    You can just plug the 4 - pin connector from your PSU into the 8 pin CPU power slot on the motherboard and it will work fine without the adapter. Take a look in the manual book that came with your motherboard and it should say which side to plug 4 - pin connector in on.

    Gigabyte motherboards have an explanation in the manual for this - you need a 500w +psu and only use the four pins on the right hand side of the socket

      A 4-pin can be put, by itself, into an 8-pin CPU power socket and the machine boot up and run. It will give it what power it can, and if the CPU draws more than that, it will shut the system down. If it shuts down when you start doing intensive stuff, just underclock the CPU.5 Apr 2014

Apparently, the latter should also be connected to a free (= no HDDs / other equipment attached) PSU line with a Molex connector on it.

      It is merely a stepping up, some sort of transformer to me... Whereby 1 stream of energy into 2 streams, but doing that constantly for gaming and a CPU requiring higher power may strain the 4pins wiring overheating it... then with wear and tear comes resistance issues, then instability issues may threaten to damage the CPU and other parts.
      It can work, but unless you get a 12gen CPU just to watch DVDs... I mean who will spend so much money on a system requiring 8pins power to do such underpower jobs?
      I am getting a psu with 8pins+24pins myself to play safe.

  • @Mobin92

    Chances are very high that you don't need that adapter. Just plug in the 4 pin plug into one side of the 8 pin socket. The individual pins have special shapes, so it only fits in the right way. That adapter might actually cause more problems, because of higher resistance those extra connections.

    Doesn't work to me, with and without adapter 🤔 maybe I need a power supply with extra more watts

  • @jasonsmith7902
    @jasonsmith7902 5 років тому +3

    Research needs to be done to ensure the power supply has enough wattage for the entire system. Cheap power supplies lie about their wattage and 12V rail output so a lot of times a quality 450W or 500W powers supply from a good brand like Seasonic will actually have more power output than a 600W unit from a cheap brand like logysis or Raidmax. Cooler Master's website has a great power supply calculator that i use for every build that i do. I did want to mention tho that if your power supply has the proper wattage and 12V output but only has a 4pin CPU power connector and your motherboard has an 8 pin CPU power connector, in almost ALL builds you will be just fine plugging in that 4pin connector from the power supply to the half of the motherboard's CPU power connector. You just need to check the connector end and match it up to the correct half of the CPU power connector on the mobo. (1) 4pin power cable from a PSU is rated for 144W and and 8 pin power cable from the PSU is exactly double at 288W. So as long as the TDP of the CPU is below 144W you will be fine. And nowadays, CPUs are being made with lower TDPs. If you had something like an AMD FX-8350 which is rated at 125W and wished to OC it then yes you would need the full 8 pins. But in most cases the CPU TDP is 100W or lower and would operate perfectly normal and be fully functional on a single 4 pin. Tomshardware.com has tons of "solved" questions relating to this exact topic. Toms hardware also has a wonderful list of power supplies grouped into several tiers from best to worst. Not only do low end brands lie about their power output but they also lack many of the safety features found in quality units. Those two can add up to a disaster, since a customer may do his/her homework and look up the power supply calculator online and lets say the calculator calculates that a 650W PSU is needed. The customer then buys a cheap PSU which claims to be rated at 650W but actually only puts out 475W. If that customers PC is going over that 475W actual output it can short out that cheap PSU which lacks the proper built in protections and end up with a best case scenario of a dead PSU (which will most likely kill the CPU, GPU, etc on its way out) or a worst case scenario of a house fire

    notice the adaptor is white and the 8 pin on the mother board is black well there's a reason for that.
    It is very easy to confuse the 8 pin version with the very similar-looking EPS 8 pin 12-volt cable.
    You can plug a 4 pin 12 volt power cable into an 8 pin EPS motherboard connector but there's no guarantee that it will work. If the motherboard expects only one 12 volt rail then a 4 pin 12 volt cable may work. If the motherboard expects two 12 volt rails (many dual CPU motherboards require one 12 volt rail per CPU) then it won't work. Even if the motherboard works with a 4 pin 12 volt cable, you are still only providing half of the current carrying capacity which would be provided by an 8 pin EPS cable. That can overheat both the motherboard connector and 4 pin cable. Scorched or melted connectors can be a result. A motherboard which has the 8 pin EPS connector expects a lot of current and you are taking a serious risk by plugging in a 4 pin cable. The 4 pin cable only fits at one end of the 8 pin EPS motherboard connector so you can't plug it in improperly. That is, it only fits into one end of the motherboard connector unless you force it. If the cable doesn't go into the socket easily then you're probably trying to plug it into the wrong end. But then again, it's not a good idea to try to run with a 4 pin cable in an 8 pin motherboard anyway.
    The 6+2 PCI Express power cable is made up of two pieces: a 6 pin piece, and a 2 pin piece. If you put the two pieces together then you have a full 8 pin PCI Express power cable. But if you split the connector into two parts then you can plug the 6 pin part into the older 6 pin PCI Express connector and leave the 2 pin part unplugged. That way, your power supply only needs to have one 6+2 cable to be compatible with both 6 pin and 8 pin PCI Express connectors.

      They only provide 12V to the CPU. The extra pins are just so there are more cables, to conduct more power without the cables getting hot. Unless you are doing some crazy overclocking, you can just plug in the 4 pin directly into the 8 pin socket (there is one side where if fits easily, and one where it doesn't).

  • @Blurko17
    @Blurko17 Рік тому

    The problem with this adapter is that it does not increases the amount of power provided to the CPU. A 4 pins connector provides 186 W. and at the end of this 8 pins adapter you still get 186 W. The only difference is that those 186 W. are delivered throu 8 lines instead of 4 lines, so that the lines of the motherboard are less stressed.
    You can plug the 4 pins connector to the 8 pins socket without problems !!!
    If you want to encrease the amount of power provided to the CPU you can take 2 12V. cables from the 6 pins connector and 2 ground cables and make an additional 4 pins connector for the CPU. But that´s not needed if you are not doing overclocking.

      @@Da_Sage I´m not an expert nor nothing like that. I´m just a common PC user, ok ? But I have some experience and a lot of logical thinking capacity. I´d recommend you to plug the Core i5 4690 and the 4pin connector to the motherboard; if this 4pins connector does not give enough current to the cpu then the PC will not start or will fail soon after starting and that will show you that you need to use the second option, which is to add 2x12v lines plus the 2ground lines.
      But, I forgot, there is a chance that the Core i5 4690 will work with only the 4pins connector but it´s temperature will be very high and also the temperature of the cables will be very high because they will work at full power all time around. So that you have to check that issue !!!
      You should chech what is the power requirements of that cpu and compare with the amount of power you are providing with both options: 1) Only the 4pins connector and 2) 4pins plus 2x12V + 2 ground lines. And remember that you should supply a surpluss of power otherwise the lines will get to hot and even burn !!!
      Ok, I think that´s all what I can recommend you !!! GOOD LOOK !!!

    Sir I brought my PC from relative and it was assembled by him only, from past few weeks it was shutting down automatically while working and PC was heating a lot, so I tried applying thermal paste and one additional fan, but it doesnt seemed differrence. I thought of removing all connections from the motherboard and re-assemble it, but It was very difficult to unplug the ATX 12 volts pin, it wasn't coming, I tried many ways to remove it but it was stuck very hard and Finally I decided to brake it off the pin which came from SMPS and put another, my mother board has 8-pin slot and the pin which was plugged to it was 4-pin and finally I broke the 4-pin and removed it from motherboard. And now my doubts are:-
    1) Why wasn't the pin coming out, is it due to any burns?
    2) Why was my PC heating a lot, is it due to less power from SMPS?
    3) Now should I change whole SMPS or just a pin?
    4) If I change pin should I use adapter?
    5) What if the slot is burnt on motherboard?
    It would be so helpful if you have solutions for me...🙏🙏🙏, and I am not a gamer, I use my PC for editing and I use softwares such as after effects, premire pro etc. I have 8GB ram, Nvidea zotac 1GB Graphics, AM3+ processor, AMD motherboard, and zebronics SMPS.

      If I am not wrong, too much power required, wear and tear increasing resistance in your wiring and metallic parts, means higher flows concentrated on some power streams...
      Since a circuit goes to various parts, some streams will naturally be constantly overloaded, and if yours is an old board, rusts or dusts and other micro impurities may increase resistance making power distribution even tougher, in order to satisfy one higher power part, larger currents needing to travel through the board along the way of lower power parts... over time, overheating is natural. Especially your psu wear and tear faster this manner.
      That is why after considering, I am not using an adapter to convert 4pins to 8pins based on the same concern.
      It can run now... for a while, but the system can blow easily later due to instability.

      It might that socket is a voltage regulator, your fan running with more intensity than before could be the result of the open four pins not being grounded.
      You’re lucky you got a signal, some MBs won’t display a video signal But will run all of the other components if all the pins aren’t filled to ground the motherboard completely.

      I am more concerned about overheating and sudden black out due to 4 into 8 pins use when gaming. Motherboard with 8 pins are for CPU with more cores, such as my i5 12400 may draw more power when gaming and board proceeds to overwhelm the 117 threshold... ... If psu pins overload and a shut down occurs, am worried that other parts also damaged.
      If no shut down, the continuous 'stepping up' of power supply through the 4 pins into 8 pins may constantly wear down the cpu... ... I am not sure.
      So after this video, I may still be getting a 650w bronze PSU to ensure balance of power distribution and prevent overload on the wiring of PSU resulting in resistance due to the heating of the wires and other units... ... Particularly when outside electric theories, dusts and humility and rusting of parts can make the entire system unstable.
      Was thinking of 2 psu to 1 system, but this above concern also haunts me.
      I read also such adapter is best not for gaming, especially for 12th gen CPU.

    This could be very dangerous , the 4 pin connector only allows up to 140W of power , if you have a CPU which draws 150W + this can cause a fire . Think of it like a hose pipe , you are putting all that pressure though a small gauge pipe ( wire)

    • @henryarchangel2921
      @henryarchangel2921 2 роки тому

      Not really. To my knowledge, the power threshold for CPU at say 117w can be thrashed by settings or boards and programs, especially gaming. Even without overclocking, such as my i5 12400 may require constant high juice for hours of gaming, means the 4pins will need to step up efforts to keep it running through the 8pins...
      Imagine a heart pumping so fast but still cannot get enough oxygen, it can only result in overheating and damages to the entire circuit... ...
      Unless you get a CPU requiring 8 pins to do underpowered jobs which say, a dual core can do... but why then get a powerful CPU in the first place when it isn't cheap to do so.

      Blah blah I've been in the same boat, it comes down to Price. Go for a new architecture, if you're on a budget, remember never to spend money on year+ old tech. So, in the 100-150$ budget. You can get a dual core pentium g4560, an i3-7100 or 7400. Or get an AMD Ryzen, whichh absolutely stumps intels budget line up by a good margin. Better performance from multi-threaded applications and it even has a much sleeker looking heatsink and fan (silent as hell). Only bad thing i would say is it doesn't have integrated graphics. So you 100% will need a GPU of any kind, a minor deal cuz DUH people get gpus anyway. Get either the AMD R 1200 or 1300x again, based on what you can afford, or go for the Ryzen 5 cpu if you can. Compatible AM4 socket Mobo like the B350-A from Asus. Slap on DDR4 (Right now this RAM crap is overpriced) and BAM!
