This is a game changer. Details like these make a world of difference, just because i assumed all my life how a correct hammer on and pull off was and wasted so much time & nerves over years. I have been playing guitar for 12 years, written, composed and recorded 2 albums. Have spent the last 10 years looking for videos to explain hammerons and pulldowns and I have never found the solution until I found this video. This makes totally sense. I akways thought there was something wrong with me/my hand, but no. Now I just have to get to work!!!!!
This channel is a gold mine! My technique has never been better and I’m way more comfortable! I can’t express how thankful I am for your lessons, thank you max!
No idea why it took so long for UA-cam's algorithm to introduce your channel, but this video is fantastic. Such a clear explanation of the mechanisms involved in hammer-ons and 'pull offs'. The mistakes you described are exactly the things I've been doing, especially with the really weak 'pull offs' where the sound just dies. I now have a really clear goal to work towards. Thanks so much!
Best Legato lesson I have ever come across. I discovered this on my own, by playing very slow. I discovered it on my own because NO ONE has ever talked about this in such detail. This would have been great about 85 years ago when I started doing all this...
Thank you so much! I too had to discover this on my own... This video is a part of an upcoming course I'm offering on technique...stay tuned if you're interested in more lessons like this one!
Thanks, i always struggle when i need to to pull off with more than 2 fingers or need to skip to other strings like a lot of slash solos, the man is a master of it .
Thank you so much for this video, extremely helpful. I started playing guitar about a month ago and I’m making huge progress, really held back from pull offs mostly and for some reason you’re the first to talk about hitting other strings and the finger positions and which knuckles to aim for. So so much help, you easily earned my like, thank you!
Damn Bro your explanation was so clear! I thought I was finally getting the hang of it but my pull-offs and hammer ons just sounded so weak. I kind of figured that if I actually plucked the string with my finger when pulling off it sounded much cleaner and you just confirmed that 100%. I agree with you, I dont know why they call em pull-offs, it's more confusing then anything and does not describe the actual movement being performed. This is still not easy but so much easier than trying to get a strong sound by just simply taking your finger off the fret
Thank you! I’ve had 3 guitar instructors over the years, and I’ve asked all of them at some point for some nitty gritty technique info just like this. Their answers have always been along the line of “just practice over and over.” Now I have something to focus on.

I've been having this problem for a while now where my pinky is inaccurate during hammer-ons, like sometimes i just miss the strings that i need to hit, I'm also sure I have the same technique as u taught in this video. Do you have any tips for this? Thanks
Yeah, you're almost certainly using the other knuckles besides your big knuckle to try and do the hammer-on. That causes you to have to aim, and ultimately you'll miss trying it that way. I'd love to see a video of you doing it so I can give you a more accurate response. Send me a DM and I'll help you out!
Hello ! Ive been practicing this on my acoustic and keep hitting the string below it, any tips on this or this something I should practice on the electric ? Thanks for the awesome video!
Yes, I do. I'd love to know what you're working on and I'd like to hear a little bit about your goals and your background as a guitarist. Please send me an email to max@maxrichmusic.com and we can talk a bit more in depth about what you'd like to achieve. Looking forward to hearing from you!
hey max, great video! I would like to ask you something about pull off. I have thicks strings and on the 6th and 5fth string when I'm pulling off something my pulling off is making me bend the string. This technique of pull off is something like picking with the right hand and after attacking the string with the pick letting rest the pick on the next string but making it with the left hand?
Yes, that's basically what you're trying to do...essentially plucking the string with your left hand. Pulling down is always better then pulling "off". As far as bending the string goes, it's because you don't have enough ability to do opposing motion in your fingers. This is a result of not enough finger independence. When you're pulling down with one finger, the other finger must remain still...instead it's moving with the pull off finger downward. If you'd like some help with opposing motion or finger independence, send me an email and I'd be happy to discuss it some more with you.
Great lesson. So where I really have problems with hammering on is with bar or partial bar chords. The bar isn’t the problem, but getting good enough or strong enough strong to fret contact when multiple fingers are hammering on from the bar. Any help? Thank you.
I hear this all the time...and it's probably because of one small error you're making with your thumb. Check out this video, it explains it perfectly...maxrichmusic.com/perfect-bar-chords
Love your content firstly learning lots. I have a fake fender aka (squire) it's been modified a bit all pots and pickups have been swapped out. It's got humbuckers on bridge from a 78 Ibanez destroyer an neck is Seymore dunken humbucker an mid is a single Seymore. It's a strat but can sound like a telly an be as sensitive. What I don't like is the selection switch. I'm constantly hitting it an changing position. Any suggestions to practice for strumming so I stop hitting the switch? I know the sound will change if I did it, but wondering if a les paul style epiphone would be a better electric option for me. My acoustic is a Takamine jasmine an that's great
That's a common situation for strat players. I almost exclusively play a strat and have been able to avoid that by strumming more vertically than in a half-circle shape. At the bottom of my downstroke, my hand is between the neck and middle pickup, exactly below where it is at the top of the stroke. If you're hitting the switch you're probably strumming more toward the butt of the guitar and less vertically...which also means you're changing the pick angle as you go through each string. That can give you a tonal and volume difference between all the strings. I'd try to strum more vertically than you currently are.
I have a little problem, Idk if it is due to the string height and I can't do pull off from the pinky finger to the ring finger, any tips to master this?
Yes definitely! Think about pushing upward with your ring finger as you pull downward with your pinky. Essentially forcing the string to go in two different directions.
took me awhile to be able to do it, really had to slow it down until i was able to keep my ring finger still whilst my pinky moved down. still the hardest one to do
Yeah, it's not easy but learning how your anatomy works can be the thing that makes all the difference. I've found that by studying how our tendons, bones and muscles are formed I can design practice routines that don't fight my anatomy but rather work with it in order to maximize my results.
Nice video. You could make it a little shorter, especially in the beginning when you describe the hammer-on. A hammer has a fixed head, like your finger when it is in its bent position. Then you are just finger picking with the fret hand for pull offs.
In acoustic guitar double hammer on almost sound nothing... Can you please demonstrate double hammer-on on acoustic guitar. Idea of hammer on is, strike on a previous note and sustain that vibrations through the upper notes... Is not that correct ??
Yes, that's correct, but it is definitely possible and can be very musical on acoustic guitar...it's just much harder because you must be more accurate and powerful when you attack the string.
Ok this helped me further already, BUT: I'm stuck with trying pull-offs only with a downward scale over 4 strings. I'm trying to do a legato run from B-[15, 13, 11] to G-[14, 12, 11] to D-[14, 12, 10] to A-[13, 12, 10]. The problem i'm getting stuck with is that this down-pulling for a pulloff is counter to the motion to the next string. Is this just a practice issue, or is there another way to pulloff in the other direction somehow?
No, you can only do pull-offs downward (toward the ground). You have to relax back upward after the pull-off so you can be ready to use that finger on the next string
This is a common problem and can be avoided with a bit of practice. Try doing a pull-off by slowly increasing the downward pressure, at the same time imagine pushing up with the finger you're pulling off to. Essentially try to make your fingers go in opposite directions. Be careful about over-exaggerating this though, you can easily begin to bend the string upward if your not too careful. So practice slowly and by pushing upward (a little bit) you should be able to keep your finger static in one place.
I have been searching all on youtube to get loud hammer ons . I cant get the proper sound when i hammer on after pulling off a string. Especially thinner strings .
i love wasting my time being shown the "wrong" way or what "not to do"..... just stick to the dam point and help please. show us what to do, not "what not to do" orrrrrr add timestamps for picky little princesses like me lol please
Sry, but you are an idiot. In order to avoid any mistakes, you need to know what mistakes you might be making. It is part of such a tutorial. And… „wasting time“? Jesus, it is a 10 minute video.

@@MaxRichMusic Thank you. Sounds like that's really a practice thing then. :)

Every time I do the pull-offs I am bending the string down, taking it out of tune. How can I avoid this?
This is a common problem and can be avoided with a bit of practice. Try doing a pull-off by slowly increasing the downward pressure, at the same time imagine pushing up with the finger you're pulling off to. Essentially try to make your fingers go in opposite directions. Be careful about over-exaggerating this though, you can easily begin to bend the string upward if your not too careful. So practice slowly and by pushing upward (a little bit) you should be able to keep your finger static in one place.
@@MaxRichMusic Thanks man! Will try this out.
Right on! Let me know if you're still having trouble with it. I'm happy to help you out! max@maxrichmusic.com
u look like u would accompany frodo on a quest to destroy the one ring
hammer on and pull off called also "legato", right?
Yep, legato is what all "slurs" are called: hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides etc.
About hammer-offs? The reverse of a hammer on. Guitarists always play them, but I hear little about this reverse move.
👍
Puldown....
Thank you Thank you - very good information.
Glad it was helpful!
I have been searching all on youtube to get loud hammer ons . I cant get the proper sound when i hammer on after pulling off a string. Especially thinner strings .
Has anyone ever told you that you look like Chris Fehn?
Hahaha, no but that's hilarious! I can see it now

i love wasting my time being shown the "wrong" way or what "not to do"..... just stick to the dam point and help please. show us what to do, not "what not to do"
orrrrrr add timestamps for picky little princesses like me lol please
Sry, but you are an idiot. In order to avoid any mistakes, you need to know what mistakes you might be making. It is part of such a tutorial. And… „wasting time“? Jesus, it is a 10 minute video.
