I hate how vocaloid songs are often the saddest yet truest expressions of human nature. This is how society is, and it makes me sad to see how accurately people's suffering is portrayed. Why is it that none of these songs have happy endings? Its just how the world is, and the song makes no attempt to hide this, unlike people today.
Julianna Kim that's deep bro :0 but true and it's just kinda ironic hearing it from a virtual being .u.
Some people will never understand how powerful this song is.
"Everyone understands that we're selfish. What values? So, shut your mouth. I don't know anymore"
I think these were the most powerful lines of the song, because it's where the creator shows that he/she is doubting the necessity of his work. It's mocking itself and what we are all probably doing right now - passively agreeing with its meaning. Yes, everyone knows the ugly truth of the human condition deep down, and we agree to steal a quick glance at it when it becomes socially acceptable, such as now for instance. But very few people actually confront this truth at every moment in their lives, which makes sense - it would be soul-destroying to do that. You could think, in a way - what's the point of this depressing song when we're all going to choose to forget it?
I've always hated the excuse "Only human," aren't we all? That is an excuse used by mainly our superiors who expect nothing but the best out of you but try to excuse themselves as if suddenly they're on the same level as you. Stating the obvious of your biological self doesn't excuse the fact that you screwed up and/or hurt someone.
I think it means that they're pointing out that they, like all humans, screwed up. Everyone's done it, and they're just admitting that they didn't mean it.
Amber Blare I know what it means, I still think it's a lousy excuse. You can not mean it all you want it still doesn't give you the right to immediately excuse yourself by saying 'I'm only human'. Instead they should apologize and try to do better.
That's true, and I agree that they shouldn't use it to excuse a serious mistake. I've only heard it in joking context.
I've always heard it used by adults towards children. I guess it depends on how we hear it...
Personally I think this song is trying to tell us we're hypocrites. All of us. We say things like "humans are different" but really our interests and needs are still the same. We still crave for love, romance, friendship, success and so on. But when they become inconvenient and troublesome, we'll "throw" them (aka our friends and others) in the dumpster and gives reason like 'We're only humans. We can't be perfect' We act like we understand each other during those times, but we really don't. It's a pathetic excuse really. We have no idea how each of us feel. Besides being selfish, humans are p greedy. We've already got stuffs that fulfill our necessity, but we still want more. More money, more power, more love, and so on. We're so blinded by our goals we ended up forgetting what we already have. When we realized our goals can't be accomplished, we are then forced to look back and realize what we have is actually a lot. It's more than enough. Only then we learn to be grateful, just like the line "You're the only thing I have" In my opinion, the guy's too idealistic. He thinks the world is too nice and gentle, but that's far from the truth. We should be more realistic and realize we are 'only' humans, after all.
That explains Irony-chan. Both pretty much have the same meanings deep down xD
So, to everyone who's looking for a theory right now, here's my theory:
Let's start with the boy, the main character of this song and the "Clean Freak".
In his song, he explains his view of life and humanity.
He tells which "lies" and "opinions" people give, like: "We're all different" and "I don't have anybody than you!"
The boy only sees the "bad things" of humanity and so every human and every human action becomes "useless".
The boy himself is a loner. Because of his dislike against the human race, he doesn't have any friends and he doesn't want some ("Don't touch me!").
The paper balls are representing people, or peoples action who are nice to him, or even want to become friends with him (paper is mostly white and could represent a new beginning, because of the possibilities you can do with it, like drawing, writing or origami).
But the boy can't see the differences of "useless" people, so he "cleans" the "garbage" aka ignoring or even rejecting the affection of others.
But time continues and how harder he tries to "be clean" (lonely) the "garbage" (human affection and how they try to help him) grows.
Nearly suffocating by all the "garbage", he tries to flee by finding the "real meaning of life and/or friendship", but always thinks at the "bad" characteristics of people.
He starts to seek and study even harder, when he's realizing what he's doing ("Wait, don't push yourself!", there is no one who'd say that). Starting to overthink the whole situation, he decides that it's already to late for him, because he loves "cleanliness" too much (being lonley) and so he throws his last familiarity away.
The blue paper ball (the last familiarity) represents somebody who's really close to the boy, but is never seen more then a blue figure, that only distinguish by the colour and the not-having of a flower head. He or she, follows the main character through the entire video, who pretend to "not to see him/her".
It could also represent his inner being, which suffocats of being so lonely.
The end could mean that the boy will stay lonely, or that he will "clean" himself.
Oh sad songs.
Why am I so attracted to you?
Yet another pretty song with a rather depressing meaning.
But to be honest the most tragic thing is that it is absolutely true.
Eris ђคץครђเ I like them because they are usually realistic, as happy songs seem to be more idealistic. To me. Please don't kill me for an opinion...
+LilyCelbi I don't hate people for their opinion since we all have our own, but I completely agree with you.
"That's right, we're always poisoned with greed. We quickly get tired of what we obtain and throw it out, and then we quickly find our next toy, and say 'I don't have anyone but you' " Those words hit HARD. :(
''We're pretty useless, the human race.'' The painful truth.
AiSherryChan Mhm. If we all disappeared, the world would become healthier. No more CO2 emissions destroying the atmosphere, not as much ocean pollution...our world would do much better without us.
AiSherryChan Then go out there and actually make a difference. Don't be that useless human being. We may be driven by our instincts, but we got one thing that separates us from animals. Our minds. Our ability to decide for ourselves. Throwing ourselves against a wall and saying we shouldn't be here isn't going to help anything. Not trying to be Shia here, but seriously dude. If you want change, then make it.
We are weak I mean that there is so much more animals and stuff we kill to obtain food and stuff, we may seem kind but we still in the end are self fish. The same desires of love, friendship, success and stuff. If people were truely different why is it we feel similar emotions well I hope this didn't sadden anyone (I am self fish after all too)
So.......
Stick I love stick but then I realized it was a mistick.....lol

The four groups of this song:
The people who admire the song/video.
The people who think it's an Attack on Titan joke.
The people who understand and fully believe in the song, feeling like the boy in it.
The people who understand, but not believe in, the song, and try to be the girl reaching out.
+Kyon Facepalms I'm either 4, or 5, the one who understands, but wants to ignore the meaning because the person wants to stay happy.
*le sigh* While this song is called "Clean Freak" I don't like seeing all of the comments about Levi from Attack on Titan. This is more about how terrible the human race is with everyone's selfish desires.
***** Yes! I'm an otaku as well, but I always try to find the meaning of the song before typing something stupid. To be honest, I wasn't even thinking of Levi before I clicked onto the song. I just checked the comments and I nearly threw my computer across the room.
I'm glad someone agrees with me.
Levi doesn't have much faith in the human race either, though he fights to protect it (to my knowledge). However the kind of "filth" depicted in this song has nothing to do with Levi dressing up as a maid to clean!
*GASP* Someone agrees! I was so irritated by those comments. Look at the true meaning of the song and its obvious this has nothing to do with Levi. Enjoy the song for what it really is about, and not the fact that the song title has the world "Clean" in it.
You are so right. Even though I absolutely love Attack on Titan, I wasn't even thinking about Levi when I saw this song. The first thought in my head was "is this a song about someone who can't stand dirty things" but never once did Levi go into my head. And when I read the comments I was just thinking "you're joking right." But I really do love the meaning behind this song, even if it's sad.
I do understand the meaning of this song but this song can be relatable to Levi.
I’m SUPER late, so If someone’s read this, hey! I used to love this song so much when I was younger. I mean, I’m fourteen now, but when I was like eleven or twelve, I felt so connected to this song. But now, I don’t know. I agree with the lyrics, but I think you can see it in so many other ways. Humans are really flawed, but is it really our fault? We didn’t choose to be born, we didn’t choose how to grow up, it’s all been forced on all of us. And I always feel like there’s so much little stuff that are pure and wonderful. Yeah, at the end everything is for ourselves, but it’s not always a bad thing. Helping others gives us happiness to, isn’t it just so beautiful? I don’t know, I’m trying to make sense. Society is not perfect, and it’s never gonna be, but we can be the best version of ourselves. I’m not really the one to talk! I still understand this song, because I’m so confused by other people, sometimes I feel like an alien, but I genuinely believe that it’s supposed to be this way. We’re all pretending we understand, but we don’t, we’re just confused little aliens who happened to walk on this planet. It’s our choice on how to be. ((BYW Eng is not my first language so I’m sorry for mistakes...)
Even after nine years UA-cam remembers that I watched this, had the miniature progress bar under the thumbnail and everything
A year has passed, yet I'm still here, listening to this song. Because nothing changed in society.
i can't believe i just learned avogado was the one to illustrate this pv
I knew their artstyle seemed familiar!!
WAIT THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE HOW HAVE I NEVER REALIZED ALL THESE YEARS
I like how this can talk about so many argued problems with such little words and yet still beautifully respect them by being able to get them across accurately.

People who dream to hope are deemed as idealistic and naive. People who gave up on it are accepted and sympathized. Why is it that when we grow older, we are made suffer these changes in reality? In fact, why do others become this way I wonder? I ask this every now and then.
*****, Kaibutsu M Well, there is a defined difference between knowledgeable and wise. Wisdom enables you to think and make decisions and have that capability of seeing life in its meaning if not, being able to observe what is happening before you and reflect upon it. Knowledge is where you understand facts and principles of the physical structure of the world and not the internal side of it. ^(*w*)^ It's a nice conversation you guys have in there.
In my opinion, people who understand the mental side of the world are better than people who understand the physical side. Because those who can understand what's just beneath the skin will make it farther. Those who hold on to their dreams are the ones that will make it to them. Those who hope are the ones that can help us.im always in the clouds, and am always imagining things that will never happen, but maybe that will make happier than those who just look at the cruel reality. I just went way off topic didn't i. I'm no good at physcalogical conversations, but I'll keep trying.
Hello and good-bye I understand every bit you just said. It is only sad that those who are faced with adversary or conflict would often choose to give up the fight to dream and hope for a better future and would say: "This is reality". In my opinion, I think that we must learn to accept the reality before us, but it does not mean that we must give up to hope. Like a road, we would have to see the surroundings as well as looking forward towards the destination. Well, that's my philosophy anyway.
I know what you mean. I can see reality, but I can also see the potential. If humans have the capacity to be evil and cruel, then can't they also be kind and caring. Even though the world is a cruel and dishonest place, I believe that one day, wheather it happens tomarrow or in a million years, humans can make a turn for the better. Of course something bad is probobly gonna happen before we realize our mistake. There are still so many people who hope and dream for a brighter future, but it seems reality just keeps saying "hey, get your head out of those clouds." And when it does, it sends us a shock. And when that happens, a lot of people give up. But there are still some who refuse to give up. And then there are some people who just look around and say "what's going on?" Those are the people who are naive. People say that I'm really naive, because I don't seem to understand reality, but I think I just haven't been hit with anything strong enough to give up. Do you understand what I'm saying, or are you just wondering "what is this girl talking about?" Did I misunderstand your point? Did I go to off topic? I really doubt myself sometimes, especially in deep conversations.
Hello and good-bye Well, I do know exactly what it is you are talking about. And no, you haven't been off-topic. All I can say to that is that we pause, listen, and then respond to whatever problems there are that binds our troubles.
This is a deep song and all I see are comments about Levi fcking Ackerman.
When I hear this producer's songs, I feel like giving him a big hug.
I understand what he's trying to say(I've been there, personal experience speaking), but its best to not think of these things about life and humans, y'know? It's way too much a burden for a single person to bear. Ugh, now I feel like hugging everyone who thinks this way.
>~< ikr. So many people just need one big giant huggle...in a great big huggle circle... Like the great big dango family! = =; wait... Somehow I feel like Iv'e said something weird here.. I can't tell what tho so Imma post this comment anyways~ //goes back to pile of homework listening to this song over and over just 'cause its so well thought out//
"Wait, don't push yourself."
I really like this statement. I think we're all desperate to succeed in life and forget to take it slow sometimes. I'm gonna start saying this to people when I see they're in need of a shoulder.
one of my fav vocaloid songs of all time... found this about three years ago and i still listen often when I’m sad or happy. great for when I hate the world and relate to the lyrics, still a good bop otherwise. i hope someday scop will release songs again, he really wrote ones that i could relate to such as crier and well.. this one. anyways just wanna say i will always love this song
i guess the fact that I keep coming back to this song after all these years shows how close it hit to home
OK, so here's what I think all the analogies are...
The blue character always appearing and usually smiling before the lyrics "I'd rather cry it all out" is his emotional state. Notice how progressively throughout the song the character's emotions drift further and further away from pleasant feelings.
But him throwing away the blue piece of paper signifies how desperately he wants to get away from his emotions.
The fact that the paper is blue suggests that, even though he doesn't want to be, he's already been dyed or hurt. Throwing the paper away would be his coping method with handling his emotions.
The main character himself though is what everyone actually sees in the real world. Cold, distant, indifferent, why? Because he's depressed. He disconnected himself from his own emotions to try and numb the pain, that's why the train scene is so dramatic.
"Slowly being dyed in a dirty color" and "don't get any closer to me" suggest that the way this 'color', or hurt emotions, is spread is through talking and interesting with others. He's scared to be 'dyed a gross color' (hurt) so he's also distanced himself from society.
Pretty soon towards the end, though, he does begin to cry because the world had become too much for him. He ends up closing his eyes and saying "I don't wanna see anything anymore" because that's his way of saying 'I'm going to kill myself'.
RANDOM THOUGHT
What if all the other pieces of paper were everyone else's emotions, thoughts, ideals and empathy??? O.O
Since the beginning he expresses extremely pessimistic opinions. Well actually the paper being other's emotions actually makes the character really unlikable as he himself is throwing those people's emotions away. The song has a really "as a matter of fact, my opinion is correct" connotation to it, although he is venting out his depression, but he generalizes all people. This is why I kind of don't like this song and am starting to hate the message it delivers: "Humans are bad, they just pretend to understand each other but they all only care about themselves". Which is extremely toxic. I really hate the mentality of hope being deemed naive and immature, it's more toxic than people's greed.
Well i think the lyrics are told from more of a biased point of view like from someone who's been hurt over and over as opposed to what the truth really is. That's how i think of it at least; from the point of view of someone who's misunderstood and doesn't understand. I think the character thinks that if the human population wasn't so vast that everyone would be happier.
Typically Japanese songs are told from one person's point of view
Holly Dafler Typically most songs are told from a first point of view, the lyrics and the video don't show him being hurt until a little later where people call him out on being so pessimistic, it seems as the beginning shows him not being able to understand being human and is angry at the world because of it. It seems as if he's pushing all his faults on the whole population, like pretending to understand people and being a hypocrite.
Yes, i agree. To put it simply, i believe the song to be about a boy who simply doesn't understand.
I apologize for some of the things that may have sounded or of place in my original comment, i forget to differentiate between the facts I'm given vs. The things i fill in myself
Holly Dafler Yeah, that's kind of what I interpret this song's theme to be."I apologize for some of the things that may have sounded or of place in my original comment, i forget to differentiate between the facts I'm given vs. The things i fill in myself " What you did wasn't really bad but just don't try to fill in gaps with stuff that's not from the original source. I apologize for shitting on the English language in my first reply: ", although he is venting out his depression, but he generalizes all people."
^The fuck's this shit?
i knew i shouldn't have looked at the comments section
Yeah we suck
I'm happy to come back to this song ❤ i miss in my life so much

This world is.. filled with disgusting things..
**pulls out a death note**
time to clean it up~
+civmonger20 well that death angel thingy doll said there is no after-life so go for it
Guess I had a depressing childhood since this were the type of music that I listened to, well I'm not saying it's a bad thing, infact I'm glad that my perspective around the world changed at a very young age and it prepared me for what's going on with my life as an adult.
My interpretation: A kid with OCD gets bullied a lot at school. He's always been a clean freak, and he wants to clean up the selfishness and ignorance of the human race, too. At the end, when we realizes he cant do that, he basically throws out that emotion. That's what the blue version of himself represents. I think it most likely represents depression.. He covers up his emotions and keeps on living. When it says 'I don't want to see anything anymore' I think it means he was thinking about suicide. Im not sure if he would of actually went through with it or not. So yeah..... that's what I think. Please comment what you think!
Also, at 3:10, he was unsuccessful in throwing out his feelings because he just couldn't take it.
Well, this would work, but however the OCD part doesn't make sense.
People with OCD are NOT clean freaks or total perfectionists.
Maryanna Well, OK, look... I'm not here to start a commenting war... I have OCD, but I am most certainly NOT a clean freak or perfectionist. HOWEVER, they are symptoms of OCD (or rather, they can be). Everybody's OCD symptoms are different based on environmental and genetic factors. So Kat Ate Fish (How do I tag people on UA-cam comments?) does have a legitimate statement. Her theory certainly works based of evidence we were given in the video of this boy's personality. :D
HOLY SHIT THIS IS SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL IN ALL DEFINITIONS OF THE WORD I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS
Moral of the story: We're all trash XP
Oh my god yessss this video is back on UA-cam :) I remember being sad when I visited my old playlists and it was unavailable
It's strange to see a video that has everything i want to express. I wonder what the creator is like
everyone in the comments not taking this seriously makes me sick
stop comparing this to unrelated things
and stop insulting the kid in the song
just stop in general
*Feels my chest tighten.*
The feels are too strong in this song.
avogado was the perfect artist to illustrate this song
it seems like every old song I go to to reminisce on childhood memories, popular or not, avogado was there to illustrate it...
Finally, a song with a meaning
No matter what anyone says, I think the art in this is really cute..
wow i actually feel quite related hearing to this song
The world's problems are too big for one person to think about. Sometimes, even if one wants to solve it, they can't, and it makes them feel overwhelmed and helpless. So they decide that turning their backs and giving up on the problem is easier. They start thinking it's unsolvable, hopeless, and that they can't do anything about it.
And that's exactly what he did. He has too many ideals for society that are far from being realized, thus being a "neat freak". So he felt hopeless and turned his back on hope for humanity. Instead of picking up the broom and sweeping the floor, he just grumbled on the corner of his room.
...is what I got from the song. Maybe I misunderstood something lol.
this is no longer a song...this is art! *sniff*
the lyrics and meaning are so powerful ;Q;
indeed, the human race is pretty useless
"wait. don't push yourself". There's no one who'd say that...
The truth of this is what makes the message so stunningly beautiful.
This song could be the OP of Clean Freak Aoyama-kun.
It's beend 2 years since I first heard this song, still my favorite.
This song is honestly so beautiful
Wow, this line totally got to me: "The truth is, we're mistaking satisfaction for love."
Sort of just hit me and made me realize that that could be true in many levels... Loving this song and my favourite Vocaloid, Gumi, never ceases to amaze me.
Well,Scop made it.
In Italian "scopa" is "broom".
And brooms are used for cleaning.
This song... Has a lot of truth to it, I'll say that. But the thing is that it's bad to get caught up in all this. Sure, the human race may be dirty... But if we were all clean, then what would we be? If we were all perfect, then What would there be to live for? If we had no bad emotions at all, then how could we be happy? There has to be a balance between "clean" and "dirty".
I saw a lot of people taking about animals in the comments. And I suppose my view on this is that the more emotions and ideas your race develops, the dirtier they are as well. I'm not saying that animals don't have emotions (Dolphins and Elephants are pretty smart), I'm just saying that the more emotions you have, the dirtier and less innocent you are. So this doesn't just apply to humans but to all life. Don't view humans as being smarter and better than everything else just because we manipulate and control animals. It isn't fair to hold humans above everything else (And even animals aren't all that innocent).
Bottom line is, nothing can be perfect. Nothing can be perfectly "clean". You have to try to be as clean as you can, but don't get too obsessed with it. You have to accept the fact that it can't all be perfect (And this is coming from a perfectionist).
Sorry for the long comment... I just wanted to put this out there.
Thank u one of the few comments that isnt edge written. While there are dirty things in this world that doesnt overwrite moments of kindness in living and we are animals in the end...we arent gods :(
i've been looking for this song for so long damn i can't relate to it as much as i used to but the melody is still so soothing to me, i'm glad i found it again
This sub is so good! Thank you i had problems understanding some parts before but now it's all clean to me
I like how Gumi songs often relates to personal dillema... I love em
WOW. This music video is AWESOME. And this song deals with the deep things that most people choose to ignore or hide from.
*listens to music that is popular in my generation*
blah blah blah asses blah blah blah hot girls blah blah blah having sex~
Nope.
This is why we listen to vocaloid, people.
bepbolbop s
Before listening to Vocaloid I was ignorant about my surroundings and the people around me but after listening to Vocaloid I can say that the way I look at life has changed a lot.
All things aside, the animations are beautiful and crazy awesome. It looks really crisp, and the smooth transitions are telling the story in an ever-moving pattern. If I could have the skills and the inspirations to animate this kind of stuff. Kudos to the peeps who make this song happen.
I thought this song was blocked for so long but its back and i really loved this song and still do probably even more now bc my depression is way worse then when i put this in my playlist a few years ago
Years later, this song speaks more to our current society.

The amount of times I saw "Oh this reminds me of levi" OMG it makes me wanna buy a gun just for the sake of shooting myself XD but all jokes aside this song is awesome af
I just got a real grim reminder about the disgusting things some humans do as I ended up in a crappy corner of the internet, and that feeling really reminded me of how I used to feel when listening to this song. I have matured and became a much more positive as the years have went by, but sometimes I come across such shitty things the old feeling creeps back to me. I guess it's good to get reminded about both sides from time to time to stay realistic
This gives me chills. The song is so relatable, so well written, and so beautiful, words can't possibly express my love for it.
My Favorite Vocaloid song :3

Sometimes vocaloid songs with a sense of reality are just so powerful that sometimes it serves as a really big eye opener for most people.
Is it me or does the guy look a bit like the guy from The Lost One's Weeping?
OMG THIS SONG WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!!
What a beautiful PV and song by Gumi!

You're unique and very clever comment about Levi will completely stand out in this specific comment section, thus getting you quickly a lot of likes, and getting top comment.
(I actually really love Levi :3)
so he died because of the garbage or he died by taking out the garage.....
i like how the boy was becoming a hypocrite and by the end of the song, he just gives up on trying to point out humanity's mistakes, because in the end, he's human. he's the same as the people he hates, therefore he ends up hating himself. it's like something you can find in algebra, really: if a=c and b=c, then a=b. if me=human and hypocrite=human, then me=hypocrite.
i am speechless 0.0 this song is amazing 0.0
This song has been a comfort to me for years, even before I was diagnosed with OCD. It's nice to know somebody understands.
I sing the chorus to this song on repeat when I browse Tumblr half of the time
Basically a song about the ugly nature of humans. "Everyone is different they say, but our values and pleasures are the same," probably trying to mean that sometimes when you suck in something (A) but good in something else (B), people say it's okay cause everyone's different. But still, you are going to be labelled inferior cause majority ia good in A and your B strength is useless to the world. (well, this is something I can relate to. At times, people would say woah, you are good at this but they dont associate with you that often - cause you are not good in what most of them do?)
Whoa. Woahowahwhoa. I really liked what the lyrics were saying and what they meant. Like a lot. Man, this was nice.
I love Vocaloids they sing, funny songs, & upbeat songs, But they can also do meaningful songs that tell a story.
(:
To me, it feels like the song is about autism. As an autistic adult, the world just feels like this a lot. Growing up autistic, we try our best to understand the people around us, but they never make any sense. So we try to fit into this world that everyone else has shaped based on their ideals that make no sense to us. It feels hollow. Meaningless. And we just want someone else to understand. We feel so alone. Now that I'm an adult, I've been able to find friends who are also on the spectrum, and share similar experiences. But as a child, I just felt so alone in a world that made sense to everyone except for me. Might be projecting, but whatever. Everyone else here is too. Maybe this will resonate with someone.
No, I totally get you. I feel exactly the same. Especially as someone who listened to this song as an autistic child and who has now grown into an autistic adult, I feel like each time I come back I find a new layer of personal meaning. In particular the part about wanting a textbook, so often I want one not just for social interactions, but just how to exist as a human. It feels like there are so many rules to just being alive that I can't get right. Thank you for your comment.
a masterpiece indeed. paradox of the truth.
I really like the context of this song!
I love vocaloid songs like this and hit the deeper stuff in a way that everyone can understand and express their thoughts on it. I like how it creates discussion.
This isn't a song... it's poetry.
