  • This is a first look of the new carbon bicycle wheels from Winspace (Lún Performance): the 2023 Hyper D33's. I will go over the changes from the older models and compare them to my current Hyper 50 wheels.
    These wheels have lot's of similarities but a few smal and big changes to the rims, spokes and hubs.

    Good review sir. Good luck on Haute Route! As a wheelbuilder, I always preferred crossing spokes to touch either over or under the trailing spokes depending on lacing. Always thought they braced one another laterally a bit better. Otherwise you kind of end up with a radially laced rim. Just my opinion of course. I know lots of brands don't contact eachother at the cross.

    The weight of my 38mm previous version is 1420gr total. My new D45 is 646 + 801 = 1447gr total which is an awesome improvement considering the 46+54 rims compared to 38 FR. The 38 was too heavy compared to the 1.2kg competitions. Will be installing them with 25 front + 28 rear tomorrow.

      Hey man,
      The d33 will be lighter (total weight) and lighter rim so less moment of inertia. (See more about that on my review of the “old” hypers)
      For climbing the 33 will be the best.
      Overall the 45 will be a very good choice.
      For me there was a year between the climbing event with the old hyper 50’s and the new hyper 33. I’d have to test them side by side to notice the difference tbh

    Hi! 🙂 Maybe u could help to decide what brand and which carbon wheels should I get? My rides are ussualy 30-100km with 100-400 meters of total climbs, so pretty flat. I think I should get around 45-50mm deep wheels? I could buy new zipp 303s from local shop for around 700 EU, or it would worth to spend around 1170 eu for Windpace hyper wheels? Or maybe something else? Also prefer louder hub sound as there where i live many pedestrians walking on bike paths and i dont like bells 🙂

    Jasper, I think I might need some help 😀. The last two years I've been building bikes from used frames and selling them for profit - I've now reached a point where I want to upgrade to a good carbon wheelset, but I can't decide whether to go rim or disc. The basic principle is to keep the wheels long term while trading the rest of the bike for profit.
    I live in an area with steep hills and I'm not the lightest - 75 kg, so I'm thinking it's better to go disc for the longevity of the rims? The only thing I'm afraid of is the maintenance cost.
    Also, what would you pick as the best VALUE wheelset? 2023 Hypers?

    • @jasperverkuijl
      @jasperverkuijl  Рік тому

      Hey dude.
      Since the industry is pretty much forcing all cyclist to discbrakes, the answer is easy, discs. Rim brake bike parts will come unavailable at some point and they are worthless too because nobody wants it anymore.
      Same reason I built up my Winspace SLC climbing bike with disc groupset.
      Best value for money is probably still the “old” hypers but for a small bit extra you will have wider rims which suit wide tires and low tire pressure better so I’d still go for the 2023 hypers 👌🏻
      Steep hills is go for the low rim like i have in this video.
      The hub parts are all replaceable so you can maintain it forever and keep riding them a long time!
      Let me know what you decide!👍🏻👍🏻

      Not sure what you mean, thy hubs are aluminum. The bearings are ceramic

  • @MarkBurghouwt
    @MarkBurghouwt 2 роки тому +1

    Wider internal rim width doesn’t make a tire more aero right?!? It’s just wider so higher cda (surface)

    • @jasperverkuijl
      @jasperverkuijl  2 роки тому +1

      the wheel/tire combination will get more aero because the transition from wheel to tire is more smooth (when they are similar with). So the surface may go up but the drag coefficient will go down making the drag go down.
      If you'd use a very narrow tire, you're better off with a narrow rim (like the old hypers). but the wider tire gives less rolilng resistance so in the end the wider rims with wider tires are probably faster on the normal road and the skinny tires with skinny rims are faster on perfect smooth indoor track e.g.

      It’s 2 different sets so you would compare apples and oranges.
      But the difference between the low profile wheels is about 30 grams from the old model to the new.

    great honest review. i used to think the same about Winspace and Lun wheels. i bought a pair of disc 50 hypers in November 2021. 1st impressions were so great that in Jan 2022 ordered a second pair. well, my 1st pair never held air for more than 3 days in the front wheel. i blamed it on other possible issues. after i received my second set, i noticed the same thing . front wheel not holding air for more than 2 or 3 days. i tried 3 different brand of tires with the same result. i contacted Winspace and they requested serial numbers and the likes. 3 weeks went by and no feedback from Winspace. i contacted them again and they recommended i replace the valve stem. i tried that and no improvement. after another 2 weeks of emails with Winspace they offered a $200 credit due to the fact that the only solution they could come up with was for me to use the front wheels with inner tubes. i agreed to it. it has been more than 3 weeks now and no refund and no communication from Winspace. i am assuming i have been taken by another chinese manufacturer like many people have. do not be fooled by all the great reviews. people are getting paid to post them.

      I’ll pas it on to Winspace. Sorry for your bad experience. My wheels hold their air fine but tubeless wil ALWAYS leak! You need to pump every day!
      If you don’t want that, use inner tubes.

    Can you please weigh them so we know the real world weight? My wheels are significantly heavier than listed. Thanks.

      @jasperverkuijl  2 роки тому

      Currently having the tires on already, I can’t. But I’ll do in the future for a full review.
      They probably lost the weight without tuneless tape and valve. Maybe you measured with since they come with those pre-installed?

      @@jasperverkuijl When I weigh wheels I don't have tape and valves on them. Straight from the box always. What tires do you have on them? Set up tubeless? Anyway I ordered these just now and will arrive in about 2 weeks. I'll weigh and inform everyone here later.

      @@thebespokecyclist3624 I’ve got them tubeless yes. Lightest would be foldable tires with tubolito inners.
      Great if you can let us know about the weight. I think it’s would be a waits to pull off the brand new tape just to weight them but be my guest!😉

    I don't know, I think my Campagnolo Shamal Carbon wheels look sweeter.

      Those look special indeed. Not sure how good a uneven spoke layup like that would be, I never tried.
      They are quite a bit heavier than the Winspace d33 too. (250gr more)

    Some confusions: sometimes you claim they are 38mm deep, sometimes you claim they are 35mm deep. AFAIK they are 35. It's true that labeling them as 33 does not help. Anyway... what about the promised review? I can't find it, it seems... I'm interested in these wheels.

      Yeah if I said 35 and 38 I may just made a mistake. Sorry about that.
      Yep i had a review in the planning but didn’t get to it…

    No reason to think touching spokes would "help" each other. It's a remnant of the old idea of tying spokes together.

      @@jasperverkuijl Very often things like this are "cargo cult". I.e. "we've always done things this way". Without any actual data that it helps or not I'm going to believe that touching being beneficial is BS.

    I’m worried when brands start adding years to their products. Like what happens to a buyer who have the “2021” wheels and needs spare parts. Most buyers dont get wheels sponsored. So they need to last more than just 12 months

    • @jasperverkuijl
      @jasperverkuijl  2 роки тому +1

      I got spare parts for my 3 year old hypers recently so dont worry. Its just a release. The hub internal and spokes are the same (except from t shape nipple) and the old hypers are still for sale so they are not extinct or something 😉
