Beautiful. I like that you get right to the point. You don’t dither. And you are obviously very talented. This composition turned out just sublime. Liked and subscribed.
👋😮❤👏👏👏 oh this precious. I love it. Your videos help. Am recovering from a lot and been told assisted living is where I can recoup. Scary but listening and watching you gives me courage. Thank you Susan 👍😁❤👋
Terri Lynn Oh sweetheart, I’m thankful that the sharing of the art is a blessing and I know things in this old life can get scary. Cling to the hope of Christ and I will be praying for you. God bless you sweetheart.
THIS IS ABSOLUTE GORGEOUS. I THANK YOU FOR THIS TUTORIAL, YOU ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITE PAINTERS.........TFS....AND YOU ALL STAY SAVE AND HEALTHY.....GOD BLESS YOU ALL....:)
Just a couple a days ago I got my gouache set (never used) out of the cupboard and did an underpainting for a pastel painting while thinking 'I never see videos using them for under paintings.' and low and behold you do one! Having never used gouache I over did it, so it is good to see a video of them being used for this purpose: thank you! I really liked the vase after the first glaze of pastel: it reminded me of old crackled china. Lovely painting as always.
Kerry.... what great timing! I"m still learning gouache myself and I'm excited to explore more. Just so you know there is a gouache artists that I have been following and her work is gorgeous. She has so many free resources. Here is a link: www.lenarivo.com/ HAPPY PAINTING!
Thanks so much. My dear husband is very ill in Hospital and it’s just the worst time to be there with Covid-19. I here sirens all day. This is keeping me sane. I couldn’t paint to save myself right now, but my artist brain is following right along ❤️❤️
Robyn... God bless you and your husband. This is such a hard time for those with compromised immune systems. So glad the videos help a bit, even if just to get your mind off things for a moment.
Magnifique ! Comme toujours. Pour moi c'est un ravissement, une explosion de couleurs, qui donne envie de s'y mettre. Je n'ai jamais encore essayé cette procédure. Encore merci!
I happen to love, watercolor painting. I have many soft, pastel fans who aren’t super happy when I share watercolor tutorials. But I’m inspired to do more watercolor now.
Its beautiful. I know the layering is important with pastels. But this is probably too advanced for me. After maybe a tenth colour on the vase I am lost. How do you choose little of this and little of that colour there. Its very confusing for me. I try to watch other videos too but I always end up by being frustrated with the layers. Cant I choose the percect colour and put it there? Does the very first coulour make senae since there are 15 layers over it?
That's a great question. Actually the "value" (lightness vs. darkness) is more important than color for the initial layers. With soft pastel we typically work dark to light. Therefore if I was painting a field of grass for example, I would paint the darker (roots for example) and gradually add lighter layers of grasses that the sun might be shining on. It's a bit hard to describe in words, but I have some beginner videos in a playlist you can look for on my channel that might help to break it down. ;)
Beautiful painting. I've beendoing that same experiment only with watercolors I wasn't happy with, coated with the clear gesso, went over them with pastel. Came out pretty good. Also, where do you get your great music from? I want to start making videos. You just use your phone?
Wonderful, so glad you had some success with the clear Gesso. Also, I get my music from the UA-cam audio library. It’s a great place to get music that doesn’t have a copyright. And yes, I use my phone which is an iPhone 11 for making my videos. I also use iMovie to edit them.
Beautiful painting! And the clear gesso idea is a great tip, thanks! I have been looking for ways to use my watercolor paper with pastel. Can you do as many layers on the watercolor paper with clear gesso on it as you can with the sanded paper? And can you use the clear gesso over a layer of pastel if you want to keep layering (or would that smudge the pastel too much)? Thanks for your tips.
I am trying to work more with gouache because my beloved pastels make my asthma worse. Your tutorials are the best. Please can we have some more gouache tutorials.
That's a great questions......You can use pastels for an underpainting and that is my typical method. However, using different mediums as an underpainting often creates different results. Also, some mediums (such as watercolor, gouache, and acrylic inks) don't take up any tooth of the pastel paper, and thus you can get more layering with the pastels. Hope that helps :)
Oh no! i’m so sorry to hear that. Yes, some mediums will blend a bit when you add clear gesso. However, I usually like my underpaintings a bit loose anyway before I add Pastel. So sorry that happened sweetheart, and maybe you could make it work in your favor in the future.
Exactly. Keep in mind that your need to use a water-friendly surface though with these mediums. Pastel papers like Sennelier LaCarte are not water friendly... but most are. I like to work on watercolor paper... apply my underpainting... then a thin coat of CLEAR Liquid Gesso (which adds grit) and then pastel.
thank you for saying that this is a 'wash'. i have some Tim fisher 400 and you know that it can have water on it so i wanted to know how to do a wash. but why is my question.
I can't understand as always why mix media...when single medium can be used to its full potential. However, I understand acrylic underpainting oils but other than that I can't fathom
sujanith tottempudi Having an underpainting is just another way to achieve a different look with your particular medium...such as pastels. Underpaintings allow you to create a luminous look more easily with your pastels. Try it!
I wouldn't spend money on Arteza, I prefer paints who are really lightfast and real artist quality. It's ok if you you only paint for fun or learn, but if you want to sell your art I would be carefull. Their lightfastratings are a bit unclear - to be nice. It's not be found what method the use for that.
I enjoyed this still life. As much as I love your landscapes I would like to see more still life paintings too. 😊❤
Thanks for that input, @karenleah1477! I'll have to keep that in mind!

This is serendipitious... just yesterday i opened my little 5 paint gouache set and was testing them out and today i see this video....
emmily joshua wonderful!! I’m going to have more gouache tutorials soon!
Love it! You’re teaching style is wonderful. Please do more watercolor.

is it mandatory to use water with the gouache.
Why do you have to do underpainting with gouache? Why not pastels?

Gouache I suppose should be used dark to light according to James Gurney
Yes.... exactly. Very similar to acrylics and even pastels in that respect.
Help!! I tried clear gesso over my gouache and the colours reactivated and got streaky.😊

So basically, one can use pastels on top of watercolour, gouache or acrylics. Is that correct? 🤔

I can't understand the difference if the underpainting would have been pastels or gouache
