Colin, that was no rant. That was the foundational blueprint for an emergence of a "Middle Party" we so desperately need.
I think your country needs a party made up of both liberals and conservatives with people inbetween as well.
Really enjoy your content. Been following you for years and as a moderately left libertarian I share many of the same views as you. But I do disagree with you on many things as well. However, I respect your opinions and remain open to them because you conduct yourself in a respectful and thoughtful manner. We need more people like you in office. Would love to see you run one day.
Put fireside chats on UA-cam! Also, thanks again for the great content sir!!
+1 agreed. Soundcloud is going to go under at some point. It wouldnt hurt to publish to multiple channels. Just create a new channel for it if you want to keep them separate.
Shoxty it's times like these I wonder if we're losing another great library of content. I hope someone has backed up everything & not just what they think is worthy..
I agree. UA-cam has a lot of potential viewers too. Soundcloud has a much smaller audience which makes it harder to grow.
Agreed, please consider this Colin :).
I second this also! I know I'm not the only one with Red ( ▀ ͜͞ʖ▀)
Atleast your rants are cohesive and thoughtful.
More please.
Completely ignored the corporate and wealthy interests that plague our government and our representation.
I agree 100%, I feel like pride is our biggest obstacle into ACTUALLY getting shit done lol.
Hey also, I just listened to your latest podcast that was patreon exclusive about the "sugar baby." That is world class journalism, man. I really love how you are the same guy bringing gaming content and real discussion from the political middle.
The only path to progress in this matter is for all sides to admit to themselves the posibility that they could be wrong and that a win for others is not always a loss for self.
Yeahhhh new episode !!
Partisanship is the most frustrating thing about this all. What would be nice is if there was a way to remove any and all names from the bills, submitted anonymously and then voted on in private and announced so every representative, congressman, and senator, is kept as an individual in their vote, nothing but the merit of the bill is to be voted on (no names or party support attached) and the people know what they voted for. Sure, it might take longer to get things perfected and passed, but it's better than getting nothing passed based on partisanship.
This is so true! While I am Canadian, I do live in a border city, so American politics are very meaningful to me, especially in their current divided state. Great work as always Colin! Can’t wait to hear your PSX coverage next week!
We definitely need to hear more of these Colin, it's great to hear you strong opinions flushed out in full to open up a debate (I also happen to agree with almost all of them). Keep up the great work. Will you be doing another historical episode any time soon?
My favorite episode of CLS so far. Would love to see more rants sprinkled in amongst the rest of the videos. :)
It's rants like these that bring me right back to you Colin, keep up the good work
I've never liked the idea of partisanship. It turns the idea of government into a competition, when in reality it should be a cooperation. It should be a group of people with widely different viewpoints on issues, all working together to make the country a better place for everyone.
I've mentioned this to you quite a few times but the second the military gets a budget cut, all these bases will stay open while salaries and benefits get shit on, as well as opportunities to train like we fight and maintain, which is critical to our success. We've seen it countless times before. Half the planes we have cannot fly, and half of the planes that can fly have no pilots. We have a lot of problems that cutting the budget will only worsen. What we need to do is stop spending the budget we have on things we don't need, because we are really hurting in areas that need attention.
Great job on this Colin! Thank you so much! I wish everyone could hear this information because there's so many of us saying it but I often just feel like I'm either preaching to the choir or to the ignorant who don't WANT to see reality. We can't just keep pushing the problems off till tomorrow
10:27 "We don't need to talk about medicare for all or other universal healthcare schemes to get to the bottom of fixing our deeply flawed system. It's imperative we do something about this" And just like the Republicans, you dismiss the only solution that is currently being discussed.
Took a break from UA-cam, this show makes me glad I'm back
Great episode, good points. Money is the main reason for these issues. It's one of the reasons I disagreed with your conclusion that Bernie Sanders was bad for the US. One major thing kept me respectful of the Sanders camp - his crusade against oligarchy. There wasn't a speech where he didn't mention how our politicians are bought and paid for, rendering our votes moot. Citizens United has to go, campaign finance reform needs to happen. No other major party candidate placed such a policy emphasis on getting money out of politics. Politicians can make whatever false promises they want to us to get elected, they are beholden to their financiers. Let those financiers be the US people.
I have plenty of issues with Sanders economic policies, but bringing these issues to the forefront alone made him at the very least good for highlighting a major issue that no other players are talking about (including Trump) because they're all playing the same corrupt money game - and we're just spectators under the illusion we have a say in what's going on.
Hey Colin, I am Canadian and I agree with what you have said here. One thing to consider is that it is not just the political system in the US that is causing this bipartisanship. It is you as well, and by that I mean the media.
I have a bit of an outside perspective on this one, and by no means is our media perfect. I just see that compared to our media, much of traditional tv and online coverage is very harsh and has an undercurrent of bias. Weather one side is worse than the other is up for debate. This is no way to open dialog. The fastest was to shut someone down and have them dig in there heels is to attack them.
How to solve it? Cover the facts, argue ideas and policies, not people. Try not to make it personal. The attitude of wanting to constantly win an argument and make the other side look stupid is way to pervasive.
Is the media a reflection of politics or the other way around? Might be something interesting for you to explore on another topic.
Every American should listen to this.
GREED is at the root of our problems. Whether it's for money, power or fame greed has eroded the will of our leaders to do what is right and just.
7:02 I'm not on food stamps but as a college grad, I've worked enough hours in Wal-mart and other places during my studies to know, 1/6 of Americans are on food stamps like Wal-mart cashiers/cashier managers because wages and benefits are so low and the work hours are random enough every week that you can never hold a 2nd job. Many Americans are getting juuuust enough to get to the next paycheck but they are one serious car repair or doctor visit away from a financial disaster or a loan shark.
I love a good colin rant so more please
Wish we got more CLS videos. I love Colin's coverage of video games, but I miss these videos getting love too.
This is the content I love! Great job Colin!
Great video again Colin. Keep up the fight. 🙂
Hey Colin I really loved this video. I feel like you said a lot of things I have been thinking for quite some time. I just wish there was more we as a group could do to instigate some real change in this country. It's so hard to take action when most of us have jobs that take us away from trying to make any change in the world. A lot of people I'm surrounded by have also turned themselves off completely to what's happening in the country. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that I know who cares about what's happening to our great nation. Thank you Colin for the work you do. You truly are an inspiration.
AH! I miss Colin Rants. This was absolutely well done.
Great video Colin! Will fireside chats ever make their way to UA-cam?
Great stuff, Colin.
Hard to disagree with any of this.
Oaky
Yeah, I think he overstated the "catastrophic effects" of global warming.
Awesome as always, Colin.
Where's my popcorn? This is gonna be good.
You are the voice of reason Colin.
This. Right. Here.We should all be asking if the idea is good before we ask who came up with it and when an idea is flawed these flaws shouldn't be glossed over, minimized or overlooked; Acknowledge the good, work on the bad and make it something you don't have to mask form people who would have questions. When something isn't working the way it needs to we should be willing to make adjustments and monitor new outcomes before we burn it down and start over.
Great episode and topic. We don't agree on everything but I couldn't agree more with you on each issue you spoke on. Thank you for your time and passion on your shows.
Honesty. That's what I love about you Collin.
Loved the rant Colin!
Great stuff! Thank you!!!!
I would love more rants! 😁
This was a good video Colin.
Now THIS is a common sense (and in turn, progressive) set of questions. You won me back a bit with this one; not gonna lie.
I don’t always agree with Colin but he does talk a lot of sense and backs up his opinions and arguments.
I loved this episode, more rants please!!!
I love this video since you reference the West Wing, one of the best shows of all time (at least seasons 1-4, after that it slips with the departure of Sorkin). However I noticed ads are now before your vids and on the sub bar. Not that ads are bad, they earn you money which is much deserved. I just wish you hadn’t made such a big point about “no ads” in all your previous videos. This isn’t to bash you, I really enjoy your vids. I’m just a bit disappointed, but will continue to watch and enjoy.
I was surprised Net Neutrality didn't make an appearance, but you did a whole video on it, which I shared, so that works.
Great video Colin! Definitely enjoyed the rant. We need more voices of reason as the left continues to drift further left, and the right further right, with absolutely nothing getting accomplished.
Colin for President 20XX
You should read the book Sea Power- The History and Geopolitics of the World's Oceans by Admiral James Stavridis it came out in October and it's a great read. It gives some insight of why we spend so much on the defense budget and why there's so many bases around the world. It also makes you fear how much power the Russians will have when the arctic ocean starts to melt and all the resources that become available to them. Again just a recommendation because I feel you and the audience will love it. Hope you see this! (I'm also a little bias I'm a Navy Nuke)
Colin, do unscripted rants. That is the Colin we like best.
Rants are always wonderful. Colin and Razorfirst are my favs, haha
I have had opportunity to wonder if the issue of bipartisanship is solely the fault of the politicians, or if there is a deeper corruption involved. Money speaks, and solving the problems you are ranting about (which I agree with and love hearing said out loud) would be devastating to the finances of huge corporate and individual interests. The very wealthy do not want most of these things to be fixed. It's a problem.
Politicians are constantly being pushed to more extreme positions and partisanship by their constituents. For Republicans if they compromise they're called rhinos and voted out by their own constituents, and Dems are called spineless or called out by their colleagues like Bernie did to Hilary to force her to move extremely left.
Get insurance out of our healthcare. Insurance is important, but it needs to be treated more like car insurance - it doesn't tell you where you can buy your car, at what price you can buy it at, what mechanic you can use, or what brand of parts you use to fix it. It's just there to help us financially and fucks off for the rest of it.
Any for-profit entity that claims a stake in how a doctor can care for a patient needs to be suffocated. We need to allow companies to buy medicine in bulk across state lines.
We need free trade and personal liberty measures put back into our healthcare system, not auction it off to the highest bidder.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!!!! I've been complaining about this for a long time. I've been sitting here saying "WTF" to congress for what seems should be obvious things where common ground can be found. Just means that both parties need to be blown up. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on an analysis on the what seems to be implosion of the GOP based off of recent news.
So, whenever I think about these issues it seems like the best and only way for action to take place is through our voting process. I always feel completely lost, and I think many would agree with me, in learning about candidates and their platforms in a comprehensive way. Do you know of any resources or ways in which we can better inform ourselves besides just seeing what the news outlets put out? Love the channel btw :)
Wow this is awesome. Somehow I fee smarter after this vid. Thanks Again Bro
Colin Fan since the IGN days ❤️
I agree with another comment that Colin should do a video on the Palestine/Israel conflict. Seems relevant given the recent news. One documentary I found useful was called Occupation 101, freely available on UA-cam. Although I had to watch it more than once before I finally understood it. Most Americans are pretty surprised when they truly understand what's going on over there right now...
Lol I got an ad for Net Neutrality
LETS GET PURPLE EVERYBODY
I could listen to more of your ranting
Colin, I agree that our increase in military spending every year is excessive and should be reduced. But have you ever thought that maybe the budget is so much higher than more populated countries’ militaries (like China) because we pay the full-time income of millions of heroic and dedicated officers and soldiers? China’s military spending is far less than ours, yes, but they can afford to pay their soldiers very low amounts of money to barely get by on, which helps keep their numbers low overall. I agree that much of our defense spending can be cut through reducing our foreign intervention, but just some food for thought on why our military spending is so much higher than other countries. Great video as always!
Not a fan of continually raising retirement. Those who spend their lives working blue-collar labor can't keep working till their 70. Pushing it back just makes it more and more a benefit for the white-collar upper class who realistically don't need the assistance.
Colin for president!!!
I agree with a lot of what was said here. The parties are too polarized, and there's too much money at stake, legal or otherwise. That's why nothing gets done, and why we will continue down this path. If this tax bill makes it into law, and then they start going for Social Security and Medicare, that may be when the reckoning happens.
Ultimately, we are in desperate need of a viable 3rd party. Our system sucks.
The current political climate is way too toxic for any sort of bipartisan agreement. Which is sad because as pointed out there A LOT of things that need fixing in this country.
Thank you for being reasonable. How is this such a hard concept for modern day politics to understand? We should not be spending that much on our military. Seriously.
I would vote for Colin
You had my upvote at "Josiah Bartlett"
Love the video. 1 point: We don't have military bases all over the world to blanketly protect other nations. We have them to exploit other nations, provide aid to nations that support our political/ economic agenda regardless of morality, and to overthrow governments that won't play ball.
Both parties and, more importantly, the largest corporate donors agree on this, so it won't change. We need third party candidates in all branches of gov. Especially the presidency. But the committee that controls eligibility for primary elections have made this virtually impossible since the last attempt in the late 90s.
Who wants war is the wrong question I think. It's, what happens when the military industrial complex goes unchecked? In Eisenhower's farewell speech he said "Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals" and I think that "alert and knowledgeable citizenry" can be applied to the other topics Colin brings up. It's maybe too much to ask from a state that's probably going to vote Moore to the senate and a country that reached a point Trump was voted as President but it's a worthy cause to strive for.
COLIN FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!!
The topic of “Partisanship” has become exhausting. We all know why things are done they way they are; campaign contributions / money in politics.
It won’t change until people vote out incumbents that abuse it, But the average joe doesn’t educate themselves on the behavior of their reps. So on and on it goes, as it has for thousands of years.
I'm 100% serious when I say I would support and donate to your cause if you would ever run for president
My favorite episodes are when you put your ranty pants on!
Is there a clear recommendation or path to fixing the lack of anything happening? Is it just that new leaders need to emerge or can our broken leadership be fixed through pressure of citizens?
Excellent
Yes, raise retirement to 70, that way people die until their very last breath possible. Good thing a healthy 33 year old living in socal off internet money and never needs to leave his house or speak to a human in person and has the copious amount of free time to watch 7 seasons of a tv show, one he has already seen, isn't in charge.
"What's halting us from raising taxes on the very rich?"
Libertarians?
A fringe political party (that is growing more idiotic and less relevant by the year) holding a fringe political view has the power to do that?
God damn now I want to be a libertarian!
Nah, but it's their sentiments which are stopping such things from happening.
The Koch brothers and Mercer (at least on economic issues) consider themselves libertarians and they basically own the GOP...
+Richard Crawford I agree. The outsized influence of lobbies and donors on both political parties really feels like the elephant in the room here.
MrDuhVinci basic economics, raising taxes on the rich tends to be a political move rather than actually bringing in more money, it might even bring in less money
I just saw an ad before the video...
Do I see me a Megaman in the background? I hope the new megaman game comin is gonna be good.
More cool American history topics! Please and thank you
Pretty much nailed it
I'd be interested to hear Colin give his thoughts on how our current system for funding elections plays into this partisanship run amok.
Good questions raised. However I tend to think that bipartisanship for the sake of it is toxic. The overton window has been pulled so far to the right that compromise and bipartisanship at best is center right. The left fails to get anything pretty much in my opinion.
Colin great rant, please excuse me adding my only little bit.The worlds best and brightest are not welcome with those that keep global focus technologies that are reliant on oil based products, otherwise simple problems like generating energy from non oil and current electrical based technologies wouldn't be stagnating, instead we would have real world solutions on the table, and the global market place is more interested in money programs to offset carbon instead of looking at globally unified solutions for free energy programs, privatization of energy in Australia for one example has killed off ingenuity and technology progression because its all about increased shareholder profits, not fixing problems.... anyways my only little rant to add to yours. Great job mate
This is a 10/10. There is nothing better than someone saying what needs to be said.
Isn't cap and trade a good way for CO2 emitters to maximize efficiency? If they are efficient they save money and if they arent the government gets a bit more cash to spend.
A congressman in 2017 works hard, but doesn't work for the people. They move the agenda of their big donators and play whatever game they need to to keep their spot. My theory is that this comes from the common man not paying attention to what their local congressman is doing. Everybody's talking about the big picture and complaining about Donald Trump which really won't make a difference. Change would come if we all just looked at our own representatives and senators, and made our vote based on what they're doing
Oh both parties are bipartisan. Whenever there's an even minimal opportunity for war they are bipartisan as fuck.
I think this misses the point a bit. Partisanship is part of the problem, but I think it is more of a method than the foundation of the issue. And the real issue is that both parties are, in a very similar way, beholden to their true masters: Corporations. Sure, the gun industry is more on the Republican side, for instance, but both major parties are only working for a very small, but powerful, class of people, be it Big Pharma, Big Oil, Wall Street or any other major lobbyist group.
I think this is the factor that halts any compromise through the partisan theater in Washington.
crony capitalism. it's not capitalism. remove government from these industries. take the power away from the government so they have nothing to corrupt, nothing to bought for. no tax codes and regulations that favor specific corporations.
we just need a true free market. competition. liberty.
I smell libertarian bullshit here. On principle, it has a point, but why are corporations, free from any and all regulations, not going to gauge the consumers? The solution is clearly more complicated than that talking point.
Amen amen I say to you good sir. Death to partisanship!
More rants please
Sad thing is alot of these issues arent even that hard to solve but both sides are so intrenched and worried about alienating their small vocal base that they wont do anything rather than be seen giving somthing to the other side. The sad thing is that vocal base are the people who vote in every election and at every level, what needs to happen is the american people need to to go out and vote in mass numbers. When only 58% of the population is voting, and at least 40% of that are commited to one party no matter what, that sends a very divisive message to Washington that compromise isnt what the people want. That 58% needs to become 80% to 90% of the population to send a clear message that the american people will happily accept compromise over partisan gridlock, the parties are to blame but so are we the population for not letting our voices be heard and simply saying i I can quote the Simpsons "Cant someone else do it"
Man the West Wing is soooooo good
I don’t think you wasted my time Colin.
Colin, you are wrong about majorly scaling back the defense spending. It shouldn't be increased and could be cut by a fifth, but America does need bases around the world. China is grabbing resources and land and would be a major threat to US interests were it not for the military. The military is basically the guarantee for the debt to China
Where does rationality sit on the right left divide?
More rants please.
Great video as always.
Can you do a video on Rommel or the Palestine/israel conflict.
Ibrahim Bakri I second this
Ibrahim Bakri Palestine/Israel conflict was chosen by the patreon users as one of the next episodes, so you can look forward to that :)
Tobyrobot Great! Hope he is on our side.
lol get em Colin!!!
