the pandemic basically killed any potential for guests for almost half the campaign. Also Matt Colville was supposed to come down as a recurring character but the party went to Xorhas instead of sticking around in the Empire.
Out of all the potential Halloween costumes they could've done, the fact they chose to dress up as each other is absolutely brilliant (especially Ashley as Travis lmfao)
I'd love to see them all do a one shot where they play each other's characters. Or do a one/two shot of a module I played years ago where the players all play the same character, just that they're all a different alignment (it was a potion mishap that caused him to split into a number of versions of himself).
Especially for episode 2 of a new campaign, when presumably a bunch of new viewers started watching who don't know them yet. Many new viewers probably got dragged along to the theatre showings of C3E1. Bold choice.
@@creativeguidous because this fandom is very very toxic. In general your best of just ignoring chat and comments as much as possible. It’s super depressing how awful it is
I am still, hours later, absolutely CRYING at Sam perched on the chair and his introduction as Marisha 🤣 and of course Matt’s ON POINT version of Laura
Orym deliberately pratfalling off the crates to draw attention off of Fearne when she blunders in without a plan and sticks out like a sore thumb was brilliant.
@@captainufo4587 I think, Laudna is more of a victim of the Briarwoods. I had one horrifying thought: Remember the Vox Machina lookalikes that hang on the Sun Tree? Imagine Laudna being Keyleth's lookalike, being raised as an undead after hanging there for a while....
As the seasons go on I'm increasingly impressed with Marisha's level of body comedy. She uses her body and her facial expressions better than probably anybody on the cast. Laudna is a perfect character for her.
@@AxelHenxIt's like five or six years of experience being critical role at that point right? All of them have come so far. I really like how much more comfortable Marisha is. Even just from the start of campaign to through the end you could see real growth. The on screen chemistry is incredible
Taliesin's really good at these nonpretentious thief's codes. "You don't take copper, take silver if they're an asshole, take gold regardless" this season, and "don't steal from people who are happy" last season.
Now if he could just be really good at honoring his rolls and not try to sidestep them when he rolls low. I'm sort of getting a vibe from some of the cast that he's sort of on watch.
@@TaraxOfficial. Just observing Liam watching his rolls but also the responses to him trying to not have his 8 insight check or 1 stealth actually count. Fresh Cut Grass: we were all named after specific tasks. Oatmeal just chopped firewood and made up campsites :) Fearne, desperately trying to talk about Pussy: *what were the other one's tasks*
I love that Laudna and Imogen has a similar interaction and vibe as Nott had to Caleb, compliments, whole-hearted belief and both telling their friend they could get into a school if they wanted to, it's very wholesome to see
@@JoshGanzer That moment with the trail mix was PEAK sibling energy. Laura didn't even look over while pranking Liam, it honestly looked like she did it on instinct.
@@frabjuosity I was laughing so hard at that it made my head hurt for a second. Liam's "wtf is happening right now?!" face when she initially grabbed his arm lmao
I’m here to back up that opinion because yeah Marisha is an absolute delight to watch! I know she won’t be pop-popping this campaign but hopefully she’ll get too excited doing one of her Form Of Dread descriptions and Sam can have a taste of Liam’s experience sitting next to her lol
I agree whole heatedly with these opinions. I adore her character design and personality. I'm excited to see how she developed her character and I'm intrigued to know her back story. Pate derolo 🤣🤣🤣. The best
Whenever Laudna casts Message to anyone except Imogen, everyone has to repeat whatever she says in a dozen echoing unholy disembodied whispers and that just has to be the rule. I hope they make it a running gag for Campaign 3 because that was GOLD lmao
3:41:43 when Imogen is talking about just hearing everything it’s so relatable as some one with sensory processing disorders. I love the CR cast and how diverse and relatable their characters are!
@@artemisknowstoomuch1027 I mean, there's a little bit of a difference there. Bell could have just had a one night stand and left, never knowing the results. I believe if Fearne had a child she would have BEEN PREGNANT AND GIVEN BIRTH. One would hope she would remember that :D
@@Pingviinimursu I don’t know if either of their genital situations have been confirmed. And there *have* been confirmed trans characters in CR before, just not PCs.
@@Nixahma It is very kind of you to believe that Ashley has any control over what she says during Narrative Telephone, but it's all stream of consciousness, it's 99% likely she really did forget Grog's surname for a bit.
2:34:24 Matt being such a nuts GM who clearly did a ton of fabric and clothing research trying very hard to give cool info while not just gushing about the details too hard is both incredible and adorable.
I don’t care what anyone says I hope Robbie becomes a permanent member of the table. I feel he flows nicely with the table even though he is a relatively new player (imo). I know he is a guest but I really hope he just stays. Also I liked EXU and seeing these characters make a return for C3 makes my heart so happy. Plus these characters were made for C3 but used in EXU to test out. I look forward to all the shenanigans.
They've stated this campaign is going to be very different from others so I wouldn't settle in with anything the way it is now since it's so early. But for the record I also really like robbie at the table and the EXU characters returning.
Still not sure what I think about having 8 players logistics-wise but I will say this: Robbie is really making a case for himself. He’s funny, quick-thinking, and most important of all has amazeballs chemistry with the rest of the cast.
Robbie is great. I also think there could be a middle ground between permanent member and guest-for-a-few-episodes. For example, they could have a series of guests attached to the party for different arcs of the campaign, e.g. Robbie for the first 20 or so episodes (or however long this story arc ends up being), then someone else joining for the next segment of the campaign, etc. They don't have to go with the same guest model that they had in campaigns 1&2 with each guest only lasting for an episode or two.
Love this moment right around 3:45:00 where everyone is yelling Team Back Door and Matt's face glazes over as he considers the ramifications of this becoming campaign three's group name 🤣
It can't be a group name since there's also Team Front Door. The names can be used if they have to split up though. "Team Back Door (it has no crack) goes left while Team Front Door goes right."
Fearne is an absolute psychopath and I love it, she gives off that vibe of someone who will brutally murder people and smile at them as she does it, "we're here to kill you", "I think we should kill everybody", "let's turn him inside out" Ashley has really gotten to grips with how to play a Fey character and I love it! She's so chaotic, yet gentle but unnerving. Yeah you could say Laudna is a psycho too but honestly I think she's just weird and creepy maybe only slightly mad but Fearne comes across as a total psycho
Ashley definitely has the fairy/fairy adjacent vibe down pat for Fearne. The only off note is she's playing her with a very wicked unhinged Unseelie fey vibe but according to character backstory she has close ties to the Seelie Fey of the Summer Court. I mean, it's not totally unfeasible but it does hit my brain a little wonky.l
@@douglaspatrick868 as I understood it, the differences in courts arent that notable, one is just more likely to gut you than the other, but not by that much.
@@douglaspatrick868 I’m not sure someone who ‘wants her back’ is someone I would consider a close associate. Particularly because it’s pretty heavily implied that her parents abandoned her to run away from someone powerful.
One small detail: The music. There are ways in which this campaign is aiming to be different. So far it's... the atmosphere. The colors. Imogen's light purple hair. FCG's gold metalic body. Fearne's teal and aquamarine clothes. It feels like ... Campaign 2 had a vibe that could be painted with red, white and black colors. It was a very dramatic campaign, with lots of trauma, loss, love, tragedy. The Witcher 3 OST matched that story, and that atmosphere _perfectly._ I'm still acclimatizing to this new campaign, this weird new color palette so to say, both physically and emotionally. This soft music somehow fits into it and helps with getting on their vibe. Is it just me?
Oh it's not just confusion. Travis is a light touch when it comes to scary stuff. And right now he has only a special guest as buffer. It's going to be a rough campaign for him.
@@GirishManjunathMusic I think it has more to do with how they are treating C3 in regards to guest appearances. I'm speculating based on the "new storytellers" statement but I see it as more involved appearances compared to past one off deals. More people always increases time constraints and effort on the DMs part. Robbie is great but it's like a lot of crossover and involvement issues with great past guests. You can't actually get what you want in the D&D format. I wouldn't want to put that on Matt or compromise the campaign even for one extra person.
@@MorinehtarTheBlue hmm i have a theory, Robbie/Dorian will stay til they do what they were sent to do, find Oshad and then he will be sent to Keyleth as a messenger that the mission was done. Fearne and Orym will stay with the party and maybe Oshad Breshiu will actualy be Travises main PC after Bertrand leaves/dies. Or maybe i am absolutly off base. Who knows with these guys 🙂
Critical role talking about upcoming campaign 3: "We want to make it accessible to new viewers as well" Also Critical Role on the 2nd episode: "Let's all dress up as each other!" Love these guys.
Also Critical Role: Let's bring back 4 returning characters, 3 from Exandria and 1 from a one-shot. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Fearne and Bertrand, but I didn't get to watch any of Exandria Unlimited except Ep1 because I'm still catching up on S2, slowly, but I feel like I'm inherently missing something since I know half of the characters started elsewhere.
@@BerlinTrainStation1 You’re not. Bertrand hasn’t really changed, and they appear to be carefully avoiding referencing EXU in character. It might help you understand the characters, but there’s plenty of time for that, and they don’t, from what I’ve seen of EXU, behave or reveal anything you can’t infer from Campaign 3.
@@Loaderdani According to Matt's Twitter, EXU was really for them to test these characters out as concepts before they committed to a multi-year campaign with them. So, not required viewing to enjoy the new season
@@BerlinTrainStation1 As someone who watched Exandria Unlimited, i can tell you that other then one mention of the onther 2 characters at the begining of the firt episode of this campaing, there hasn't really been any references to it. And nothing that happened in EXU would really add any more info about who these characters are.
Honestly I think bertrand is my favorite character. Not often you find someone who is just deplorable, a compulsive liar, so hungry for the spotlight and pathetically craven but even so you can tell deep down that he is good. All the other characters are great but bertrand has the biggest opportunity for change and it'll be hard because he is most likely so set in his ways.
I loved Bertrand in The Search for Grog and I’m so happy to see him back! I love how all the other party members are just giving him shit though instead of just laughing it off and ignoring it as they did with their Vox Machina characters 😂
How did I not make this connection sooner. Charismatic, handsome and functionally useless; if that doesn't sum up both Bertrand and Lockhart perfectly, I don't know what does.
I honestly hope that he stays as Travis's character so Bertrand can actually be the hero he clearly wants to be rather than riding the Vox Machina coat tails from one mission from decades ago.
That moment when the cast improvised the creepy message stuff with Laudna has to be one of my favorite CR moments ever. It was so well done they’re so good at improv. Overall, Laudna and Fearn are definitely my favorites so far.
Right before the break starts, just about at 2:05:53 or so, Matt goes, “as the three of you mmm… HEAD around the outskirts…” and you can see him physically stop himself from saying “ make your way.” XD
@@loganomer7444 There’s a running gag whenever Matt says “making your way” or something similar for most if not all the players to start singing “Makin’ my way downtown!” from the song “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton. I think it was Sam or Ashley who started doing it sometime mid-Campaign-2, and now it’s become something of a compulsion for the entire table. By the end of last season it had become such a cliche gag that Sam started claiming he was only going to do it if he could work it into unexpected places (which he proceeded to do quite a lot), and you could tell that they were all genuinely trying to reign themselves in for the first couple episodes of Campaign 3, buuuuut… it’s sort of an unstoppable force now.
@@michaelsheridan6177 lol, based on the musical number before the first episode started, that makes sense. I’ve dm’d a handful of times and the very fragile balance of letting people goof around and trying to keep the game moving and keep immersion puts a bit of context into why mat would want to avoid that at all costs
@@loganomer7444 yes he does say it a fair amount. Though, I don't think to a point where it was obvious how often he said it until the joke began. (There is a lot of players making there way to places in this game, so it makes sense) There were a lot of musical phrases they latched onto in campaign 2. Very possibly a side effect of the time period that was played during, they may have been a bit stir crazy... from a retrospective POV, it seems that pattern picked up/came to an all time high several months into the pandemic. Edit: what I'm saying is, I do not recall that it began as a joke "at his expense" ... however, since it has lasted so long and comes up so regularly, it has turned into more of a "poking" at Matt thing than a fun musical interlude as it originally began

I’ve never heard Chaotic Good so perfectly encapsulated than in Taliesin’s comment: “Never take copper, that’s just kicking someone when they’re down. You take silver if they’re an asshole and you take gold regardless but you never take copper.’
Sounds like a code of honour... Which would be lawful good?

You might say she pickpocketed our hearts within 30 seconds of meeting her.

I look forward to all the shenanigans.
I don't mind Robbie it's just having an 8th means we might not get random extra characters on some shows
@@benjamin2629 yeah but robbie is just so great that i think im personally willing to make that sacrafice

The Marisha-Robbie dynamic was one I DID NOT know I needed in my life.

One line to describe fearne, “may I have a glass of milk and two shots of whiskey please?”
That's not even Fearne's (Direwolf) Final Form...
@@CarlosDiazCL you mean drag a corpse down an alley by its head at a full run? That Fearne?
The Witcher 3 OST matched that story, and that atmosphere _perfectly._
I'm still acclimatizing to this new campaign, this weird new color palette so to say, both physically and emotionally. This soft music somehow fits into it and helps with getting on their vibe. Is it just me?
"what happened when she was making this character?"
"A lot..."
While there's absolute absurdity going on a meter away. The genuine confusion is hilarious.
Oh it's not just confusion. Travis is a light touch when it comes to scary stuff. And right now he has only a special guest as buffer. It's going to be a rough campaign for him.
@@MorinehtarTheBlue I'm certainly _hoping_ Robbie is an MC now.
@@GirishManjunathMusic I think it has more to do with how they are treating C3 in regards to guest appearances.
I'm speculating based on the "new storytellers" statement but I see it as more involved appearances compared to past one off deals.

Robbie is great but it's like a lot of crossover and involvement issues with great past guests. You can't actually get what you want in the D&D format.
