Favorite band of all time. Hatred is the pinnacle of extreme metal to me and I still listen to it an unhealthy amount. A few things to note because I'm one of those fuckin nerds you mentioned:
-Yes, the lead singer is a lawyer. Not sure what he specializes in. He spent some time working on death row in Texas iirc, so there's your true crime connection.
-The band had actually had most of the sequel to Hatred for Mankind written and recorded, but the status of those files is unknown. May have been lost. One of the members told me it was nastier than HFM, if you can believe that. Justin Bartlett already created the album artwork for it in the same style as the original.
-There is a video of an unreleased song they performed at Damnation Fest. They said it was only to be played once. Starts at 2:30.
ua-cam.com/video/nwERnK_0avU/v-deo.html
-Fuck Prosthetic records
-The band just opened their own studio in England inside a 140 year old church.
The "post rock" influence is why dis ended up collabing with a unnamed member of bossk on Widowmaker. Also no one has pointed out that the producer of NV was mr Justin K Broadrick of Godflesh/Jesu/Zonal fame.
@@lewisb85 Yup. DIS is how I discovered Bossk. Great band. Another worth mentioning is U.S. Christmas. Nate Hall helped with TA1 I believe or at least contributed to their work in some manner.
@@TheHammerofDissidence I remember talking to T about how cool a band December wolves are which I actually find hilarious considering Wyatt is from Boston two of his favriote bands from the UK anaal nathrakh and DIS are both influenced by a band from his own backyard. December wolves were doing the serial killer sample thing before DIS but not as focused there would be samples from movies based on serial killers etc and other stuff, Dragged were a lot more focused with it.
hopefully those files aren't lost hahhaha
@@octavianmaximus7898 Something happened with them. I can't remember what exactly. They may be fine but put on the back burner for all I know. I believe 2020 was originally going to be the year it was supposed to be released.
I’ve always thought “dragged into sunlight”Just meant like a vampire being dragged into the sunlight against its will
I thought the same thing. Like the movie John Carpenter's Vampires.
My excact comment I was about to put until seeing someone else beat me to it. Definitely this
Brother same
Peter got him! Then peter died in a freak sunlight accident! What we do in the shadows. brilliant kiwi film
I came here to mention John Carpenter’s Vampires - that’s exactly what the band name reminds me of
Dragged into Sunlight is one of the most terrifying bands in extreme metal alongside Portal and Lord Mantis, but they’re so good. Hatred for Mankind is an amazing album and I love their collaboration with Gnaw Their Tongues on NV.
Definitely their best release
Gwar are better
I've listened to Today is the Day, I've listened to Lifelover, I've listened to Admiral Angry.
I'll take you up on your word.
Today is the day is my favorite metal band. Also integrity.
Love Lord Mantis!!! Didn't know they were though of along the same lines as dragged into sunlight. Both are amazing. Damn. Now I wanna listen to them.
I always saw the name as them dragging the uglier elements of society (serial killers etc) to the surface where people can see it, hence "dragged into sunlight", I think it comes from a serial killer interview( I think its Joel Rifkin but happy to be corrected).
That's always what I got from the name. One of the coolest band names to date.
I always think of John Carpenters Vampires when they cross bow the vamps with the chain attached and drag them into the sun
The name also abbreviates to DIS, the city of demons from Dante's Divine Comedy. Could be a coincidence.
My opinion is that the title came to be when the band got kicked out of their mom's basement into sunlight lmao
I blast Dragged into Sunlight anytime I'm on my way to somewhere I don't want to go. Because I'm being dragged into sunlight lol
I always interpreted the band's name to refer to sort of being dragged out of your own darkness against your will
I still have my Dragged Into Sunlight hoodie that I got about 5 or 6 years ago. Totally stoked that I was able to find some of their merch at the time. Absolutely killer band.
Is it the imagine of the cloaked guy and the satanic looking goats he's herding? I have that shirt
@@off6848 no I think he's referring to the hoodie where there's severed hands
I heard of DIS for the first time seeing them live in 2017 supporting Mayhem and Asphyx. The show was quite appealing to me (esp. them standing with their backs turned to the audience caught my attention) but somehow they didn't impress me enough and they flew under my radar, and that's something that I regret the most, because now I am a huge fan of the band and it's very hard to see them live. I came back to their music when Prosthetic released TA2 and I loved it. Also the ambient part of the song somehow brought me back to the live show I saw and brought the best memories from it. Then I listened to HFM and it blew me away so much that since then it is my all time favorite metal album of all time.
Loving the Death in June shirt
Been listening to extreme metal since the beginning and I just wanted to thank you for turning me onto these lads...very cool and totally unique in this genre. Love the vids and your perspective, keep it up :)
This is probably obvious as hell, and someone already figured this out, but the release date for Plainfield/Monarch of Scum is 11/12/1934 which is the birthdate of Charles Manson. Manson was detained at a boys' home in Plainfield, Indiana before moving around and eventually landing in California. Also the artwork for the song is a picture from the Jonestown Massacre. I didn't even realize the clutter of objects were bodies until I reverse searched it lol. God I love the creepiness of this band. Great video man.
Nice, I came here to ask this question because I just saw that release date on Spotify and was thrown off.
I was really stoned when I first heard DIS. It scared the ever living hell outta me. I love it!
Me too! I was tripping on acid and heard them for the first time...in the middle of the night laying on a trampoline and staring at the night sky. No joke. Best night EVER and I'll never forget it.
Yesterday my new boss asked me “if I could have any vinyl what would it be?”, and Hatred for Mankind was the only album that came to my mind. I said that I would get back to her on that 😂
Fuck man, I said I would go to bed, but I saw this notification, it’s exactly what I’d like to see you speak on
I just found your channel, thanks for all the info man. DIS is one of my all time favorite bands. Hoping to see more releases from them!!
I always check in with this band every now and then to see if they have released another album, both of their albums are just so good.
Also the jonestown pictures with the "last sermon" being played was one of the hardest things ive ever watched. Far more disturbing than I could ever imagine.
I’ve had Hatred on repeat for like 10 years. Lucky enough to have seen them 3 times, including opening for Mayhem on DMDS tour. where the very nearly wiped the floor with the headliner. But actually, Mayhem put on a great show as well.
Great video Wyatt. I still can’t believe you’ve seen both DIS and Gnaw their tongues live, must’ve been crazy
I talked to the band regarding these releases that don't match the info on discogs, particularly about Widowmaker, and what they said is that Prosthetic Records Printed stuff without their knowledge or consent, to sell them "off the record". That's why the copies that are being sold new online, by their merch distributor and others, don't have a catalog number.
I own two LP copies of Widowmaker, one of N.V. (bought from LHP merch) and none of them are cataloged.
Great video on one of the best bands out there. It’s a shame they are not more active. One of the sickest, most intense live shows I’ve seen. Highly recommend seeing them if you ever maybe get the chance. Also, they do play songs of Negative Volume as well, namely Absolver and I think omniscienza
I just discover your channel, i'm already a big fan.
Amazing content.
Thank you for the hydration reminder at the end of every video
I'm pretty surprised so many people seemed to have different interpretations of the name. I always felt like it was just about being dragged into life against our will
Saw them perform a few years back in The Netherlands with Gnaw Their Tongues. Was pretty sick, but also pretty funny how they just played their entire set with their back towards the crowd and barely moving.
Don't know why people cry about having their backs turned it's just a fk you. It works. Metal fans are such dorks they demand you must perform a certain way. It's not iron maiden.
@@UnclePhillyMyAss Yeah personally did not mind that at all, was just unexpected at the time. But I agree that some people would definitely get triggered by such minimal crowd interaction.
Skramz bands been playing like that since the 90s
I think you should cover the Japanese doom/sludge band Corrupted. they're also a reclusive mysterious band with a no social media/no interviews/no official photos/no major labels policy. most of their discography is on splits with other bands and i'd love to hear somebody cover them
I can't remember how i found this band exactly. It was eith a video you did on them, or Goniloc. A lot of the death metal and black metal i have discovered in the past four years is from those two channels. Always good stuff, Wyatt. Thanks for linking that sample video, that's gonna be a fun rabbit hole to dive into.
Saw DIS support Mayhem 5 years ago. I remember that performance very well, twas a spectacular evening.
Checked out Gnaw their tongues yesterday for the first time. I really loved 'Nihilism hung up and burned'. And listened to 2 more whole albums, until my stomach began to turn. Felt kinda like a little sick. So I stopped for that day. But I really loved it. Don't know why my body seemed to reject it, while my mind seemed to live it.
I'm gonna check out 'DrGged Into Sunlight' today. And I'm really looking forward to it.
BTW I'm so thankful for you mentioning 'Konflict' and 'Tetragrammacide'. Those are now among my favorites!
I went very fast from really liking, and getting into, Black Metal for the first time, at age 37, to Noise adjacent and BM/Noise music like the aforementioned and the likes of Emit. Abrubtum sound kind of boring (but still great!) to me now.
Thank you for helping me along on my extreme music journey!
Had the same feeling when i started to listen to Prowler in the yard by Pig destroyer, depending if you're new to extreme music like DIS and GT your body will feel like it's scared cause its a new thing but you get use to it
dragged into sunlight is one of my favorite bands ever
Someone who agrees these guys are the heaviest! Gnaw Their Tounges doesn't even come close in my eyes. Would absolutely love more videos on power electronics, ambient, or anything extremely weird. Woods of Behail, Apator, Havohej, that sorta thing.
Excellent video!!
You mean Woods of Belial from Finland? Featuring Moonsorrow/Finntrol members, albums called Deimos XIV or something like that. Classic owned it for years. Wraith of the Ropes is also a huge one.
Havohej rips! I also highly recommend Pneuma Hagion.
I agree that the band's name means being dragged against our will to this putrid and scary mad world with other corrupted and psycho human beings.
thanks for the deep dive into this one
Cool video again. Learned a bit more about one of my favourite bands.
I always just assumed the band name was a reference to the way they kill the vampires in that John Carpenter movie, literally dragging them into sunlight
love this band. you sir have earned yourself a subscriber.
Explaining :STALAGGH: calling it
holy fucking shit, finally a video on what's unironically one of my most favorite bands ever!
It's simply the best metal record of all time (highly subjective I know), but i've yet to find anything better
the attenborough of heavy music. love your intellectual delivery and you make me laugh. The jester is often the smatest dude in the room. Normally i dont find you funny {unles your doing your parody comedy gold} so maybe it is the spliff. Anyways i really appreciate your opinions and vids . You have made me realise that music can be stil bel dangerous and groundbreaking in this media saturated world we live in. In THe west uno. So i wish you prosperity and good times during your stay among the living. Stay sharp as a razor bro
Hey Wyatt, couldn't help but notice your Mass Effect album there. Cool franchise with absolutely perfect sci-fi music.
Would love another proper Dragged Into Sunlight album fr
Bruh that DIJ shirt is 🔥 please do a video on DIJ
live they are like an art installation then a band on stage
hatred for mankind is one of my favorite albums to this day
Dragged Into Sunlight made my muscles grow bigger \m/
Personally glad you told me about DiS and honestly, HFMK is the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to term of the music of what they do. If anyone says otherwise, they're lying to themselves
I have that live CD. But I'd only be willing to trade it for a vinyl copy of Hatred for mankind.
What’s the pig vinyl?
Weird flex, but I was at one of DIS's first ever shows. I was at university in Liverpool and they played a venue called Korova with Burial and Neuroma and it was £1 entry. I believe the venue actually burned down not long after, which was unrelated to the gig, haha. A few people I knew had some pretty disparaging takes on the frontman who had previously been in a band called Unsanctum, but I can't say I've ever met the guy myself.
Nice DIJ-Nada !!!!! Greetings from Germany
thanks for the video, expecially for the band name break down
Knowing T more around the time of forming this band I always took "dragged into sunlight" meaning that it's them.....or those like them living in some sort of darkness (interpret that how you will) yet constantly meeting people/situations that are trying to drag us into the/their sunlight. Being dragged somewhere you hate/feel uncomfortable being.
I may be very wrong.
Fan of theirs since the conception. Have an OG copy of Hatred for Mankind which I believe has yet to be reissued.
These guys are cool as hell. They stayed with me in Rochester for there bug jar show. Ripped live.
At 11 mins… I always thought that it was referring to the death of a vampire…(being forcefully dragged into the sunlight and murdered).!!!
Saw the album art for hatred for mankind and immediately had to listen. Love their sound, so oppressive
If you’re interested Kasa Mana has an album made in 2013 called Mantisce
The cover of that live album is what looks like yayo on the cover of Agoraphobic Nosebleed-Altered States 3” Which is sick as hell for a live recording honestly super bad ass.
When I stumbled upon them, I knew they were special. Extreme metal has torn me apart for other sun genres. And DIS ushered me into that fucked up world.
Love ur DIJ shirt!!!
Widowmaker is also a straight up masterpiece...sounded like a glorious ode to noothgrush and corrupted
Forgot about noothgrush thank you foe reminding me
the name "dragged into sunlight" immediately made me think of killing vampires when I read it.
They are one of my favorite live bands of all time. Nobody can follow them live. Remember they put Craft after them at MDF?
I mean, okay Craft werent very good live at that time but I still say NOBODY can follow DiS live.
I seem to remember them playing at least one song from the Gnaw record during the second MDF set. . . .
i’m a mainly rap listener but when i randomly come across a metal band i like i deep dive i don’t know too many metal sub genres but i haven’t heard anything i liked immediately in a while like hatred for mankind which i just heard because of the passing away of justin bartlett
I think it might mean dragging out the dark side into the world into the light which means like showing the public the truth?
Explaining Diapsiquir would be really cool
Them along with others are on the list for it .
Great Video. About the name: I never gave it too much thought because it was pretty obvious to me. Depressed and misanthropic people do not like to go outside and be in the sun. There's always something dragging you out there, to the sun, to the world, to your job... You'd much rather stay home and close all the shades. The other thing is, that you're such a vampire who lives in darknes and obscurity that if they drag you out into sunlight you'll be destroyed. It's about the anguish of having to perform in the "real" world and It's a great name for a band. Keep up the great work!
Great band live and on wax!
I always thought Dragged into Sunlight represented the killer’s victim being forcefully dragged against their will into “the light” AKA death
Totally true. They’ve kept that mystique and it really works for them
Just a guess but being dragged would imply against the will of, but the sunlight seems more like enlightening or to be enlightened.
I saw these live once at Damnation Festival. For me they are one of those bands that are better sitting down alone in your house through your sound system. Like Khanate, saw them live also. It gets tiring, especially if you have had a couple of drinks and your attention span isn't what it normally is, you are standing, it wasn't fun. As for mysterious bands, Corrupted has to be at the top. No interviews, no photos and ultra rare live shows. That rare DIS album cover has Agoraphobic Nosebleed artwork on it?
I've always thought the true crime aspect regarding the samples in Hatred for Mankind we're incredibly cool and interesting. Like the aspect of murder remained from the death metal influence although slightly lessened in gory brutality at least to focus on the deranged and misanthropic face to black metal. Its sort of disappointing to me actually that there aren't many other black metal bands that take a thematic approach to serial killers as these are two topics I particularly enjoy, or perhaps I'm just not in the know. Closest thing I can think of at the top of my head is Krieg's single "Patrick Bateman", although that's just a title and fictional.
Also the iceberg statement "Dragged into Sunlight were in the IRA" 💀💀💀
thanks wyatt, gonna check this band out tonight. You're my favorite youtuber who stutters and mispronounces
I feel like the band name means having something you dont wanna know about told to you forcefully
Loved Dragged Into Sunlight since they released "Hatred..." and I too think it is one of the best extreme albums ever. I got the white vinyl of it too!!
DIS are one of the best bands we have here in the UK in terms of their flawless discography and hellish live performances. Been lucky to have see them 4 times so far. The band has alot of material recorded/in the process of writing more so keep your eyes peeled hopefully for a 2023 release.
I always took the name as the evil and dark secrets of the world being drug from the shadows. Into the harsh light of day for all to see.
Where’d you get that long sleeve
boiled angel is one of the greatest songs of all time
"Boiled Angel" was a 'zine from the ~early '90's, the guy was charged and convicted for obscenity as I recall, pretty sure it was in Florida....
Death doom is the shit.
Amorphis/Asphyx are other bands that’s great at this stuff.
Also, “complaining that it has too much gore or is pitch black” is a great analogue.
Metal needs to shock people, I agree on that.
That’s what the genre set out to do in the first place.
First thing I think of when hearing term dragged into sunlight is vampire theme. They can't stand the sun light.
They are definitely one of the best extreme metal bands to come out of the 2000s. Also very nice shirt, Death In June is awesome.
I concur also. I thought I was the only metalhead to like that band.
@@bryannguyen1260 Oh absolutely not. I know many people who are metalheads and love Death In June.
@@uruk-hai2819 maybe cause there's a lot of racist metalheads too
@@giosantt You think Death In June is racist? That might be the most hilarious thing I have ever heard.
Where'd you cop the Di6 shirt?
Nice Death in June Nada sweatshirt. ❤
Is there a dij us store now
nice NADA! shirt
Do you have an email I can contact for reviews/submissions?
I know it likely will never happen but I'm still hoping for a vinyl reissue of Hatred for Mankind. Or I wish I would've picked it up when it was still 150 on discogs.
stop being poor then
Very brave wearing that shirt 😭👌
I love them
Where did you get that DI6 longsleeve
Got the cover of hfm tattooed recently , rip vberkvlt 🖤
I should thank a friend I made on reddit for showing me this band
the cover for hatred has leviathan moon
💖
Nice dude
they some good fellas
widow maker 1,2 and 3 is great.
The name could also be symbolic of the band dragging the hideousness of the dark subject matter of their music into sunlight, into the light of awareness, to be reveiled to us so we become cognisant of it.
I never saw the band’s album cover when I was initially told their name to look them up, I immediately thought their name was a discussion on being thrust into an uncaring world, so I don’t see your theory as being far-fetched, it makes a lot of sense.
