  • The master in an excellent performance. Jimmy was not just a guitarist, he was a musician using a guitar.

I love what happens with the video in the second 0,23... It's a "defect" of the video, but it modulates the pitch in the perfect moment. Sounds as if Jimmy is using a whammy bar haha

Does anyone know what venue this was? And possibly the year?

It was Jimmy Raney and Cal Collins with Tyrone Wheeler on bass and Bruce Morrow on drums (some refer to it as the Jimmy Raney and Cal Collins Quartet) at the Actors Theatre, Louisville, Kentucky 1987. Maybe it was in january, I'm not sure about that. Jimmy and Cal played each some pieces without the other.

I am trying to use Aebersoyd and learn this tune guitar solo but what a relief, obviously it doesn't have to be played as quick as in the method (and as in a studio) !

Learning should be done slowly, very slowly. But at the same time a method sets a possible goal: how fast it eventually could be played. The reason is that developing speed is not only a matter of patience, much practice and time. You must be able to verify that the fingerings and technique you use will enable you to get there if that is what you want. If your technique is not good, you will never be able to reach that goal. But finally it's all a matter of personal taste. In my opinion much jazz is played too fast. Much beauty gets lost, especially on the guitar. If you have to tell something nice, do it slowly, so that people can understand you. That's why I like this video of Jimmy.
