    A very straightforward video. I read your comment below somewhere, where you answer the question I was going to ask about, the "not seeing the USB Mass Storage Device." Thank you for answering that question. It is so odd you still get that notification. So weird. But thank you for everything you shared.

    A comment I get often on this video is "I don't have a Mass storage device in Device manager." What this tells me is it's safe to unplug the device since Windows does not see it and can't damage it. However, to be on the safe side, I'd save my work and shut down then unplug the device. Now to address "I don't have a Mass storage device in Device manager" comments. If you run windows and plug in an external device into a USB slot then you have a "Mass storage device." What this probably means is the Focus assist is set to "Priority only" or "Alarms only" and not allowing the "Safe to remove device" notification to be seen. To check this go to far right on taskbar > right click the notification icon > hover over Focus assist > the selection should be "Off" to get the "Safe to remove device notification you want the next time you use your USB storage device. I found if not set to "Off" I do not get any notification. I've developed a habit to check to make sure "Focus assist" is "Off" before ejecting my storage device.

      Just shut the computer down normally, unplug the USB device, and start up the computer.

    • @Vexarax
      @Vexarax 3 роки тому

      @@NorthstarChurchOfficial I ended up being able to do it by opening task manager and on 'windows' ending task, then running new file (in the task manager) and typing 'explore.exe' in the box that opens. After that I was able to eject normally! Technology is weird. I never thought about just shutting the comp down and unplugging the device though, haha, that's a good idea! :)

    Firstly thanks for the video tutorial. However, what you showed here is basically the same as physically yanking the USB External HDD or Flash drive out because you've just "possibly" interrupted the process where it may still have been writing to the device by uninstalling the device in Device Manager. Chances are relatively low this would happen but in my opinion it's no different.
    If all the proper methods don't work [ie. Safely remove Hardware] the way its meant to, and you're still getting the "Device is currently in use" message pop-up, then wait about 10-15 minutes, don't access the drive at all and then try again, at which point, I would guess physically pulling it straight out or doing what you do in the video would most likely be safe to do.

    • @WearyCowboy

      I've found that waiting just a minute or so...& trying again, it will eject properly. Not sure why we have to wait.....when I've haven't been using anything to do with the device I'm trying to eject for quite awhile.

      Hi Tokyo Nairobi. First, make certain you have down clicked "Universal Serial Bus controllers." If you have and you don't see "USB Mass Storage Device," then it would tell me the USB drive has been disconnected and it is safe to remove your USB drive. What could be happening is your "Focus assist" is not set to "Off." If you do gaming and have set your computer to not send you notifications while playing then "Focus assist" will be turned off. You will need to turn it back on for the "safe to eject" notification to show even if you're not gaming. For some reason it doesn't reset and it took me awhile to figure it out. To turn Focus assist back on, expose your "Taskbar," right click the "Notification" icon (my notification icon is on the far right of the Taskbar). You will see "Focus assist." Hover your cursor over "Focus assist" and select "Off." Now go back to the icon list (where you tell your computer to eject the USB). If you do not see the USB plugin icon then your USB should be safe to remove. If you do see the USB icon then select it and safely eject the USB. Wait a few moments and the safe to remove notification should pop up. Hope this helps.

    so what if I dont even have that usb mass storage thing?

    • @NorthstarChurchOfficial
      @NorthstarChurchOfficial 2 роки тому

      Andreas, somewhere below I commented on your question, so I won't go into a lot of detail here. What it would mean to me is it's safe to unplug your USB device. Quickly, (if your computer setup is similar to mine), your notification icon is at the bottom right of your taskbar. The icon looks like a white square with three lines on it. Right click it. Find "Focus assist" and hover over it. A drop down will appear with four options on it. Make sure "Off" has a check mark beside it. This allows the "safe to remove device" notification to activate. You will never see the "safe to remove device" notification if "Off" is not selected. Hope this helps. Before I attempt to eject my USB devices, I make sure the "Off" is selected in Focus assist. Then I click on the eject device and get the safe to remove device notification.

  • @Vexarax

    This did not work for me as the mass storage device was somehow not in my device manager even though it was still visible on my comp and I could not eject it. I had to open task manager, click "end task" on windows, then in files (edit: at the top of the task manager) I had to run a new task called explore.exe ..then when I hit okay everything refreshed and i was able to eject the device safely!!!! So try that if this doesn't work (though I still gave this video a thumbs up as it seems to work for almost everyone!!) :)

      Hi Edwin. I'm sorry you're having difficulty. Someone else had this problem. I don't know if they resolved it or not. What operating system are you using, i.e. Windows 7, 8, 10? I use Windows 10, but other versions should be the same. I may have made the video using Windows 7. I suggest trying to "unhide" hidden files and folders to see if Mass Storage will show up. (Click Start in bottom left corner. While icons are showing type Control Panel and then Enter. Select "File Explorer Options." Click the "View" tab on top. Find "Show hidden files, folders, and drives." Click "Apply" and "OK." This will allow all hidden files and folders to be seen.) Mass Storage should not be hidden, but who knows. Also, make sure you can scroll all the way to the bottom in Device Manager. You can't get to USB Mass Storage Device without scrolling, at least I can't. The last item shown on my computer is "USB Connector Managers." I scroll by clicking once on any of the listed devices and then scrolling down. Make certain you can see "Universal Serial Bus controllers." Click the Caret beside Universal Serial Bus controllers and USB Mass Storage Device should be listed about 4 down. Hope one of these help. Try the last one (scrolling) first. It's the simplest.

      Click on "Action" at top menu and select "scan for hardware changes". Does "Mass storage device" show now? Another thought: is your specific external drive listed there. If you disable the USB port it will remain disabled the next time you attempt to use it. If you do the Uninstall it will reload the drivers and allow the USB port to work correctly if not immediately it will the next time you reboot. Your device always checks for missing drivers when it boots. Or after you uninstall you can click "Action" in the menu, then "Scan for hardware changes." Your device will scan and reinstall the driver immediately. Thanks
