In a lecture to non-Muslims, Sulayman Nyang details the fascinating history of a European country ruled by Muslims which, not too long ago, was considered a wonder of the world and a major center of civilization. At the Dar al Islam Teachers' Institute in New Mexico, Dr. Nyang begins with the context of Muslim Spain by discussing the Umayyid rule, its subsequent downfall and its resurrection in Al-Andulus. He then briefly outlines the events leading up to the Muslim rule in Spain, the atmosphere created by it, and the primary reason for its decline. He shows how the development, growth and contribution of Muslim Spain is not much different from modern America and its presence and influence on the world scene; a comparison that allows for a better understanding of the profound history of Muslim civilization in the West. Dr. Nyang concludes by analyzing the transformation of Muslim culture into Spain, namely the lifestyle, architecture, business dealings and knowledge. Other topics discussed: Muslims as custodians of Greek knowledge, the invention of the bank check, interfaith coexistence, Charles Martel's victory, and the Inquisition. (Duration: 1 hour, 16 min) This lecture is the second part of a session covering Africa and Spain. The first part is entitled "The History of Islam in Africa".

Unfortunately, the professor is picking and choosing history. Tarek bin Ziyad was a Berber/Moor from West Africa. He was not an Arab. The Moors who invaded Spain were Black people based on the depiction of the Europeans themselves. In fact, the word "moro" (like in Morocco) means Black in Spanish. Its incredible that an African Muslim professor cannot even bring himself to point out the contribution of Black African Muslims
Pet Charles the invaders were berbers that for Spanish people were black because they're darker.

Although I kind of do believe though, that it's only because hes not really looking at it all from a racial perspective following the example of the way the Moors would have done back in those days. Although its very important to know these days because of all the cover up, racism and lies spread ever since the modern victors has reversed the roles which according to his speech will all be aventually changing once again. This was very interesting and helped me understand Islam in Europe. What I can say hero's such as El Cid and A. P de Guzman we know see may have been Moors from North Africa. A lot of Spanish noble families cleaned up their Moorish roots. Al Andalusia is a great place to see what is still around from Islamic Times.
All genetic studies there is hardly any North African and no Arab blood in Spaniards. All achievements in Spain were made by native Spaniards under the sword of Islam, and not thanks to islam.

My question is are these Muslims you speak of what we now refer to as "Black" and darkskinned Arab people? I've noticed how he follows the example of the ancient though who would never bring up race although when he mentioned the Jews he did mention that they were also referred to as the Moriscos back then which were Moors. Anyway his lecture was very informative and interesting or I should also say fascinating for so many other reasons.

If you knew something about history, which I see you don't, you would know that the only place in America where there are indigenous people is the countries of Hispanic America, that is, the countries whose culture, language, society, come from Spain....yes If you go to countries like Canada, the United States, Haiti, etc.... that is to say, countries where the United Kingdom, France, etc. were, you will see that there are many indigenous people in these countries.
It is amusing to see that you are unaware that indigenous people disappeared from Canada, the United States, etc...in these countries genocide sponsored by those governments was committed...and yet, curiously, in the countries that were part of the Spanish Crown the indigenous people survive, among other things because the Spanish Crown enacted laws to protect the indigenous people and abolish slavery since the 16th century (slavery in the United States lasted until the 19th century, with the end of the War of Secession in the USA ).
The mortality that the indigenous suffered was really due to diseases, but the Spaniards are not to blame for that. It is as if the Europeans blamed it for the Black Death of the 13th century, which was the most devastating known to humanity, with a third of Europeans dying, and that is documented, we blamed Asia, which is the where it originated...which is ridiculous...
In addition, the conquest of America was carried out by the indigenous people commanded by the Spanish, against other indigenous people such as the Aztecs who had subjugated the rest of the indigenous peoples around them.
Do you think that with just a few hundred Spaniards a continent could have been conquered?... ridiculous... the Spaniards did defeat the indigenous peoples with whom they clashed and then these peoples allied with the Spanish to confront to the Aztec civilization that they hated for centuries of oppression, cannibalism, etc.....
In the year 1521, the capital of the Aztec empire, Tenochtitlan, whose population was 250,000 inhabitants, fell under the troops of Hernán Cortés, and the troops were barely a few hundred Spaniards accompanied by several tens of thousands of indigenous Tlaxcalans, Purepecha, Otomi , etc... peoples who hated the Aztecs to death and did not leave a single stone standing on Tenochtitlan.
That year on the ashes of Tenochtitlan, the Spanish founded Mexico City, capital of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, which became the economic center of the world due to its wealth and commercial growth. Today that city survives 5 centuries later and its inhabitants speak Spanish, like most of the American continent.
I advise you to better document yourself and study history, not Hollywood movies, where they only tell lies and facts that did not happen in reality, or listen to so-called "professors" charlatans who have no idea what they are talking about.

Well i would call it the rise of Andalucia. Certainly in spite of the recent recession , Spain has an overwhelmingly better standard of living and culture than North Africa and zeons better than Bangladesh. The Muslim immigrants in Spain, even though they are not needed a not wanted still don't want to go back to their Muslim civilization. +Bosco Calleja You're absolutely correct. See, most people don't know the history of Spain, or who the Visigoths were. The truth is that the invading Muslim's destroyed the Iberian Peninsula. They tried to erase the history of the region, Iberia. Also, all of these great Muslim accomplishments, and inventions were just taken from other culture's. They spread very fast through parts of Europe, Africa, the middle east, and India. They took what they thought was valuable from these conquered people, and destroyed the rest.

One thing is Islamic dominion of the whole territory of Spain, and another very different thing that is what really happened is that of Islamic presence in Spain. Islam never dominated 100% of the territory of Spain, never achieved it and that was their downfall. The Christians vowed to reconquer the land of their ancestors and expel the Islamic enemy. The professor speaks of dominion, but really from the first year, the presence of Islam goes back century to century until ending in 1492.
The religion and culture that spaniards export to America, it was the Christian culture and religion, not the Muslim, fortunately.
The history of Spain is the story of an incredible country, and it is unparalleled in the whole world.

@Micheal Hnat I think it has been you who has been taught lies. History texts are available to anyone who wants to read them. I doubt very much that a person, like this supposed "teacher," that every phrase he utters is of doubtful truthfulness, can be believed by someone. You just have to visit Spain and you will see that what this "teacher" says is absolutely false.
Most Muslims believe there only one Quran. Incorrect the first Quran do not mention Muhammad may peace be upon him. The first Quran was given by The moors that was destroyed by the Greeks . The Iberian people NEVER "collaborated" as you put it, with the Muslim's. They did not welcome them in. This is also documented if you do your research. The Iberian(Spanish)people who didn't flee to the north, were under Muslim control. The ones that weren't enslaved, were treated like second class citizens. There were rules they had to abide by. They couldn't ride horses like the muslims. They had to pay a tax. There were many rules, even what they could wear. Basically they were treated like slaves. The ones that coverted did so simply to be treated better. Many city's were abandon when the Muslims arrived in Iberia. They had heard of the horrible treatment by the Muslims. When the Christians in the north slowly took back the peninsula, Spaniard's would come back with them. The Iberian people that could afford to get out of Muslim areas, would travel north to Christian territory's. Under no circumstances was the Muslim invasion of the Iberian peninsula peaceful. And even between the Muslims there was constant fighting. They fought amongst themselves all the time, and the Christians would take advantage of this, and strike. The Muslim's loved the newly conquered land of Iberia. They had a new source of slaves. Slavery was a huge industry in the Muslim empire. There are writings about this from Muslims that still exist. There is one that I found fascinating of a wealthy Muslim buying women. He liked the Fair hair, and fair skin of the women from the Iberian Peninsula. He would take these European women, and put them in his harem, and sell them to other Muslims in North Africa, and the middle east. By no means was there ever any time of peace. The Muslim's destroyed the land. They would send raiding party's to the north to destroy city's, burn down the churches, and get slaves to bring back with them. There was no peace. The Christians slowly, but surly fought to get there land back, and after hundreds of years, they took back there peninsula. And people were expelled out of Spain to prevent this Terror from ever happening again. They had a very good reason to expell non Christians from their land.

A century later, in the sixteenth century, the Spanish King Philip III decreed that Muslims were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula and there was no trace of Islam in Spain and end point.
Wrong, the Byzantine or Eastern Roman Empire retook Vandal controlled North Africa By 540 A.D. The Arab invading army didnot fight the Vandals and another point the Vandals didnot Rule in Spain or Portugal - See 17:15 to 17:20 he says "Andalucia the Vandals lived there"?. I would recommend people look and study genuine History Books by noted Historians, rather than this man.
