      Weather has been very nice recently, the squirrel i started pretty late but that was a pretty sunny day as well :). good weather for the time of year, in april we can basicly get any kind weather here, it can be extremely soft but we could get -5 Celsius again next week just as easy.
      Im a little late but i hope you had a happy easter too :D

    Really liked how you used the 'Y' shape to get the squirrels body. Very impressive...may have mentioned earlier that I plan to break out the chainsaw work once I get back out to West Coast(without the blindfold of course!). Couldn't but help noticing the massive slabs in the background. Nice, thanks for the video and tunes~ :-)!

      I like to let the wood speak to me. this one was either going to be a small rooster or a squirrel :).. Kinda need to be creative like that, we dont have that much big old trees and the ones we have we are very protective of here in the netherlands.. so no big blocking for me :D or at least not often.. so i always try to let the shape of the log work in my favor i guess.
      if you want i probably have a sprocket /bar and chain combo i could send your way, for me they are just some parts i will not likely ever use again, just a thought.
      you would still need to get the chainsaw to put them on though but it is at least a pretty cheap 25cc china mass production model saw that should never really cost anything over 100 bucks,.. so that could be interesting for you perhaps. if you feel capable of changing the sprocket it could be a pretty cheap detailing saw for you and i would be happy to send you the bits required :D.
      the giant log in the background still needs to become something but every time i have an idea i change my mind the next day, it has a giant hollow inside and it must become something safe for horses to jump over as well, so no hollow bits a hoof or anything can get stuck in etc.. it has become quite the eyesore for me at this point lol.. convenient to put stuff on at least :D
      I tried sharing the website where i get the music from these days before through youtube replies but i think youtube just kept autodeleting my replys if i included it, not sure why, but i can email it some time if you like, most free to use random music lacks a bit of soul :)
      take care my friend

    I forgot, there, did you carve with a full log? Is it the line that separates the body from the tail that will prevent it from splitting?

    • @MathieusChainsawCarvings
      @MathieusChainsawCarvings  Рік тому +1

      Hi Sophie, it is indeed 1 log, a y shape where the limbs have started to grow together where the 2 limbs come together, i could see after 1 of the first cuts that the inside is not completely grown together, this is that line you were wondering about, im happy enough it somewhat dissapeared after torching it.
      always hard to tell on the outside with these kind of logs :)
      Pretty sure this one will crack at some point both in the tail as well as the body since those will act like seperate logs both having their own pith on the top, But hopefully it wont be too bad, its going to one of my sisters as a present, so at least i can always come back and fix it later!
      Ill see if i can provide an example in the future as well how to prevent cracks using that technique

      @@MathieusChainsawCarvings Some chainsaw carvers cut a line vertically and where it is least visible, precisely to remove the pressure from the marrow so that the log does not split!

    • @MathieusChainsawCarvings
      @MathieusChainsawCarvings  Рік тому

      @@SoeCarpeDiem exactly that :). wouldnt work on this particular carving i think it would probably look worse then just letting it split where it wants to. but for like a bird where the wings come together its easy enough to make a cut in between, and it doesnt need to be done with the chainsaw either, with a japanese pullsaw its easy enough to make a thin cut ,after drying it would still be easy enough to glue in a little shim if the cut opens up a lot. at least u get a uninterupted cut from top to bottom.
      for instance when i carve like a rabbit they always split in the front, between the front legs and then the head will likely check somewhere too, with these squirrels holding a nut it does prevent that a little i think, as long as it doesnt dry to fast :)
      Best thing imo however is building up a nice wood stash if possible, giving the wood the proper amount of time to dry out slowly before carving it, first in first out kinda thing :)

      @@MathieusChainsawCarvings A little trick from a friend who also has his channel on Youtbe: look at the top of the log and mark the cracks that form, then choose the side where they will be less obvious! 🙃
