4 mins and 38 seconds into your videos and already feel like I learned something new. Please keep this going. Appreciating your patients to sit there and really break it down for slower individuals such as i.
Nathan, I'm a relatively new producer, and I have been absolutely binging your videos to help me learn. Your channel is amazing, and I suspect I will continue to come back to it for years to come. Thank you
I hear you - I was the same when I started out. Getting a great performance is definitely key but knowing what things really make a great take and what things can be fixed easily helps a ton
This is a great tutorial! However, part of my old-school brain is thinking, “It’s too much!” I like human imperfections. A feel of something less robotic and more alive? It’s like photoshopping a picture for the cover of a magazine to just taking a cool, raw photo of someone. But I do admire the craftsmanship and expertise.
All the LPX videos I’ve watched, and channels I’ve subscribed to......I cannot believe I’ve never heard of your channel ! Logic Pro Rules and Music tech help guy are both great too! But I’m glad to have found your channel.
Great tutorial! Looking forward to learning more on how to edit on Logic! You don't happen to have any tutorials on how to record/add echo/large room type of sound to vocals, do you?
I don't have that Advanced Tools and Editing option at 3:47 on my Logic Pro X, and I cannot have 3 tool functions shown on that audio window below but just 2. In Preferences I've got Enable Complete Featured checked. I hope that gives me everything I can possibly have.
Don't demolish his natural sense of time! As a professional vocalist, it's actually good when the vocalist lays back a little. Doesn't look perfect on screen but it sounds much better than manually or automatically quantized time.
WHEN YOU WORK IN FLEX, YOU MUST BE CLEAR THAT YOU CAN HEAR THE MECHANICAL CHANGES IN THE VOCAL WHEN STRETCHING AND SHORTING. USE REMOVE SILENCE AND WORK OUT ON THE WRITE TABLE INSTEAD OF :-). COMPLAIN: BUT IT GETS A MUCH BETTER RESULT AND A FASTER WORKING RHYM
Nathan, how would you apply this approach to drums? For example, let's say a drummer does 5 takes, with a few minor clams in each one. Would you comp together the best take, and then export to a new track, and edit timing from there? OR, would you try and edit the underlying takes themselves in order to avoid that step?
I’m amazed that you can edit these without tuning first. I actually have to tune my vocals first before anything bc if I don’t it really REALLY bugs me. The few problems with perfect pitch
Is there a particular hierarchy of steps that are better to use than others? What can go wrong if you do things in a particularly wrong order?

do you think you could make a video on recording acoustic guitar? i tend to make a lot of mistakes in my recordings and i don’t really know to edit it to make it sound smoother and stuff hahah
Great tutorial, I was seriously missing out on a lot of editing tools for my own vocals. Also, your friend Ether has some of the best vocals I've heard in a while, so talented!
You made this look SOOOO EASY, super easy! Encouraging to see that I too can be like you one day!!! thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with the world!
use cmd+T to trim, set secondary tool to fade tool and just press CMD and you can quickly fade your trimmed ends. you can use cmd + your arrow keys to zoom in and out horizontally and you can hold alt/option key and mouse wheel scroll up and down to zoom in and out vertically. or you can hold down alt then hold down mouse wheel and move left and right. up and down. One thing that annoys me is the play head scrolling left and right too fast.
Question: I recorded my whole song,.. did the bounce,… got it saved in my “logic file” now it appears like a “ wave” but I wanna go back to it and edit it! And I can’t find it on my Logic Pro screen… my question,.. “ how can I find songs, that I’ve made,… to edit it them, add more vocals or guitars… thanks bro!
Power to you man, it's great to see that I'm not overthinking things/ to see how other people edit their vocals and this was super helpful! Thank you~~
I prefer if Logic Pro X has options for translucent colors for the regions for better visual to the eyes instead of intense colors for the regions. The waveforms of audios on the regions are fine.
I agree with this - I ended up making the grid lines darker and pop more cause sometimes it is really hard to see through the regions, so yeah agree 100%
For some reason I have Logic Pro but not Logic Pro X. Any tips on why it doesn’t say Logic Pro X in the top left? It also doesn’t look like this either.
Nathan, I’m sure this will be helpful as I get going. I’m a total beginner and I had trouble keeping up, but I hope to get there sooner than later. Any tips on where to start?
Best advice is to just immerse yourself in it and don't worry too much about not knowing everything. Experience does take time and the learning curve is steep at the beginning. Make the music the center of it and learn the tools as you go! Hope that helps at least push you to just get going and not worry too much about the details now
Hello! Thank you so much for this video. I have a question and I can’t find answer anywhere: my home studio is very small, I’m using 2020 MacBook Pro and Logic Pro and when I record vocals, my mic picks up fan noise form my laptop no matter what I do. I have a filter and I even got a mic shield but after a few mins of audio recording my laptop’s noise gets too loud and it just ruins the audio quality. I tried removing noise in logic when I edit my track, but because my songs have a lot of very quiet and soft spots, it doesn’t sound good - it cuts a bit too much or not enough every time. I tried covering my laptop with a blanket but it gets too hot under it so I’m not sure it’s safe… maybe you’ll have a tip? Thank you so much, I’m almost desperate lol
Hi Bro, thanks for the great videos! can you make a tutorial video about mixing vocal crispy / brightly (EQ, Comp, etc) in Logic Pro X. Can't wait to see!
thanks...my issue is once I have got rid of all the blips and I want to turn each track into an audio track to send to someone using a different DAW starting at zero ...I find if I do J all the blips come back...I should know this.would love help here please...
Hey Natha, I like how you explain each details on your video, but I'm new and I will appreciate you if you explain me when you you turn the flex on the minutes 6:25 how your came different from my screen I see your have a piano on the side. How I can turn that on exactly like your screen. And you can put the vocals valume up and down like you explained on the video
Great tutorial. Having watched a few of your videos now regarding Production vs Mixing, I still have some questions about vocals. So do the following steps fall into the Production phase or the Mixing phase, comping, time aligning, de-noise/de-breath/other fixes, pitch correction, adding reverb/delay/other effects?
Nathan you have some great info on your channel! I am curious though. Have you ever done an A/B with flex on and off? I can definitely hear a noticable loss in quality just by having flex on, even without changing a thing. That's what has kept me from using it. Saving for Melodyne. What are your thoughts?
That's very interesting! I've never noticed that myself, but I will have to try that out to see. Melodyne is definitely the top software for that. Interestingly enough, I've got a few other producer friends who have Melodyne but choose to use Flex for it's simplicity and ease of use.
Brilliant video! Does anyone know why the cross fade only works for like one cut for me? [Edit] I had drag set to overlap, not "X-Fade", lol. Logic is one the few apps where the help tab is super useful!
Great video! Super helpful! I have a question about what seems to be a glitch in the software. When I go to try to edit certain audio files, it says "Audio file cannot be changed. Volume or file is locked." Any idea how to solve this problem? Thanks!
Oh, I have a question: so I noticed you didn't merge your comps into a single super take....did you later? I was told to merge but maybe that's not necessary???....thanks.
That's a great idea! I'll put it in my docket. So just to clarify - you're asking how to know when to make some of those creative decisions like doubling and when not to double and such?
super useful Nathan. Also, I liked seeing your credits in High Fidelity, a great show. I interviewed Zoe Kravitz this week about the series. Quick question: do you have or could you do a "next step" type thing where you show at what point, and how (bounce vs. export) you consolidate all these individual portions of the lead vox into a single track?
Just prefer doing most all of my editing manually. More likelihood for artifacts with any algorithmic editing. I rarely use Flex Time too. I edit with scissors and cross fades.
Great video bro, I was wondering. is there a way logic auto deletes the gaps and would that be the same as going through them all individually the way you do? Keep up the good work, you are helping me learn what I should have done years ago!

Fixing timing with flex 🤯🤯 wow I’ve been over working doing it manually . Thank you for that!!

Is there no automatic plugin that lines up all the lead and background vocals? Seems like sth that should exist
Vocalign - it's awesome. This is the manual way if you don't wanna pay money for it. This video is also quite old.

@4:37 -- what is the "loop tool" you mention? what does it do? when i search for that term, it doesn't bring up what you're showing here. thx!
Logic calls it "Cycle" ... if you just hit the key "C" it'll create a cycle or a loop
