    Fabulous machinery Gerry. I have been looking at a identical mower to your small one with intent to use it for topping as well as mowing.. would topping with a conditioner mower be a wise move..?????

    • @gerry6420

      james o neill yes another guy from cork bought it who follows me on here. He was going to mow his own silage with it. It was a good mower. I top every year. Anywhere grass gets away in grazing and can be stemmy it’s a good job to top it. Give you nice fresh regrowth

    • @gerry6420

      Either change our large silage trailer to a 14/16 ton, get a dribble bar for our slurry tanker or change our 6420 for a 6155r..... one of those 3 things.... cattle prices would need to change though.

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  3 роки тому

      No not at all. If you were a dairy farmer cutting lighter crops and plenty tractors drawing you could lift 50-60 acres a day, maybe more .... I lifted 40 acres in a day.

    • @gerry6420

    does it add up?

    • @michealodonovan95
      @michealodonovan95 4 роки тому

      Wouldn't think so between cost, depreciation, time to do the work I would say alot of it wouldn't be worth it. Only advantage is doing a job when you want but is it worth its costs

    • @gerry6420
      @gerry6420  4 роки тому +3

      bill carroll yes and no..... deprecation of machinery isn’t too bad on most stuff.... keeping stuff good pays. For example.... bought new amazone Fertiliser spreader in 2004 €4500.....sold it 2018 for 3000€. Our last mower bought in 2009 for 4900k sold in 2019 for 3500€.... silage harvester cost 4800€ when we had it up and running.... so lay out on those machines have been small and payed for them selfs easily. Sprayer and the new mower are long term investments and will do us a life time. But cutting our own silage.... 100 acres roughly a year, contractor would be in the region of 10k. Costs us around 3500 with desiel and pay a man to draw. In 4 years the saving on silage will pay for the mower. Not counting that mower also cuts 50 acres of hay and 25/30 acres of round bales. Tractors havnt deprecated that much. 6420 cost 52k in 2004.... today it’s worth 30k in the condition it’s in. €1300 loss a year..... 6930 58k in 2014. Today what’s a 6930 with 4400hr in that nick worth. €50k. Telehandler cost 32k in 2007.... still worh 25k at least. Seen one make 27k last year. We slurry all through the slurry season. 100€ diesel will slurry all day. Contractor is 40€ an hour. Savings in there when you have the machinery. As I said looking after it and keeping its value up is key.a lot of our stuff is bought second hand, in good condition, and kept for a long period. If you decide to quit or sell stuff you have good chance of selling close to what you paid. The new mower and sprayer are the exception. We will feel the full deprivation of those. Even though acre count will be small on both compared to most bought new..... other side of it is if we paid a contractor to do everything we do and had no machinery we probably wouldn’t be in business.
