I’m listening 👂 and my mouth remains open in one shock after another. Its difficult to get my head around That we have such abhorrent behavior by a. “State” we’ve all thought of differently and supported at one time or another.

BRILLIANT!!! As a Canadian, I have been exposed to the kind of textbooks she mentions applying strategies of racist discourse, regarding First Nations. The stories of history of Canada portrayed settlers as heroes and indigenous people as threats, cruel and inhuman. I grew up thankfully, and didn't have to join the army after high school to "police" occupied territories.
So many of those Israeli soldiers leave Israel after their military service in order to debrief from all they had to do. Especially the human rights abuses they had to perform "obeying orders."

Read the huge old study of American textbooks by Ruth Miller Elson, "Guardians of Tradition": the common point for 250 years+ has been to "make belief" in tradition's sanitized fables rather than really learn anything. You get a vastly incorrect road map from your school.

I believe that Israel, as currently constituted, isn't truly a nation-state of all Jews, but is an Ashkenazim ethno-state. It is a European/American colony/beach-head that has, geographically, split Arab and other indigenous cultures and civilizations apart.

Under apartheid, South Africa was a European ethno-state, despite the tiny minority of Europeans living there. Another factor is whether the dominant group is there to permanently settle the land. Let's not forget the progressive Jewish population inside Israel, many of whom do sterling work (individually and as part of NGOs) to advance human rights and social justice in their own country and in the Occupied Territories. Some also conduct very good and important research (e.g. the work done by B'Tselem and Ir Amim.)

Nurit Peled-Elhanan explains that the definition of Palestine in Israel is somewhat exaggerated and lacks much truth like those in maps and scholarly books. Palestine is somehow “absent” in statistics. Peled-Elhanan finds it disturbing and racist because the definition of a Palestinian revolves around terror versus Palestine as a people. Books with Palestinian point of view are banned, and it is therefore grounded.

However, I have seen literature produced by Palestinians for use in schools [some of them UNWRA schools] where Israel does not appear on the map and, worse still, Israelis are presented via antisemitic stereotypes of Jews.
It is a TWO-WAY street. Racism exists as much from the Palestinian educators as from the Israeli. These racist books exist in Israel but nowhere in the numbers suggested in this film. A very small minority of Israelis are extremists. Thus it is disappointing that Elhanan presents a one-sided binary perspective of a complex society and thereby falls into the 'us' and 'them' divisions.

Palestinians did not have their own school books, until after the publication of Nurit Peled-Elhanan's book, when some NGO provided the finance to print Palestinian schoolbooks. The textbooks used in Palestinian schools were Egyptian.
