So I am a former member of the ADF, my daughter who is completing Year 12, looked at the ADF, she went through multiple stages in the recruitment cycle, however she stopped the process, the experience of recruitment was lacking she was looking at getting an Intel spot in the Army, which she was on track to get, she spoke with multiple recruiters and then concurrently she got uni offers from 3 universities and she took that option.
Universities for preselection before Year 12 completion is a thorough but quicker process than the ADF for specialist roles.
That's why the numbers are down, the process for recruitment is clunky, you get multiple recruiters looking at your file not one point of contact.
Universities are taking out Aussie kids first before the end of Year 12, there process if thorough but efficient, they can get a conditional offer or a unconditional offer based n Year 11 and Year 12 results.
So its it not that Aussie kids don't want to serve its the process from recruitment in ADF is not dynamic and quick enough compared to university.

Previous generations upheld self-sacrifice as a virtue, and something that heroes embodied.
Men and women were self-sacrificing and felt the dignity of it.
Service wasn't a degrading activity to engage in, and taking and posting selfies wasn't required to validate them.
This generation of young adults is the Instagram and tiktok generation, which promotes narcissism as a virtue.
What impact does it have on building a person's character?
Virtue-signalling is considered enough by many people in society, not just the 20 year olds (I'm looking at you Anthony Albanese 😠).
Furthermore, anyone who takes offence at being "misgendered" or having the "wrong pronouns" used when being spoken to, does not have the mental hardness or resilience required to be in uniform and able to fight a real enemy.

Why would individuals be compelled to defend a nation where they're made to feel as they don’t belong like outsiders? The recent tradition of the Indigenous 'Welcome to Country' may be well-intentioned, but, it might inadvertently emphasize division rather than unity. The current government's messaging seems to further this sense of separation, lacking the essence of national pride. It's becoming increasingly challenging for our youth to find volunteer opportunities. Many programs have age restrictions, and by the time they're eligible, it might be too late to instill a sense of service and commitment in them. We need to reshape this narrative and create more inclusive opportunities, ensuring every citizen, Indigenous or otherwise, feels a deep sense of belonging. Only then will our youth be inspired to stand up for our nation. We need to reignite the pride in the nation and celebrate our shared identity as Australians.
