    I'm a 5 year served chippie, all the old boys wore aprons in the joiners shop and were perfectonists, not quick, but bloody neat, just like the old brickie and yourselve Ben, couple of legends ❤

      @@thomasgriffiths5594 I worked sites for about 16 years. Done day work and price. The only thing that I thought was a joke… bricklayers thinking they can start a gang and pay us all day rate 😂😂. Done a 3/1 for a wile and we all split 25% the hoddy earnt every penny. Bricklayers think they are special for some strange reason

    Nice to see some care in the work. I'm currently helping to restore the concrete mural that's outside Sainsbury's in Town Hall Square. Someone (before us) had made a right mess of repointing the bricks, I think they flicked a load of cement at the cracks and walked away.

      he was due and deserved a silver trowel, a labourer handed him a bag of silver spoon sugar! that sussed him;

      They have to lay bricks like maniacs as they get 60-70 p a brick I charge £2 so can plod along and still make a good wage.

    Think I worked in Windsor with him and while I was working for a builder from Eton Wick 35 years ago!

      Remember being a Labourer in 1990 only 16 years old my first job....the brickies got a flyer Friday they forgot to clean the mixer....so my job Monday morning with a hammer chisel cleaning out the bastard mixer

      Think you’ll find English Garden Wall bond is three course of stretchers to one course of headers, probably just a slip of the tongue by the old bricklayer but no taking anything away from a very nice wall especially with shit LBC bricks

    Hi Ben just a quick question I'm a bricklayer in Guernsey Channel Islands and we use a lot of concrete 6 x 4 6 x 9 bricks do you use many of them in the UK to build houses or do you just use standard London bricks

      We pretty much lay standard size bricks 215x100x65 or blocks 440x215

      @@Theoldbricklayer thanks Ben it must make work a lot easier in some ways because you can lay more bricks a bit more faster than we can obviously. But as you may know we're also deal with a lot of Guernsey blue granite on a lot of houses over here. I'm currently working in a house that was built in 1786 and there is a lot of granite coins as we have to try and keep it as original as possible but it's been turned into flats so there's only a couple of brick walls going up. If only I could show you photos it's a lovely place.

      In the U.K. we have to lay the bricks frog up. Other country’s are frog down
      These bricks have the biggest voids you can get so laying them frog down would be impossible to get the beds full

      I was at that college south borough St John’s rd didn’t go in that pub all the tutors were in there I was there 1976 to 1977 great college Derek hook hook was our tutor and very good never forgot it one of the best times of my life 👌

      I didn’t go to college I got my dad to train me and got a blue nvq via the back door . Was driving the telehandler when the assessor turned up he made me lay 1 block and that was it 😂

      He prefers the heat from the log fire so will treat him to a few ton of good quality seasoned logs

    Whs silver trowel? How old is the old bricklayer?

      Silver trowel was an award from back in the day at college. He’s 74

      @@Theoldbricklayer Thanks for reply, love his sense of humour, on my level. I am 64 awarded silver trowel in 1979, unfortunately had to retire early this year due to illness, that’s why I find time now to watch these videos. Keep up the good work on film and site, nice to see someone still producing skilled quality workmanship, standards have really fallen in recent years.

      It’s a wall repair so yes it’s what charge … it was £2.30 a brick labour only

    Great workmaship have to say also down south tge bricks are lovely to work with when i served my time in scotland the english used to call out bricks Bast--d bricks as they was the worse brick in the world

      I think our bricks are crap usually all bent and twisted and they charge us nearly £2 each 😂

      @@Theoldbricklayer not cheap now but ones in scotland used to be made from coal believe it or not our facing brick would have been rejected for common brick down south

      For an extension I will use my Marshall town boards but for smaller jobs I can’t be bothered putting every thing in the van
