- N Datta - A Composer Cheated by Fate
(12 December 1927 - 30 December 1987)
Datta Naik was born in a Marathi family in Goa, a Portuguese colony then. He made his mark as a music director in Hindi and Marathi films with the name N Datta. Initially he worked as an assistant to the noted composer Ghulam Haider, who migrated to Pakistan.
Thereafter, he assisted the legendary music director Sachin Dev Burman for a few years. N Datta composed music for a Punjabi film ‘Baalo’ in 1951 but got his break in the Hindi film industry as an independent music director for ‘Milap’ in 1955. ‘Marine Drive’ followed in the same year. His music in the three B R Chopra films ‘Sadhna’, ‘Dhool ka Phool’ and ‘Dharmputra’ stands out even to this day. Between 1955 and 1962, he got a fair number of projects, in which he excelled.
Just when things looked rosy for him, N Datta suffered a heart attack in 1962. He had to stop working for a few months. During that period, many major banners slipped out of his hands. B R Chopra, who was planning ‘Gumrah’, released in1963, found an able replacement in Ravi. That was a great setback for Datta Naik. Slowly, B and C grade films started coming
his way, in which he composed music till 1981. His last six years were plagued by ill-health.
Datta Naik always preferred Sahir Ludhianvi as his lyricist, though he has also worked with other lyricists including Majrooh Sultanpuri and Jaan Nisar Akhtar. His music in Marathi films too was extremely appealing.

इसमें रफी साहब के गाए तीन गीत बेहद प्रसिद्ध हुए थे।
1. पोंछकर अश्क अपनी आंखों से
मुस्कुराओ तो कोई बात बने।
2. ईश्वर,अल्लाह तेरे नाम,
सबको सन्मति दे भगवान।
3. मैंने पी शराब, तुमने क्या पिया
आशा का गाया यह गीत भी उम्दा था।
जान गई में तो जान गई..
ये सारे गीत भो साहिर ने ही लिखे थे।

You forgot film Ek naya raasta,the most hit songs of N.Dutta and SAHIR LUDHIANAVI songs like Ponch ker ashk apni aakhon se muskurao to koi baat baney, Allah tero naam Eashwer tero naam, Chunar more kori, Main ne pi Sharab tum ne kia piya, and jaan gai main to jaan gai etc etc.
Very knowledgeable comments from you. I left this film to restrict the length of the video to not more than 20 mts. Eeshwar Allah tere naam sabko sanmati de Bhagwan became very popular in the early seventies.
The music director of ek hi raasta was hemant kumar and not N Dutta . The lyrics of that film were written by majrooh Sultanpuri. N Dutta 's first film was I think Milaap with geeta bali. The twin version Yeh baharon ka sama in the voices of lata didi and hemant kumar was very popular.
