Hi Bill, regarding your B1. I have the same model and same problem. I discovered it was not the large drive gear that was worn, but the brass gear on the armature was either worn out or faulty and caused the same slipping issue. I replaced the armature and it solved the problem. You don't have to search for Bachmann or Replica armatures, Mainline ones also work too. Mine came from a donor Mainline pannier tank 57xx I had spare. Other armatures that will fit are, Moguls, Manors and 66xx tanks. The large drive gears from these models will also fit the B1 too just incase. Plenty of them as spares on ebay. Hope this helps.

I have a Replica B1 which has been detailed and weathered to represent a Scottish shedded loco. I bought it new and it has run for many years on our various club layouts generally pulling 6+ coaches with the only maintenance being keeping the wheels spotless, new traction tyres and lubrication. If it failed I would buy the latest chassis for it to keep it running. I know it may need a few modifications to fit.
I had to do major surgery on the chassis of my Bachmann A1 to get the new style motor and gear installed as the original style was no longer available but it was a major improvement in its running qualities.
Extra pickups on the tenders also improves running.

Bill. I know you said you have tried everywhere - does that include Bachmann? I was amazed last year when they supplied a replacement set of split axles for a Replica Railways loco at a very reasonable price.

Actually the B1 is an early Bachmann it has "Bachmann" on the under frame. I have contacted both them and Replica to see if they have any. Cheers.

Hi Bill. Good to see a ‘Replica’ being torn down and rebuilt. I too have one of their B1’s bought new when first out and stored till now. A quick service and.... it’s as noisy as hell, but only when going forward. Stripped, cleaned and carefully reassembled, still the same. It’s as if the gears go out of mesh in this direction. Baffling.... Good luck with yours, I’ll look forward to your video. 😃

I have the same issue, quiet as a modern loco backwards but louder forwards

I have had several Mainline/Replica locks with knackered gears/motor. I too couldn't get spares so replaced the chassis with old type Bachmann chassis. I paid between £35 and £45 for the chassis, but only several types are available. They were all second hand off ebay. Some small modification was required on a few models, but should make a good video.
I even converted a tender drive Airfix Royal Scot, but was a lot more work!!!
    Great videos!!!

I have similar dramas with a number of Bachmann locos. I combined superglue and heatshrink around the axle. You have to sand it with wet and dry till it fits in the axle bearings, the grease it with a non petroleum based grease. The 2 locos I tried this on have lasted 4 years or so. Very fiddly though.

If you have an axle split - other than the drive axle of course - you can replace it with a section of Biro pen refill. I fixed an ebay J72 that way 10 years ago and it's still going strong

Enjoyed the video 📹 I got replacement axles for my Manor class from Peters spares. I have several of these split chassis 🚂 locomotives. Regrettably I don't have parts for that one.

The b1 motor and chassis assembly are a bachmann design. You may be able to find replacement parts at their website. Enjoy the channel. Art states

@Alan wragsdale yes it was a very cheap design probably from the Tyco line. I was not aware of the upgraded can motor. Thanks, art

Hi Bill, There is a Bachmann B1 chassis on sale on Ebay now with a best offer and buy it now option. Look for 'Bachmann Class B1 4-6-0 loco chassis & motor LNER Green wheels -' Unfortunately the wheels are green. But you could use your original wheels. It is priced at £24.99 plus £4.10 postage. But as I said it does have a best offer option. There is also a chassis block for sale. The blurb does say it is in good working order. Search for '+++Chassis block and motor from Bachmann/Replica 11012 B1 class "1000" SPRINGBOK'. It does not say if the gears are present. You would have to ask. It is priced at £19.99 with a buy it now option. Postage is £3.68. That's the best I can find for you at the moment.
Bill I believe that the springs on the middle wheels is as you say to help with connectivity. But also to help run over poorly laid track that may have been laid on carpet etc.
As for your plastic hubs. The problem you are having with them is a known problem with Bachmann wheels. It was a major problem when Bachmann redid the chassis the 4mt's and replaced the solid Mainline wheels with the ones with the plastic inserts. The problem is that over time the plastic expands and pushes out causing the problem you described. On the 4mt and other engines it also warped the metal wheels. This caused the engines to run with a decided wobble. Most people just cut out the plastic inserts and painted the wheels what ever colour they needed. I believe that one reason they did this was it originally made changing the colours of the wheels easier. They did not need painting. Just a different colour of plastic was used.

Have you tried sourcing gears from the RC car taxes? Amazon sells bags of replacement gears, in an assortment of sizes. You need to replace that skeletonlzed bull gear with a solid one, it was the best change I made, to fix a Bachman US trolley with the same motor and bull gear as your B1.

And if they can't, you asking may just prompt them to look at making the gears themselves, as they do with countless other now-obsolete parts (anything with a PS- prefix!).

Cool glasses 😎 I could do with a pair like especially when I am Trying to glue Two pieces of card together or anything fiddly I'm also planning on getting a few Chocolate and cream coaches and I'm also thinking about getting two lima Diesel locomotives a Class 52 western D1013 western ranger and a BR blue Class 33 or maybe a BR blue Class 50 No. 50013 "AGINCOURT" one day when I have my own house and enough space to build a bigger layout I will create my own UA-cam channel and upload Videos of my layout and I might do Videos where other UA-camr's oo gauge locomotives run on my layout and one of my locomotives runs on their layout a bit like what the heritage railways in real where locomotives visit other heritage railways for gala specials
