I am not a aeronautical knowledgeable , but they fly over where I live in San Diego county all the time. I knew two of the test pilots that were testing the Osprey in Oceanside California. But when it comes to the Osprey why not put the lifting tilt rotors separate from the wings? In other words, wings to fly with, tilting routers to lift by. Here in San Diego County there was day by day reports on the failures of the Osprey. I lived in Oceanside and it was tragic to watch the osprey and the crashes. God bless them!

There were a lot of Marines in the complex and so I would hear about the accident from time to time, there are a lot of them in those days. P.S. The ospreys never landed at Miramar it was too dangerous for them to fly over residential homes. They tested them on the west side of Freeway five in special concrete barricades with the Pacific ocean on the other side.
@@stephenrocks7004 you could be correct about not flying over residential areas but at least in the last 5 years you can see ospreys landing at the base quite often. still a san diego resident that lives basically behind the base in scripps ranch and works in miramar.
the sad thing about this gun is its downtime because now they have developed missiles which multiple head split - so as it approaches the target it becomes 4 or 6 targets coming at you and as the gun can take them out fast it is the second missile coming behind it that is the problem - the navy can engage multiple incoming targets but when they start splitting this is the issue - the only sure thing is is to have a second unite ready or take over but they have not updated their ships in the last 20 years - yes they have one aft and one forward of the ship but still not enough to deal with split head missiles - if anyone remembers WW2 when our ships had over 200 gunners on both sides of an aircraft carriers but it could not stop kamikaze in heavy numbers pouncing on the aircraft at once - we are back to the same scenario again

Sure nothing can come near the ship - but as I mentioned there is ane missile head that splits into 4 ---heads, as it approaches the target, if you have 2 on you with one delayed by a few 30 or 50 seconds your ammo is pent and reload downtime, is going to put the ship in the danger zone, the west has developed that - but it could be copied by the enemy - and the practice of having 4 catlin guns on the ship mid-ship (port) starboard and 1 aft 1 Fwd is stupid upper brass they need to make it 6 4 mid-ship it will increase survivability
@@philandrawis6232 I was usually working in CIC and never really had a chance to get into the ship's gunnery. Where I played a role was in vectoring CAP (Combat Air Patrol) and our guy's up there were very aggressive. I'd hate to be a 1980's era adversary and try to get through our CAP. No other Navy did CAP like my Navy. Those F-14's and later on, the Super Hornet were nothing to mess with. I'm guessing that our guns had more to do with protection against anti-ship missiles than with aircraft.
Our unit once repelled from some UH1H at Bowman Field in Louisville KY but we were forbidden to fire blanks to represent a hot LZ because the EPA did not want the noise. Our officer said later, the first casualty in the next conflict would be the EPA. There are times the keepers of the keys in the Washington Distribution Center have been educated beyond their ability to think.
It's sad to see the sailor throwing the protective cardboard box of cartridges into the sea, we still don't know what it means to recycle in the most powerful navy in the world.

I hope others noted the significance of the slightly less than 4 minute time taken to reload the Phalanx gun. That's the window of opportunity the enemy has to get in. The only other thing you need to know is how long the gun can fire before it needs reloading. Given the rate of fire (4,500 rounds per minute), that can't be very long. Basically, an enemy just needs to launch cheap decoys at the ship for a minute or two then send in the real thing while the defenders are reloading.

In modern warfare i doubt the enemy would be firing many missiles- but those missiles would be incredibly effective at sinking a ship. Either the Phalanx clears the skies or one gets through and sinks the ship. There won't be a need for a panicked reload.

He should be landing at full military power ( and might go to afterburners), so that if he misses all of the 4 wires he can make sure he can get airborne again, it’s called a “ Bolter”!!

That is a horrible flaw. Why doesn't the ammo come from below with about 10,000 rounds and have manual loading as a back up.

I've always wondered how long the Phalanx is out of service while reloading. That would be four LONG minutes during an active engagement.
