- CRISPR allows scientists to perform surgery on our DNA.
For people with genetic diseases it has transformed lives with corrections that aren’t passed on to others.
But should the technology be used in ways that permanently transform the human race?

Education and skills can make any human a superhuman:-)
As a biology student and someone who’s been interested in genome evolution, I look up Jennifer of UC Berkeley who’s been been on that forefront for years now. I’ve been following her ever since she did TED talk years ago. Well deserved in the Nobel prize.
It's really interesting technology. However, there's always a limitation to everything. For me, I would concern myself more with the POSITIVE effect of this technology. Treating diseases, good use for developing our fields of agriculture.
I don't think it's fair for the babies they don't have a choice or say in the matter. I think they should do it on adults who consent to it.

Now I am proud of being a biotechnologist.
How can I become a biotechnologist?
I agree that it might be incorrect to use it on unborn children in the absense of a life threatening disease. But purely in order to treat diseases such as sickle cell, vitilligo and alzheimer's, i think Crisper can take us lot closer to the results and just we seek. Only problem in using this technology in adults is targeting the exact cells we look for if i dont mistake according to what I have read. Really great if this technology can develop further to treat above mentioned diseases.
I think nanotech will help targeting exact cell. So we need to support for both crispr and nanotech

Can it be used in adults to change their appearence? If so, it can be amazing. This also can be used to cure many diseases like aging and so on. The pros are to good to stop it. I say we must use it for good.
my biggest hope is that it can be used to change an adults sexual and romantic orientation. i was born asexual aromantic and am really hating it and am hoping they find a way to change it some day. that would be the happiest day of my life. but that discovery wont be made until many decades, if ever im sure. with my luck il probably be dead before they dicover it.
@@HermitKing731 there's nothing wrong with being an asexual aromantic. You deserve all the love in the world as someone of that sexual orientation. There's nothing wrong with you the way you are. Nonetheless, that doesn't suddenly make the hate go away but please remember that you don't deserve hate. Society has taught us that having a partner is like the pinnacle of adult life or something but even without that you still hold the capacity to make genuine friendships that'll last a lifetime. Who's to say that platonic love comes second? It's so fulfilling and just as important as platonic love. You deserve all the love in the world just as you are. I don't understand the fear of so-called "designer babies". People have this odd idea that as a consequence, everyone would look the same. In reality, what's defined as beautiful is often a characteristic that is rare. Nobody would want blue eyes if everyone has blue eyes.
And in regards to other aspects which are universally seen as more beautiful, like for example a very symmetric face, straight teeth, and so on, well why wouldn't you want everyone to be beautiful? What's so horrific about a world in which everyone is good-looking, intelligent, healthy, and athletic?
What is the point of playing the game if you already designed everything yourself
I think the power of this technology should be used to treat rare diseases or malfunction with consent!
It should be used to treat everything, and to enhance everything it can
With technology pushing into realms we had never dreamed of thirty years ago.
The guidelines for some of these technologies have yet to be written....

Don't forget pure cloning...

Superb 👌
So much has happened since CRISPR began.
Blueprint by Robert Plomin is a great book on behavioral genetics and helps you gain an understanding on how things like polygenic scores could change the way we understand behavior and psychological traits. Also, I from what I read, there won’t be “designer babies” anytime soon in the sense that scientists would be able to significantly alter traits like intelligence or physical capabilities. Yes it is important to consider research and engage in ethical discussion- especially because the treatment of single gene disorders could happen in the very near future. But, traits like intelligence involve thousands, or hundreds of thousands of genes that scientists are just beginning to identify- not to mention these hundreds of thousands of genes are used by the body for many other functions. There is no single “intelligence gene,” and even genes that are related to intelligence effect many other functions, so beginning to alter them, on a scale of thousands given we don’t fully understand what else they effect, is far fetched at this point.

Good stock purchase right now. Long terms gonna be huge.
Whilst doing research at med school, I had my own private project by experimenting with genes. I tweaked some babies' genes to be disease-resistant and today as teens, they never got ill nor have they any concept of what it is like to be unwell. I also modified their sirtuin 6 gene to slow down aging after reaching the end of their teens. So when they reach around 20, hopefully they will remain as youthful even past 100. In other words, providing all goes well and they don't get run over in an accident, I don't see why they can't live perpetually.
How you pick up thier gene?

As someone who suffers from genetic disease, I personally am looking forward to how this technology is going to be used in medicine. But it should never be used to make designer babies and it should only aply to a person who consented to their DNA to be changed not to the future generations that had no say.
I hope this happens for you and many others but don't hold your breath about it not being used for this or for that. The best chance of it getting made is through people who are greedy and will definitely make these things happen but people like you can get the benefit of healing. it just seems like human greed is inevitable which is quite sad but this technology will help many and maybe destroy us in the end as well. darn "us" ...

Why it should never be used for designed babys ? So it is better to a have a baby with defects that will get sick, and than use the technology to fix them, or they should be disease free from the start using the technology ? Because we loose the medical and pharma establishments by doing it from the beggining ?
I think modifying grasses that cattle eat so that they can absorb/metabolize methane AND fix nitrogen (fertilize surrounding grasses) would be a great way to soak up methane and increase the amount of cattle in a piece of land... Relatedly, having large ranches upstream of landfills would also work better with methane absorbing grasses... So you have a landfill where methane is being harvested and concerted to propane. You have methane that leaks from underground gets partially absorbed by methane consuming grasses, that get eaten by cattle nearby... Maybe throw in some insects, bacteria and worms that consume plastics as well...
