As much as Jadzia's character was vaguely defined, and as much as Terry says she was uncertain how to play her, I always, 100% bought her as a wise old soul in a young woman's body. A wise old *playful* soul maybe, but she had a certain poise that really worked. Terry shouldn't be so hard on herself.
I think her character was a bit boring. Perfect in every way, no weaknesses. Now that isn't her fault, that was the part she was given. I believe the writers realized this about Jadzia and tried to overcompensate by focusing on Ezri's weaknesses. She was way less annoying than Kira though!
ChernobylPizza True, with the Ezri being a more fallible Dax, But I also kinda felt that was a bitchy move towards Terry, and the fans, making Dax such a flake, like they neutered a strong creature , like took her down a few pegs. And then no Jadzia in the last Episode flash backs, it all read to me as a viewer as a pissy move.
ChernobylPizza To be fair, a being with centuries of life experience would be pretty flawless, since you would learn from all those past mistakes. I think that's why she worked well as a side character. A trill that wasn't under two or three generations old would be very hard to write as a lead character without throwing in some very obvious gimmick or trauma. Also, Kira was great, not annoying at all, not even in season 1.

I met Terry Farrell at Dragoncon one time. I told her how the episode Equilibrium was very an important episode for me. I know it was a group effort with the cast, crew, writers, and director. Her performance made an impact on me. When I told her this she got up from the table and gave me a hug. The experience almost brought me to tears.
Right on! A brilliant character played so captivatingly well! She could be endearing, scary, intense, and devilishly fun all in one wonderfully complex character. Quark and Bashir weren't the only ones in love with Jadzia Dax.
Terry, you nailed it. You were definitely one of my favorite characters on that show. It wouldn’t have been DS9 without you, and I cried when she died.
I am ABSOLUTELY 100% looking forward to seeing this documentary and hope that it is about 5 hours long, at the very least I sincerely hope there is a similar documentary for Voyager AND Enterprise in the works.
Whatever she did, it WORKED. Rewatching DS9 she comes across as so layers and lived in, powerful but vulnerable, and most importantly a complicated living person.
Well that little bit shocked me. Dax is one of my all time favorite characters in Star Trek. Smart, funny, gorgeous, wise, playful. Maybe Terry Farrell thought Dax wasn't well defined -- sometimes we are our own worst critics -- but I thought she did a great job bringing that character to life and making her so memorable.
This was SO GOOD!!!! I watched it last night with a bunch of friends I hadn't met yet… The time, work, and quality of this documentary is a reflection on the DS9 series. From the funny re-read by the actors of the initial reviews of the show… to the thoughtful design and organization of the go-find-me names at the end… This was sensational. I can't wait to buy the bluray!
I feel so bad for her because i really wanted her to be there at the very end of the series, and although in a sense her character was (in a manner of speaking if you know what i mean) the person and charm of the (Terry Farrell’s) Dax was missing at the end of the series. I know there was contract and personality issues she may have had behind the scenes but I really missed her in the final season and feel that “Ezri” just did not have enough time to develop any kind of memorable character ark as DS9 was too late in the game for show to develop any sort of effective story for Ezri which was not her fault. It just makes me feel sad that Terry Farrell is truly done with the show as she deserved better then that, we the fans will never know how things would have been different in that final season of DS9 if she would have continued as her character.
The one Jadzia scene I remember is when she was on the Defiant and there was some sort of explosion. Julian was helping evacuating the section and he was ready to leave the area and she called out to him. She said his name and he went to her. The rest of the episode they are trapped in the damaged section. I really liked the scene. They had good chemistry together.
I know Dax and DS9 is what she'll always be best known for, but for me Terry Farrell has always been Joey from Hellraiser III. Loved her since that film (damn shame she never returned for another sequel in that series). Still looks amazing and she's sorely missed from acting, though it's understandable given that she wanted to focus on being a mother, which is very noble.
Like others, I say kudos to Terry Farrell and indeed to those writers- they may have failed to help her define the character, but their scripts and her work DID give us a well realized character, and a very good one.
I always believed she was Yoda's brain in Grace Kelly's body from her very first moment in the pilot when she played that frightened girl getting the symbiote put in her, closing her eyes and then reopening them again with a sudden look of transcendental bliss on her face. It was beautifully done.
Terry Farrell did an incredible job. I felt the freshness and the flint. The experience and the youth.M. Jadzia Dax felt like a complete, continuous character. And of my favourites in ST.
And it is because of all the wonderful characters and amazing talents behind them. it is the only show I am aware of where the secondary/recurring cast is every bit as defined, important, expansive, and identifiable as the main cast,... if not moreso.
Honestly I always loved how Terry played her. She may be insecure about it, but I never had a problem believing that she had lived multiple lifetimes. In fact, her carefree nature really solidified that for me because if you’d live all of that life, you’d have learned that being positivity and a bit of fun aren’t wasted of time.
She may have been uncertain in the role but I bought it hook line and sinker. Such a great character. I always thought it would have been great to see DS9 characters make cameos in the movies
Terry Ferrell as Dax was one of the best things about that show. She was wonderful to watch. I think the episode where she died is the point at which the whole Star Trek franchise began its continuous downward slide. God I miss that show :)
Honestly, the difference in quality between Blu-rays and DVDs is not that great. It's definitely not like when DVDs outran VHS. THAT was a HUGE difference.

I've always wondered if there was awkwardness between Terry Farrell and Nicole de Boer. I mean, Nicole didn't get Terry fired (and was brought in after talks between Terry and the producers broke down), and I'd think that Terry could understand that as a working actor, one goes where the work is, but I can see there being some discomfort between the two.

Yea, it isn't shattering news she just didn't have the knack to play the role for her character the way it was written with that multiple life time experience thing. I never once felt that conveyed through her scenes even though she said the words. It would've been better if they just made her character a regular human or alien who was smart and athletic. Can't see why they had to make it more complicated than that.
But I think that Terry Farrell did a good job at playing Dax because I think that she pulled it off playing someone who was old and mature and wise and at peace. She had that "air" about her character. 👍
