Heathrow Airport 2004 - 2013 The Last of the Glory Years....? -- Plane spotting

  • The final part of my photo video series brings us up to the era when I switched from taking photos to filming with a video camera.
It shows what I consider the end of the good days at Heathrow Airport, when there was still a perfect fusion of new planes/classic planes and a good dose of VIP action!
2005 perfectly sums up what Heathrow used to be all about, I would show up and be surprised by something special!
Although I still film at Heathrow occasionally, the airport has lost it's soul and now is a shell of it's former self. I hope this 5 part series of videos keeps the memories alive and reminds people of the greatness that was once London Heathrow Airport.

I love this! Oh how I miss the early 2000s...especially with my Virgin Atlantic 744s G-VFAB, obviously the best of the 747s, really really miss the 4 engine 4 long haul days...Thank you for the throwback

Officially my favourite video on youtube!!! Absolute miss and think about these days, I share your sentiment about 2005. We have really lost our way now sadly :( Thank you for making this, really keeps those old vibes going strong!

Thanks Adam, it was a real labour of love for me to produce this video and the others in the series. Your comment made my day! This is why we do what we do, to keep these great memories alive.

You're very welcome David. I was having a conversation with another member on my London Area Aviation group on Facebook and I want to echo what was said here.
Spotting before FlightRadar24 was always a surprise! Now that element of surprise is gone as you now what's coming in already and specials don't really give you the same excitement anymore when you know it's inbound. It's a shame as FR24 is such a good tool. Problem is these days we rely on it too much to only go for the good stuff. I remember 12 hour days around LHR in 2002-2005 watching and waiting for every arrival just in case the 'one' came in. That anticipation of a special, and then one coming in out of the blue, being able to catch it and feeling great about it .. yeah, that's what spotting was all about!!! The newer generation of spotters just will never experience that and that's a little sad. The buzz and excitement made it what it is.

100% with you on that Adam. That element of surprise now no longer exists in so many other areas of our lives - we are saturated nowadays with too much information in aviation and otherwise... You can't beat the thrill of surprise! Like my videos surprised you!! LOL

Really enjoyed this one David. Your music choices are phenomenal and fit the images perfectly. My father and I went to LHR for the first time for spotting in summer 2008 from Texas. I was only 14 at the time but the memories now of spending time with my dad and photographing some real classics from the Iran 741 to the Biman DC-10 are making me a bit emotional! Really great times. We got to go back in 2010 and 2011 and I went on my own in 2014 and 2015. I've photographed many of the same aircraft you have great images of, all at LHR. i've been to countless other Euro airports but nothing holds up to the magic and warmth of LHR. Been fortunate enough to have even flown on some of these great classics you have images of, all from LHR. The likes of the Iran A300, Kuwait A300, Kuwait 747, etc. Thanks for this nice memento. Bill

Hi Bill, thanks so much for your kind words about my Heathrow videos, at the time I took these pictures I knew that many of these planes were at the end of their useful lives (or would not be around for too many more years) and I was glad to capture them on film. I would agree 100% on what you say about Heathrow, it does have a magic about it and I think that shows in these videos. Cheers

What a story 'WillScary', I was 13 coming on 14 when I first came to Heathrow to log the planes, known as just London Airport then, and you mentioning your Dad made me think of my own Dad with pride!

So many fantastic photos, they bring back memories for me, especially the Star Alliance Singapore 747, which I flew SIN-LHR once. The 90s and early 2000s were the era of the 747, and you managed to catch the best looking ones!

Another great watch. Like I said on your Concorde/Trident removal/BA 747-100 retirement video these need to be printed into a book. You’ve been around for so many key events.

MrFlashjet - The Heathrow Airport Archive, MrFlashjet - The Heathrow Airport Archive, I have sent your concorde retirement/BA 747 retirement video to an airline pilot on twitter with about 8 thousand followers, he shared it this morning so hopefully you’ll pick up some views from that. I would certainly buy such a book if you made one!

I saw an IL96 take off over my office window when I worked near Hatton Cross, banked hard right and I though it was an A340 until I could actually see the full thing.. what a beauty... no footage or records of it anywhere online but I remember it clear as day, wasn’t Cubana or Aeroflot neither I don’t think....

I watched this again last Saturday with a beer and you have a way with videos and adding great music. This was my best half hour last weekend, I was sent watching this. Fantastic photos, some new to me, some brought back great memories and most of all made me realise just how much Heathrow had changed so much since those days and that was before Covid! I reiterate that I thought this was a really classy video, seems unbelievable that you are not a professional and hand hold your camera whilst filming!!

Thanks so much Glyn, when I read comments like this it makes it all worth it. Yes, these really are days we will NEVER see again, how glad I was to be part of it all back then.

Another absolutely superb video, the worst bit of it was it ended, I just did not want it to end, I want part 6!!!! So many questions to ask, how I covet some of those A340s, no longer flying to Heathrow and the Jumbos. Did that Pulkovo TU-154 really come in during 2009?! I missed it! Those Ethiopian 737 and Air India Express are fantastic to see at Heathrow! And the first commercial flight of an A380 into Heathrow occurred on my birthday!

    • @MrFlashjet
      @MrFlashjet  7 років тому +1

Cheers Glyn, Part 6 is ALL of my moving videos! You have 500+ to watch! LOL That's your home work for the next 3 years!!
This was the A340 era and I was glad I had the foresight to nail a lot of them, moving images as well (all 19 Virgin 346 in one video, plus lots of the 343 too). We had Pulkovo 154's for several years on and off during 2003/4 - 2010, the Ethiopian was a VIP flight and the AI Express was a delivery flight that took off at 5pm on a Sunday afternoon and it was packed with photographers on that fence!! Glory days! VT-AXC was also delivered through Heathrow but went out late at night... A delivery flight taking off on a Sunday evening nowadays just wouldn't happen! BAA/HAL want all the slot money from BIG carriers, in those day's it was just the Terminal shops.

2009 was in the days when I did not get the due lists on e-mail, it was just hit and miss with me then. It must have been quite a sight seeing all the photographers at the fence, I suppose those good old days the powers that be did not move us all on!
Yes, BAA/HAL's greed mean we miss out on most deliveries, diversions and cargo flights although the QR and CL have gone against the grain so all is not lost I suppose. Yes, I have many hours of videos to watch plus I will watch all 5 epics again!!
