Shirley's a beautiful soul with a unique beautiful voice so moving and so suited to the English tradition, there is no one better.... I heard good singer in their own right, but none match Shirley.....

Original written by Irish soldiers fighting against Napoleon, almost as many fighting for him. In the 18th & 19th Centuries a close or majority of the british army were Irish.
Reality of most colonized impoverished terrorized nations.
    But Shirley would not know!
Whether she actively knew or not, fact is she rips off a lot of ancient Irish ballads and airs. Likely ignorant of it after listening to he talk of white english slaves and indentured to America! pitiful ignorance of history of who were the main slaves and supposed indentured sent!
To be fair to her, in Hanoverian modern rewrite of history the Irish were purposely written out.

'Irishware' pops up on lots of Shirley Collins videos spouting his incoherent rubbish.
For some reason he seems to have issues with Shirley - but he (obviously a he) clearly knows nothing about her nor indeed about folk music - all the songs on this album are English.
      A nutter.

You cannot “rip off” a folk song. True-Shirley has sung a lot of Irish songs-likewise many Irish singers have sung songs with their ultimate origins in England. Same in Scotland and in Wales to varying degrees each. Political division does not prevent exchange, how do you think so much Black influence got into American old-time & country, and White influence in the blues?

At the time when Shirley and Dolly were writing their music, there was a great wealth of beautiful Irish ballads and not much of the English folk songs…I love Irish music tradition but these two ladies are two of the best
