This is the first 15 minutes (might do the rest later, they just talk so much it's a lot of work :D): It's been a while since we talked about music made by you- what made you decide to do your own solo project? I've always been fan of risk taking and bold moves. This solo EP is the result of doing everything by yourself. The producer Timppa (Tim) Palmer helped me with mixing and was the co-producer. He's been working with HIM and other great bands. He's been a great mental support to me. Time has passed in a weird manner during this pandemic and now this war also. There's a big, collective athmosphere of desperation, so the songs are not in any way cheerful ones. Even after being extremely busy with HIM in the past, has music still been something you always wanted to keep doing? It's a gift. I have other hobbies as well, but music is there when life gets difficult for me. It's like a comfort cloth for me. With HIM the issue was that we were repeating ourselves and with time we grew apart. Family things, etc. - but that's fine. HIM never left me. The last tour was amazing. (random Ville's cooking corner- try avocado slices on mozzarella pizza, it's surprisingly good) Agents was a big challenge, I was nervous and it showed. The music is very delicate, and that was new to me after HIM. Of course there are some Agents in HIM's music too. (they are well-meaningly joking about Andy Mccoy in this part) How did you respond to being a guest in a band? Was it something you were worried about? Whatever you do in life, there are always issues and worries. Like the famous quote says : the most important thing in life is gardening, and even that is not very important. When you're not pissed off about something, you gotta go to the doctor. Especially if you're finnish (lol). How about after Agents, was it easy to start writing your own music again? It's easy to think in advance to yourself that I'm going to do this and that kind of music - but it's not that simple. It never turns out as you have planned. You need to follow your inspiration, and now that I'm doing this on my own, it is especially nice. I can hyperfocus on whatever inspires me. The downside of that is that you keep doubting your decisions. But I'm like that - indecisive. (some joking about hemorrhoids :D) I like details and polishing. When you perform, that's a different thing. Then you just perform. I especially dig the details in Run away from the Sun, it has 80's synths and Black Sabbath-style church bells. It might not be obvious to the listener, but for me it's important. The reason for publishing the EP was also partly that I don't want to deal with the record labels and hear their opinions on what should be changed. I didn't want to go through that lenghty process and end up having nothing. Our plan was to put together Heartagram records and just publish the EP and see how people react to it and if they wanted to see VV live. That's how we closed the record contract. Btw- when I talk about us, I'm not referring to only myself in a royal manner. I'm talking about me and the dear manager Antti Eriksson. (joking about finnish artist Danny and Alice Cooper talking of themselves in third person).
part two: Were you nervous about publishing the EP after all these years? It is a bit awkward. But it's part of the process to be nervous and excited. As an artist you have to believe your work is good. But what I'm nervous about is how it translates to the listeners. I quit social media for good, I get headaches. I'm pleased that people react on instagram, though. People have been writing bs about us through the years and it gets very personal for no reason and no matter how headstrong you are, well - it's not pleasant. You did the EP all by yourself- what was the hardest part of the project? Well, the weak and the strong parts are both that it's all me. That's the part that people love and hate, which I cannot affect in any way. Did you get a feeling that it's never going to work? Yeah. The existentialistic pondering is very important to me. Why am I doing this and I'm I really able to pull it off? It is slightly tiring, but you can't see the wrinkles when you're wearing a beanie (:D). When you do what you love, it gives and takes a lot of energy. You just have to put everything to it and see what comes from it. Are you going to do a project like this again? The album is now done. But there is a lot of other matters related to it- these interviews for instance. The video shootings, album covers, preparing for the tour... It's all a part of the big picture. Only after all this, perhaps in 2024, I'm able to say anything about the future and what I would do differently. I'm happy about the EP and on the tour we're goin to play HIM songs with the new guys. Are you again excited about touring? It's a bit of a double edged sword. Of course you're sweaty and cramped in the bus etc. but once you are on the tour, it's not that painful. The waiting and preparing is the worst part. I've recharged so that I'm again interested in things. About the song Loveletting - it's like bloodletting, right? It's kind of that, yes. It's a song about when to let go of or hold on to something. Sometimes letting something go is actually giving you something. It's a cycle. During making of the song the times were quite depressing and there was no real future for people. The dark clouds got very dark, and that brought me down as well. How has the pandemic affected you? I was sad that I couldn't visit my parents on Christmas. I wish the world would get a break from all this drama - even a month. (Then they talk about how people get pissed online about trivial things that don't actually matter) This pandemic was also a weird time of silence and devotion. For me it wasn't that difficult but I feel sorry for young people. They have missed so much. I think rock music is making a comeback because of that, the youth wants to rebel. How do you feel about listening HIM's old songs? Do you get emotional memories? I don't really listen to old songs. And in the old songs I only hear the technicalities, what could've been done differently. Some songs work on album, but are very bad live songs. Then there are songs that I don't like that much but they work great live. What are the most important lessons you have you learned throughout your career? Umm... It's good to make mistakes. Sometimes you even have to make the same mistakes many times before you learn. With Agents I learned how to tour different kind of festivals and play with new, different people. It's all an experiment, you screw up, you change some things and you learn. I don't regret anything, really. It's a learning process. As an asthma patient you have to check your hotel pillows for feathers! And don't stress too much. Do you feel different now that it's a solo project - compared to HIM? I'm used to talking about "us" and I accidentally might refer to myself as Ville Valo from HIM. It's a bit lonely, especially during this pandemic time. I don't have friend to talk also non-music related things with, like I did with the bandmembers back then. People have become a bit like zombies during this pandemic. How much did you doubt yourself during the process? I doubt myself often, but once you start doing music, you get a certain feeling from it. I get chills from making the song from a scratch and nobody is there to hurry me. Idk - I'm still a bit confused from all of this. But somehow pieces just fit together and then you realize you have finished everything and you can relax. But after a while you get hungry again and start it all over again. The song making is a living process and I worked very hard and I'm quite tired, but happy. Your life has been a roller coaster (Ville hears it as ho-a-coaster :D) Does it feel like you are where you're supposed to be, in peace? No, not at all. When something comes together, something else comes apart. It's balancing. I look up to grandmothers, they know where happiness comes from; from sunsets and such. Once I get too peaceful, I start getting restless again. Time is almost up- what kind of pieruverkkarit (fart pants) does Ville Valo wear? (It's a reference to an earlier joke about VV being Verkkari-Ville) I ran on treadmill for a while but now I don't have energy for it anymore. The thread from the pants came off and half of my ass is now showing in them. They are quit stylish! :D I should make a promise- I'll always wear a suit. The only reason I don't is that I suck at ironing clothes.
Disclaimer: Ville speaks very figuratively so some parts are my own interpretations. Don't take this translation as the literal, absolute truth! Also I've simplified and shortened it quite a bit but the main points should be there :)
@@Lina-si9kr The war wasn't discussed in particular but he did mention it briefly. He said that these have been dark times since first there was the pandemic and then we went straight into war.
