My husband gives me a sax lesson... | Team Recorder

- Good idea or bad idea? My husband Jon is a professional saxophone/clarinet player, and he tried to teach me how to play too..! With mixed results... So, easy or difficult? Can I hit those low notes? Can I make a sound that doesn't resemble a goose?

Just as long as you practice safe sax every time.
Ha 🤣🤣😂😂 yes your right.
Oh my gawd
having been in marching band,.... no one was practicing safe sax.
Lol.
Too much sax and violins on youtube!
"the teeth goes on the mouthpiece"
Flashbacks of Sarah saying you SHOULD NOT do that on a recorder
That information is not entirely correct: teeth do not need to go on the mouthpiece. There are saxophone players who use double embouchure all the time, and some advanced saxophone techniques require it as well.
@@zvonimirtosic6171 they do? So I get mouthpiece patches for no reason :(
@@xadielbenejan8274 Not all mouthpiece materials are same, and not all players play with the same technique. It is good to have a patch, just in case, if you hit something with an instrument while playing. It cushions the sudden blow in your mouth ..
I borrowed a recorder from my mom and it had dents in the mouthpiece from biting. Poor thing.
It should be easy for him playing a recorder then you can do a duet, you on sax and he on recorder. Would be great to hear this.
Yeah! They'd have to step back from each other, but Duke Ellington made Norris Turney's flute work with saxes. so why not recorder?
She should start on Yamaha Venova the sax corder XD
Someone will have to transpose, though... 😁
Lol yeah that sax should transpose since its in the key of Bb while Sarah's Recorders are in C and F
@@Hiroyuki_T I have the Venova! The plastic reed is hard to get a good sound out off. I swapped it out with a real reed and it was instantly better.
"What if I dropped it?" "Then you dropped it, it's no big deal." Aaawwwwww.. that made me smile. How sweet!
I respect him for knowing that teaching was not his strong suit.
Well it's undeniable.....

"why is my heart beating so fast?"
Because hearing a saxophone does that to me too, don't worry. It literally is a sexy instrument, if you ask me.
You mean saxy eh? No? Okay I am leaving.
Sadullah Levent Özcan No come back
@@sadullahleventozcan1130 I didn't say that on purpose because that joke has been made soooo many times.
I was expecting from him some hilarious and funny answer to that question, like for example "because you're completely fallen in love with me" or something similar, it would have been a funny moment :)
Not that I disagree, but I read ”it literally is a sexy instrument” at 9:54, lol
NEVER say for better or worse when it comes to the recorder. You are the best example of why the recorder is awesome! It also takes a very long time to develop the lowest range of the sax, so the stuff you managed to do straight off was amazing!
"If you drop it, it's no big deal" Now that's love.
"You should play recorder because there are no individually wrapped reeds"
Plastic recorder: exists
YES thank you
Except it's not a disposable one use thing

Jon, you are a comedian. And comedians have to be very, very good in what they make fun of/with. :D
Am i the only person here who thinks this is soooo adorable?
If she hasn't ever played; the fact that she can make a sound is impressive..
Not really. Like he said, breath support is the same, and the sax is much more forgiving in terms of embouchure than clarinet, oboe, or flute.
Jim Cullen It is much more forgiving when it comes to making a sound. Good tone and good intonation are another story...
you'd think that by now you know that the teacher always has the best instrument ... no matter how often you switch
its always great to see someone who is VERY proficient in another instrument (recorder) still struggle with the damn saxophone. IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO STRUGGLES THANK GOD
This is a momentous day, Sarah! All the people who've always encouraged you to graduate to a "real" instrument must be so proud! 😉
Oof
Actually the recorder is a serious musical instrument with a thousand years of repertoire. Oh wait, I forgot where I'm commenting. Nevermind ;)
@@pabslondon lol it was first invented in the 16th century
@@kpp28 RIP
Warning! This comment is a joke! If recorder were a real instrument, you wouldn’t be expected to play every play every instrument (contrabass to whatever is the highest recorder) for a viable career.
"That's the #1 reason to learn an instrument: because it's the one you can find."
Hardcore relate
This video came out some days after I had a conversation with my father, when he commented that he knows a saxophone player that commented that "Sax is just like a giant recorder", and my dad asked if I wanted to "upgrade" to saxophone later... hahahaha Sadly for him, sax and recorders are two different instruments, each with their own beauties and quirks, but recorder will always be my favorite
Cutest UA-cam couple! :D
Yap.
JP Sears videos are also very entertaining. (Just to name another cute couple)

I play tenor saxophone, and I can't believe this is your first time! you sound like you've been playing a month at least! Wow
Hi Sarah - Good idea or bad idea? Answer: Actually it’s a great idea! As someone who plays multiple instruments myself, including the alto saxophone, Bb clarinet and Bb trumpet, I think it’s a great idea that you to learn to play other instruments such as the saxophone. You’ll find a lot of similarities between the recorder, saxophone and clarinet (besides being treble clef instruments). BTW: As a saxophone player, I don’t place my teeth over the mouthpiece (only my upper lip as I do with the recorder), thus avoiding any teeth vibration. And it plays just as good. 😊
You’ll also find that playing lower notes below the grand staff on the clarinet are a lot easier than playing lower notes on the saxophone at first, and conversely the higher notes above the grand staff are a lot easier to play, at first, on the saxophone than on the clarinet (thanks to the octave button).
When you first learn to play the saxophone, your jaw and face muscles will feel really fatigued. But after a couple of weeks of practice those sensations will go away. You can avoid the neck and backaches by playing the saxophone sitting down with the saxophone between your legs with the chair supporting the weight of the saxophone, thus taking pressure off your neck and back (but still using the neck strap). Once you learn the saxophone, the clarinet will come easy. It will require learning another fingering chart, however.
After you perfect your embouchure with the saxophone, and play more and more with feeling, phrasing, vibrato, and all that good stuff, the saxophone will sound more like a French horn (depending on the genre of music), and less like a goose. As far as playing the saxophone or recorder, I recommend both! It would be nice to add the saxophone to your carousel of instruments, including the concert flute that you already play. 😉 🎷♫
Double toothless embouchure used to be the norm in clarinet playing. Before the clarinet reed was placed underneath the mouthpiece instead of on top, you couldn't play any other way. The new method became standard, and Adolphe Sax adopted it for his saxophones.
@@DellaStreet123 Thanks for the information. I did not know that. BTW: I also use the "double toothless embouchure" when playing the Bb clarinet. :)
This was so super weird for me to watch as a sax player because I’ve been playing for about 4 years (played flute for two years before that, and clarinet for a weekend festival) and the concept of me not knowing how to play sax almost feels like it never existed, so it’s surreal to watch this and think about when I started sax and how far I’ve come
-Am I gonna play this?
- no, this is mine, you can play the other one.
Come on, man! It's your wife, you kissed before 🤣
instruments are a whole other story. it's much easier to kiss than to give your instrument to someone's else to play. that's serious business my dude. (read this in a playful voice, i'm all chill 🤣)
Maybe he had the saxophone he normally uses and the other one is the saxophone he don't really care about
But notice that after she was having some difficulties they switched instruments. Sometimes instruments have individual quirks and difficulties. As the better player, he knew that he could adjust to the requirements of the second instrument and let her play the one that he knew was going to give her less trouble.
Bro, my bari sax is worth thousands of dollars. It’s not about, it’s about damages witch cost a lot to repair. Also he appears to have a really nice metal mouth piece, witch the one for my bari costed about $250.
I love Jon and Sarah together! Y’all have such a fun time.
As a recorder and tenor sax player... Stamp of approval! A tip: tenor sax require a lot more air than most recorders and a very different embouchure technique. You want to blow a lot of high-speed air into it with minimum mouth pressure, all at the same time. And the lower notes requires a bit more open mouth as well as warmer air with more of your stomach muscles behind. But the rest of the notes tend to require a more harsh, thin and rapid flow of air than a recorder does. When I go back to a recorder, I usually have the problem that I can't get rid of all the air in my lungs before I need to breathe again. I say GOOD idea, cause you already got so much down from playing the recorder.
Recorder and tenor sax player here as well!
I had so much fun. First because John is a blast as always and I also like how you interact with each other.
Second it was interesting seeing someone who already is a musician and already knows everything he (she) needs to know tackle a new instrument. When we learn an instrument we usually need to learn music theory and solfeggio together with instrument technique and that makes things so much harder.
It would be nice, if off topic for this channel, for you to try to learn another instrument and hear you reporting your progress. But perhaps an alto saxofone would be better... or even better an instrumente that doesn't mess with your already established breathing technique.
"i have no fucking idea, i just blow in the thing and the notes come out"
relatable
He reminds me a lot of Derek from The Good Place. I expected him to start talking about his windchimes.
Omg now I can't unsee

Loved this!!!! Brought back sweet memories of my highschool days.
His voice sounds like the “better sax” dude. I can’t unhear it.
OMG you're right!
I played recorders and Irish whistles for about 23 years and have been playing saxophones for 1 year 7 months and this brings back memories of my first time playing, especially low notes not coming out and feeling my teeth vibrating on the mouthpiece. When you mentioned your neck hurting, mine did for a while then I switched to a harness, no more issues as having that weight on your neck can cause problems if you keep putting the weight there. I stopped playing recorders and whistles when learning the saxophone and the one thing I noticed when I did start playing them again, was the complete lack of resistance when you play a recorder or Irish whistle and my tuning was all over the place as with the saxophone, having that resistance when you blow down the mouthpiece, makes them a lot easier to keep in tune.
My mum played sax for years with a big soul band... shes had 2 surgeries on the disks in her neck then i hear these guys mentioning harnesses 😐 news to me that one
love "being a musician and being a teaching musician are not the same thing"!
Hey guys, this is very helpful. I recently restarted playing Clarinet, Alto, and Recorder after being away for decades. Hearing your assessments of the differences will help me when I practice them again. Thanks.
"You're not leaving any space for my jam!" LMAO classic musician complaint :D
I love your comment about the resistance and how hard your heart was beating after playing! I always feel that way playing the clarinet! I play 3rd clarinet in a community band and am gasping for more oxygen while letting "spare" air out all the time! Playing flute first and identify with your comment about no resistance on the recorder!
I started on flute in the fifth grade, added alto saxophone in 10th grade and clarinet in college. I'm learning recorder to teach my Elementary Music students.
First I love you channel!
more Jon please! he's cool!
Your husband is fabulous. I really understand his stand on teaching methods. To be a teacher is a gift. You missy have that and that is very special.
God bless you both. I really enjoyed the video. Super funny yet very interesting.

hahaha that was fun! this made me smile :) brilliant!
Its so funny watching this cuz i had lessons for both recorder and saxophone so i understand them both :)
Great couple, loved watching you guys having sax together.
This was the most wholesome intro I've ever seen.
Oh man this is making me want to pick up the sax again, I haven't played since high school lol
You two are so much FUN to watch in these weird mix-up instrument change videos. :) This one was good for a flashback to my sax-learning nightmare back in JHS. Long story short, my dad's investment in alto Selmer Mark {whatever the cool Roman numeral was back then} for me when I was born turned out to be a bad investment when I tried to learn it at age 12, although I did master the middle register squeak. It made a great second gigging horn for him though. I kind of like when Jon said, "I don't know man. I just blow into the thing and the note comes out." You guys made the sax look a lot more fun than I remember it being. My fun started when I switched to learning the oboe.
Your husband makes that mouthpiece quite the weapon! I loved trying the sax, the sound was great, what I found hard to get used to was the weight of it around my neck on the strap, or when I didn't do it right, the stress on my hands as I played. So many extra keys on both hands, but it makes so much more sense then the clarinet, the octave is just simple like the recorder. Tuning was tricky because of that reed and how I was playing it, I kept making it so flat and couldn't get used to adjusting the tuning by my embouchure. But enjoyed playing the sax while I had it, like the clarinet. Don't have either anymore, have more recorders and flute.
OBVIOUSLY I'm in love with Jon's t-shirt. And with both of you anyway
you guysz are the cutest i tell ya
F***ING HILARIOUS I LOVE IIIIIT
Had the exact same experience of physical exhaustion and lightheaded ness when moving to clarinet and saxophone after playing recorder a while

Nice one husband & wife.
I feel so cool when i tell someone in school that i play the saxophone🎷😏
The alto saxophone is one of my favorite instruments that I can play for hours at a time. It goes so well with so many genres of music, while switching the melody of the tune between the lower and upper registers. 😊 🎷 🎼 🎶
I read it wrong and got scared for a second

Yes! Clarinet next please. You guys are so cute together. I request more Sarah and Jon collabs. What does Jon think about the e-saxaphon-ish instruments?
Love the bass clarinet representation
Ha! Very amusing.. I'm a flute player but I finally bought some recorders. My not very musical partner picked one up and started playing it beautifully quite quickly while I was still struggling doing scales! Our jam session sounded a bit like yours.. ;-)
this was very amusing
Only came here to see them making some sweet sweet sax...

Oh yeah I'd love to see him teaching you the banjo! It's not a wind instrument so maybe it'd feel pretty out of your comfort zone
That was hillarious. I'd like to see you play the banjo, just remember not to blow it though!!
Fun! You did well :-)
Much respect to John, but recorder all the way! Reed instruments are so hard! (And I say this after doing clarinet, oboe, AND bassoon.) Anyway, to each his own. This video was lovely. Your husband is such a charmer! (And he's a hottie!) Lucky you! Keep up the fantastic work, Sarah! You've been more help to recorder players than you can possibly know, both for me and countless others. Cheers to you and yours!
This was so fun to watch. I don’t even play any wind instruments
Good idea. Fun to watch.Trumpet next, please!

0:47 Why did I choose the Tenor Saxophone?

Most entertaining :) :)
A Trumpet lesson would be good. Luv your vids.
I WANT ONE!
you're a natural!
@1:38 i laughed out loud at her look of disgust at the taste/texture of the reed, haha
I too made an attempt to play sax, once. For me the big take away is fingering. While the notes were different on an alto sax, the fingerings were very similar to playing recorder. So for all those music teachers and parents, learning soprano recorder in elementary school is a gateway to learning sax. I agree with others, a sax and recorder duet would be fun.
Какие вы милые 🥰🥰🥰😌🙏
Alternatively, you could both try a clarineau which is basically a low-register chalumeau with baroque recorder fingering and a reed so each of you has exactly half the knowledge and practice ;)
I would love to see jon teach you clarinet!
"the saxophone has come to me"!! :) ... hilarious!
suggestion: how about going through the "traditional" repertoire for recorders across countries and/or across the ages, detailing the differences and similarities? how about testing the timbre of the recorder against timbres of other instruments, testing which go along well and which don't? you could also add a bit about acoustics and what happens in concerts according to the place where you are playing and the instruments that are playing along... do you add reverb? or is it bad? do you need amplification? or equalization?...
I went from recorder, sop to alto to bass, to flute to clarinet to alto sax, and just recently to tenor sax. There's some guitar, cello, piano, gamba, dudduk, bass guitar, bombarde and medieval shawm in there, psaltery and, finally, I'm learning to play music, not mechanicing!
Hello Sarah! I was thinking, you should try playing the clarinet! Because I remember you saying that John can play clarinet, so just a suggestion~
This is so Cute....! 😀🤪❤️
Hey Sarah, How about a video about puzzling out the Venova, which is Yamaha's new recorder-ish mini-sax. A friend lent me a Venova last summer. The fingerings are quite similar to the recorder, but I found it challenging to get used to a reed (which I installed upside down for the first days I was trying the instrument.)
The title quickly caught my eye. Fortunately, sax was spelled correctly.
I play both the recorder and the saxophone 😍
