I went looking for this video the year after I saw it and it was no longer up. I contacted the original poster and asked to have it back up. And here we are. I take a little credit for this!
When I was in high school, me and the rest of the Orchestra (I used the Cello) played this during our Christmas concert. One of our guys had an electric guitar and other band equipment, allowing us to play it exactly like the Trans-Siberian version. I swear every single one of us - though we did not speak of it; we just felt it- could feel the high paced emotion flying through as we played this. No pun intended, it was something magical. I wish we could do it all over again.
I'm a cellist too, and my orchestra is playing this during out winter concert. I also play the electric bass and we have many guitarists and bassists so hopefully it sounds as cool as the recording!
Carson Williams from Mason, OH originally did this amazing display of lights. The music was broadcast over a low FM frequency for nearby radios to pickup the audio. And like others have said, It is absolutely amazing that it is the official video for the song.
I think they refilmed it with a newer light display because a lot of the colors are different. But it’s definitely the same house. Edit: According to Wikipedia, TSO digitally remastered the original.
No other home Christmas light show has been able to beat this one. I'm still waiting every year for someone to top the lighting design, visuals, and the right song to match from this classic display.
There was one in my town that was massive. They waited all year to do it, and it was fantastic. Their property was a quarter of the block, and it was completely decked out, they even had a blown old penguin choir. I loved it. They haven’t done it for some years, and I miss it dearly. The only recorded footage is at the tail end of it. It’s called “Candycane Corner”, and it’s grainy footage from 12 years ago. They replaced the snow globe with the penguin choir, the snow globe was before my time.
Carson and I worked together in the 1990s. Very talented programmer/analyst. I found out fairly quickly after this video was first posted that he had programmed a lighting sequencer rig to do this (the local news in Cincinnati reported the story). I think this was his first major accomplishment at this, and it found its way to a beer commercial, and then got adopted by TSO as an official video for the song. He got work programming similar rigs for drive-through Christmas light displays in public parks after that. I wonder what he's up to these days...
Thank you for commenting this -- it's so cool to find out that this was done in my hometown of all places! I went and looked this up on Wikipedia, and sure enough, this was recorded in Mason, Ohio! Your friend Carson has a Wikipedia page too; he seems to be doing well, and even got contracted by the Denver airport to run a show like this for them on a commercial scale! Wonder if he'd be willing to do something like this for the Cincy Zoo's Festival of Lights...
It's a shame the original video isn't still up. I think it was 2006, it was a huge "viral" hit at the time...but "huge" meant something else back then and people hadn't started calling things "viral" :) I guess the old video went away when this became the official video /shrug
What made this one so much more successful than all of the others that followed it is that he gradually revealed each element in this display as the song progressed. First the "Holiday" sign and the candy canes, then the little trees, the the wreaths, then the big tree, then the surrounding lights. They're all there, but you don't see them until the song progresses more and... "Oh, there's another thing. Oh, there's another one!" Many of the "imitators" failed to realize the beauty of the gradual reveal and put ALL of their lights on display ALL at once, and then just had them blink in time to the music.
The gradual reveal also makes the ending all the more special, where the whole house is illuminated by every light coming on at once as the song crescendos. Carson Williams put so much thought, time and hard work into this show, and no one has been able to perfectly replicate it since.
Somehow, I have a rememory of getting a copy of the light-o-rama script file and just being in awe of it. Also, back when 480 was all we had of this, that was how I learned about Happy Holidays being the phrase.
Just brutal that ads inviting me to click over to watch more from Trans-Siberian and something else, block half the screen for the last 30 seconds, just when the pyrotechnics and the music are building to a climax and there is no way to remove them. It's a shame because I was showing it to someone because I remember it from '04 and it is insanely good! The ads ruined it for me and I'm sure many others feel the same.
My grandfather showed me this three days after it was uploaded. I was living in florida with him at the time. He called me and my older sister over to the computer desk to show us this, I fell in love. It's hard to believe that was ten years ago, six years old and now fifteen, Still love this!

I remember watching it in 2006 too! I was 4, and I think I called it "the Haunted House Song" even though the house doesn't look old or Victorian at all.
This is so insane. I remember seeing this decades ago with the grainy version that was around in those days of video sharing. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought there was a HD version. Old memories have been unlocked.

2023 - Thank you, TSO, for so many great memories.
so classic. I listened to this so much as a kid.
These lights r Awesome and I love this music
i believe this was some fun an electrical engineer in Mason Ohio was having that year and being from north Ohio ive always referred back to this persons legendary contributuon to the christmas season! Thanks again whoever you are!
Makes for happy times when are bad...
I watched this video for the first time around 2006 and now 15 years later for the past two years I've run a Christmas light show on my house. I am planning on entering the field of lighting/show design because of this video and what it has inspired. Thank you.
I remember watching it in 2006 too! I was 4, and I think I called it "the Haunted House Song" even though the house doesn't look old or Victorian at all.
Still watching June 30, 2014!
2:45 - the video end cards have ruined the best part
It sucks really. Watch this and fellow these steps and it will never bother you again NEVER! ua-cam.com/video/bqSynG7NL9M/v-deo.html
This is ART. The amount of synchronization is incredible!
The fact they played this song at the Great Escape Lodge during Christmas with moving spotlights created a masterpiece.
No house today with lights like this will ever match the energy this one has.
Quem está assistindo em 2016 deixa uma curtida aí.
This is so insane. I remember seeing this decades ago with the grainy version that was around in those days of video sharing. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought there was a HD version. Old memories have been unlocked.
I want to know how the person in that house managed to have the lights do that and who is even filming
I remember this was one of the coolest viral videos back in the day. Watched it on my Dell PDA so many times. 😅
The original and while some are so much more complex today, this will always be the champ
I remember my teacher showing us this like a decade ago in elementary school. And I’ll always thank her cause every year I will always come back to this🤍
I have loved this for years. Every Christmas period I find it and watch and enjoy! Someone else mentioned that It never gets old . I have to agree. I think it is brilliant!
Just ran across this song in a music stream feed and thought, "I wonder if the house Christmas light show featuring this song is still on UA-cam?" YESSS! And yes, it was the song that got me interested in Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Growing up I never got the chance to see anything like this, only in video
Ich kenne es, seit es erschienen ist und liebe es für immer, und möchte dem Künstler und Orchester die Füße küssen. Bei jedem Mal Ansehen das gleich Glücksgefühl :D
That's incredible. It's a perfect mix of rock and christmas music. I love it.
