- In this live performance, Sierra Ferrell takes us to the depths of emotion with "29” (A Dirge in D Minor) It's not just a song; it's a haunting journey through sorrow and empathy.
The title, "29," is a poignant nod to the Upper Big Branch mine disaster, a tragedy that claimed 29 lives. This live rendition is a testament to the power of music to convey profound sadness and to honor the memory of those who have endured tragedy, and how it transcends personal experience. Even if you've never faced a tragedy like this, you can't help but be moved by the universal themes of loss and empathy. It's a reminder of our shared humanity; Along with the fact that this song was written mere hours after the tragedy speaks volumes about its relevance in today's culture. It's a poignant reminder that art has the power to respond and provide solace.
Don't miss this extraordinary performance by Sierra Ferrell. Let the music wash over you, and join the conversation about the emotions it stirs. Share your thoughts in the comments and let this dirge open your mind as well as your heart ♥️
Sierra Ferrell - Vocals

You are quite welcome thanks for a beautiful song
The Liquid Canvas this is a totally sick song. Thank you for posting and brightening the world for 6:28
@@johnschool no one gives a fuck
@@darksky1557...certainly not about you shmuck
I have spent 20 years working underground. Love mining songs. This is the best one ever written. Sierra is the most exciting person to hit the music scene in 30 years.
💯%
I’m seriously mindblown by her
so glad she is getting her dues now. "Long Time Coming"...indeed
I’m thinkin’ Gillian Welch
Everyone thanks the singer ... I just have to say those guitars are haunting and melodic. Kudos to all the "back up" musicians who may not get all the credit they deserve
Mike Pushkin - rhythm guitar/head songwriter
Josh Thomas - buttery leads
I was really getting into the guitars as well as a different quality to her voice than in her country stuff. How can people listen to music made on a computer without touching an instrument when stuff like this exists?
@@MitchMb14 yep, I totally feel this way too. X
@@MitchMb14 Ya it's like she dropped the whiney twang and got possessed by our lady and savior the great white witch stevie amen hallelujah! lol.
@@siastone93 I like the whiny twang! I like Jolie Holland's exaggerated drawl, too. I guess I'm just easy.
Amazing how popular a song like Rich men north of Richmond can be and yet this gem goes unnoticed.
Most have no clue about this industry and its impact on countless lives.
Dude @@TheLiquidCanvas
Why the F did it take me 10 years to find Sierra! One of my new favorites that I can’t stop watching 😵💫
11 years for me, and I grew up in Charleston.
Likewise blown away it took me this long to find her, and we have the same last name lol
New here 👑
I just got here
I miss sierra before she got discovered I'll always be a fan an her music is great no matter what the size of the crowd ...but I hope she still sings like this when its just the stars and moon to listen bc u can tell the difference when she feels it the raw talent burns on this beautiful siren
Thank God for Sierra Ferrell and Colter Wall; their music goes straight to grit and guts.
Colter's performance in the song Bob Fudge is by far my favorite. The journey, the story, the beginning and the end of a mans life. Goosebumps everytime.
Colter is a pretender. Sierra is the real deal. Colter got the voice but he's just a rich kid living off his daddies money
Damn straight!

shhhh
Fifty years from now, this vid will still be legit. ⚒️🇺🇸
Sierra knocks the wind out of me, no words for her amazingness. Gives me shivers every time!
Such a sad story, the brave coal miner's of West Virginia. 29 men lost their lives that day, we will never forget that day, May God Bless!!!☯️
Dear Sierra, may all your dreams come true.
Keep rocking your gift while being true to you.
We all believe in you.
Them boys sure can play the shit out of those guitars!!

give this a listen
SIerra, please include '29' in your May Atlanta setlist. Your band or bring Josh and Mike along. This song is too good not to play.😅
Shannon Hoon vibes on this one. I love what Sierra has done with her music in the decade since this performance but this is magical
Well said. I wanna her sing Change or Soul One or Mouthful of Cavities, or anything by BM for that matter....
@@urthtone Mouthfull of Cavities for sure.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Never heard of her now I'ma have to check her out 👑
@@urthtonelove to hear her sing Skinned lol
I spend alot of time on her music but with the guitars and the production and the content of this song i have to say it is my favorite.
I've searched for anything about Sierra or by her that I could find on UA-cam. She is now getting so well known that anyone who has anything by her is putting it up on UA-cam. It's been fun watching her develop since 2014. I'll keep looking. Her baby photos are bound to show up sooner or later. I'm 80 and a big fan.
She posted an old family photo on her FaceBook page for Mother's Day, May 2023 - Sierra is the little baby :-) I only learned of Sierra Ferrell in December '21, so I RESENT ALL YOU PEOPLE who know her from farther back!!! jk
I AM SEETHING WITH ENVY OF YOU, @jamesscott4533! I only found Sierra Ferrell on YT in December '21😞! btw, Sierra Ferrell posted on her Facebook, on Mothers Day '23, a baby picture of her in her mom's lap, and her brothers. God Bless Sierra Ferrell's mom :-)
75 for me. I LOVE HER. I love everything about her.
@jamesscott4553 That's the power of GOOD music, Sierra is a timeless, she unites All ages from toddler to Grandpa.we love her!😊😉😊
I came here for Sierra and she delivered. The gentlemen on the guitar delivered even harder. Incredible song. I had no idea of this event, but the ridiculously good guitar and vocals both made me look this up to understand. What a tragedy. 😢 Kudos to all of you for both your insane talent and for making sure we all know and remember the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster. 🫡
Some say it’s almost heaven. I don’t know. You can see it from here.
Objects in this mirror are closer than they appear.
The shaft drops even deeper ’til you can’t see us anymore.
We serve a life, or death, sentence for the crime of being poor.
25 is now 29
What’s mine is yours
‘Cause it damn sure ain’t mine
Should we fix it, shut it down, or just pay the fine?
25 is now 29.
Never did mind Mondays
and today we were s’posed to win it all.
Well, if not today then one day,
But life sure ain’t basketball.
Can’t seem to win for losing,
But I’ll be damned if I ever stop trying.
Go to work to earn a living on Monday
And one day, one day I’ll earn a dying.
Montani Semper Libri, maybe not free, but we work cheap.
Our reward’s in the by and by
Where the mountain’s high and the coal runs deep.
‘Til then we love the men we work for.
They feed our families, they pay our bills.
In kind, we dig their mines
And build their mansions on our hills.
Thank you for this. Such a heartbreaking yet beautiful song.
Last part second verse
“Go to work to earn a living on Monday, and one day, one day, you’re gonna die-e”
Thanks ^-^
Also “we can’t seem to win for losing”
Listen again and go over what you wrote lol
@@xzanth2722 I think it’s “I’ll earn a dying”
Sends a shiver down my back the sound of these two guitars and that voice pure and powerful
My first Sierra video/song had me hooked.
I just discovered her old stuff.
Always great, no matter what.
Real music, real message. One of my favorite songs of all time. Earthy and gutsy truth by a musical genius and talented artists.
What a proper honor to those who lost their lives, and those left behind. Beautiful.
From one West Virginian to another, May God Bless!!!🌌
She's got the strength to be a voice like Hazel Dickens
The combination of guitar and Sierra Ferrell and her ability to share emotion is so amazing. It brings tears to my eyes.
One of the very best songs ever and a West Virginia girl to boot, Almost Heaven!
Dang, wasn't expecting a 10 yr old video to be recorded/mixed this nicely.
And why not? Lol we didnt have as portable of gear back then, but we had some gear alright 🤣. Front of house with sends to recording software. Two camera angles, but one was corrupted so we just used my continuous hand held, given the zooms and what not, which would normally switch to the other angle when zooming or repositioning. So, it wasn't PERFECT but glad it came out this way. We were just having fun, no clue it would reach so many. #interwebs Also, this sat here for 6 years with less than 100 views.
You think that technology just emerged this year?
Today i found the diamond in the rough! So much for me thinking i was aware of all the great artists on the music scene. Then this music shows up on my phone today.I have no idea how. I listened and i am spechless. What a gift for the New Year 2023! Wow! Sierra i became one of your biggest fans in about 10 hours. Thank You!
Try lost dog street band. Some good folk jams there too
She’s on a huge tour right now. Gotta see her live
This song and video should have so many more views. I didn’t know what the song was about at first. Her voice is so captivating and the band is perfect with the vocals.
This performance is Gold
Both my grandads were coalminers in Swadlincote, England. I'm grateful they made it out ok and had long retirements, RIP to the 29. This song breaks my heart. She's sensational, i saw her twice recently. Great work by the band also.
Fabulous authentic folk guitars and the magic of Sierra. Outstanding.
This song means so much and the talent is atmospheric.
UA-cam is cool because you can watch an artist slowly become increasingly famous and also grow as an artist. It's great when it acknowledges truly talented people and not a muck bang or something.
Like Tash Sultana. Busking then ….. onward.
She can do pretty much everything she wants with her voice
It's really great and impressive. Stumbled on this by accident and am grateful I did.
A star was born.
Might be the earliest footage with Sierra Ferrell right here ✨
Sierra you are fantastic, great versatility and a wonderful voice
Truly a phenomenal piece of artistry right there, Sierra and the Boy's bring it all the way home on this one.
Such a gripping song, I am enthralled by your bands performance...incredible
I pray this song is recorded & released one day ❤️🔥🎶✨
I love this song. The guitar work and Sierra's voice are remarkable together. The song lyrics are so powerful.
This is so Appalachian Woodstock and im here for it
Each time I listen to a Ferrell video I feel like I am getting to know a completely new musician.
My headphones were made for this. Thank you thank you thank you Scierra. The band are outstanding 🙌🙌🙌
This an event I know nothing about save for this song.. It brings tears to my eyes
Well, look at my luck and bumping into this wonderful woman and her as wonderful music
Love this song. Neil Young vibes through my bones!
Thank you for that storytelling so beautiful so deep ty
This is the best I ever heard her
Hauntingly gorgeous!
Great song , Great voice Thank you for being you and turning me on to Kick-Ass music !
Sierra is awesome
Watched this video so many times... Every time I appreciate a new detail I hadnt appreciated enough the first time, or the 15th! The details of the disaster you reference in the song are right on point, especially '...just pay the fine' Horrific ommisions/crimes made at every level. Also I love the reverence and respect for miners who work so hard and sometimes die doing that work to care for the families they love. Amazingly emotional lyrics!! Dirge like singing, especially at the end, sounding like a scream or cry, is so right on! 💜
There is somthing so very sacred about this and of course its u sierra but the spirits came for the jam on this one as many others. Thank you
The spirits came for this one indeed. 😌
MEMORY ETERNAL! 🕯️
Great song !
Those miners who died April 2010 were killed by the executive leader of the mining company.
don blankenshit intentionally prevented maintenance of safety equipment, punished miners who spoke up about safety issues & pushed the miners to mental & physical fatigue so he could pocket more $$.
That filty cur only spent 1 year in jail. 29 lives lost. 29 families devastated.
Then the pos ran for US prez !
Today we have miners at Warrior Met in Alabama are under attack by the greedy coal owners there.
From Western Canada..........this young lady and her band are magnificent.........and I use to hate country music.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe they call it mountain music.
Beautiful ❤🎉😊
Just seeing this just now…it came into my feed. While i really dig her 1940’s sound she’s doing now, ***THIS*** is AWESOME….. I suspect she wanted you to take it down because she wants to be identified with her current sound, but man, i wish she’d get back to doing this kinda stuff! And yes, i agree with another poster saying she’s a mashup of Janis and Dolly…and i’d throw in a bit of Loretta in for good measure…. Great sound mixing too.
You know your stuff. Thank you, most never even mention the mix. But to me, its far more memorable than the angles lol Had two cams but lost one corrupted. Hence, the moving around that SHOULD have been cuts. Thank you for your attention and kind words 🙌
@@TheLiquidCanvas Yeah, i read the commenter who busted your balls for bad camera work---"the cameraman should be fired!" I almost kinda agreed with him, till i read your explanation, and it made total sense.... And even then, the moving around and out of focus shots gave the vid more character and added to the song's message... Glad i finally got to see (and hear) it!
@@CorneiliusLibowitz as obvious as it may seem, this was the first time this tune was played, amidst the tragedy that took place. She just had an energy, I can't explain it but it was there. So my main focus was capturing that and those ridiculous pickers and blending the two. But instead, we got far more intimate encounter of her before all the fame. #oneofakind
@@TheLiquidCanvas Hey, i just played this on my [real] stereo system (David Hafler XL-280 amp, APT Holman pre-amp, Polk Audio speakers) and it sounds GREAT, tho i can barely hear the drums. But the guitars and the voice are spot on...... I close my eyes and she's singing right in front of me, and the respective guitars are on either side... And considering my source is an iPad, where i'm sure we're losing some dynamic range, it's pretty impressive.... Well done. Now, if we can get her to put this on an album, or at least an EP........................
@@CorneiliusLibowitz the drummer was not in the band and just joined mid song, so he wasnt mic'd. But thank you, I doubt its any higher than 16-bit 44.1k dude to UA-cam compression algos. I'm just glad someone really got HEAR the mix. It's one thing on a phone, but nothing like true stereo. Thanks again 🙌
Its amazing it took 15 years. She is 35.
Fantastic!
The 38 dislikes were just too drunk to use a mouse correctly.
Great arrangement. Great sound!
Good job baby sister
Please, Please don't remove this beautiful Sierra video. Please!
I was asked by her personally to take it down, then someone uploaded a copy they ripped from me. He got over 80k views, so i put mine back up for a short time. However looks like they want mine down but not the other one. Ill hold as long as i can.. 👍
@@TheLiquidCanvas why did she want you to remove it?
@@TheLiquidCanvas I love her voice and songs, but stand with you. Hold strong. Guessing record label pressure. Fuck em. She should respect the lil guy as a former busker.
Excellent guitar work and a wonderful voice that makes guilt and tragedy tangible.
West Virginia and Kentucky all the way !!!
Crazy how far she’s come
I love this woman
Serria makes something terrible into something wonderful ❤️
Man....gets me every time
Nice makes you think the power of good music
I listen to anything and everything done well......ty
A Grace Slick Jefferson Airplane sound but better. The music is almost psychedelic but comes back to roots.Amazing.
So pure.
Talent!!!
So damn good
6:00 OMG Flawless. ✌
Damn this so damn fine!
So musical so attractive a force
thank you
Feck me! 14 years ago and I've just seen this..... Superb! Her vocals go from Billie Holiday to Stevie Nicks and I'm in absolute awe of her talent. Can't believe it took a Bluegrass UA-cam rabbit hole before I found her. I guess listening to so much Techno can mess with your algorithm 🙃
YES! Love it.
Ok im on 🔁 repeat now😮 🔥
I worked underground for a long time,20 yrs ain’t nothing like going home looking like a struck match
Love Sierra. Love this song. 600lbs of sin is a line from a Grateful Dead song called Dire Wolf.

All I said was "come on in"
Definitely a Dead vibe in this song.
That'd be awesome to date a girl that sang and played so you could chill together and always have someone to jam with and write
