    This series is honestly one of the best things I've ever seen on this platform. Never thought this would end up being something so much more than "just" showing the ropes on how to be a musician. It's more like how to be a decent human being. And you, Cory, are one awesome human being. Thanks

    Cory, I have struggled with my identity for a long time. I'm studying a major that I don't particularly enjoy and feel out of place in the world.
    After a lot of reflection, I've come to the conclusion that, no matter what I study or where I work, I am an artist. Even if I get my degree in computer science and work some tech job, I've realized that it doesn't need to be my identity.
    I'm on break between semesters right now and I'm spending damn near every second learning the art of recording, mixing, and mastering. You've been a big inspiration to me with your obsession over tone and do-it-yourself attitude (as well as your killer stage and social media presence.)
    Thank you for this video. I really needed to see something like this to help me keep my head in the game with my music production studies. Keep doing what you're doing.

      Tech and Art and Music go very well together nowadays. If you're learning programming then it could be used in game design and development :) Just a thought. If I'd been born in the 90's instead of before that, then this is the direction I would've gone in. Good luck on your journey :)

    Man I have certainly felt that identity struggle in music. I grew up listening to grunge, nu metal, and hip hop, got into prog and metal later on and then full on into neo soul, r&b, and funk. I studied jazz guitar with a mentor and played in a live hip hop band for over 10 years, fronted a post hardcore band, sang acoustic gigs, and made beats in my bedroom. I thought I had no musical identity until I realized that my wide range of influences was my strong point. Just because I don't do one thing only, doesn't mean I have no identity. Instead my identity is being versatile and loving all kinds of music.

    Cory, thank you so much for this video. I'm also a biracial guitarist with a Chinese dad and white mom. It can definitely add more complexity to discovering what defines you when traditional society views you as somewhat of a grey area. I'm 37 and still figuring it out!

    Cory these musician videos are pure gold. I
    ‘ve been struggling to find my identity too, being an adoptee from SE Asia into a Dutch family. Same with my music. After 40 years I’m finally starting to be able to accept who I am.

  • @RitadeLosAngeles
    @RitadeLosAngeles 3 роки тому

    Thank you, Cory, for bringing your vulnerability to the table in a fun but truly real way. I can really relate to identity issues, as I grew up in the 70's in an Arabic household, when being Arabic in the 70's with the oil shortage was not cool. My next door neighbours told me as a 7 year old, go back to wherever you came from (even though I was born in Los Angeles). I'm first generation American. I am also a gay woman. I am also now 51 and seeing ageism, which is especially cruel as I have had grey hair since I was 28 years old. The list goes on and on. But what I do know is, when I play music for people, I bring joy to them and that brings joy to me. It's the reason why I do it. And that identity thing just completely vanishes. We realise from musician to audience that we're just people who love music. Thanks, Cory, for bringing that to light. You made my day.

    I really love this Cory video series. I also had identity issues. First of all, I'm autistic and I've had a hard time with some people saying "ah, you don't look autistic" (what should an autistic look like?). Second, I am Jewish with an Arab Muslim grandfather. People have always asked me to choose between being Jewish or Arab. I understood that we don't have to choose but to embrace all the things that build our identity. Thank you Cory, greetings, Mordi "The Autistic Guitarist".

    This should be titled "How To *Human* EPISODE 4 : Identity. I had a similar experience to you in high school. I played the drums / percussion in band and always thought I was pretty good. However, there was always that one guy that was always way better than me on the kit. In jazz band, he would get most of the kit parts and I would play vibrophone or guitar. I actually enjoy playing the guitar a lot as well as mallet percussion. The point is though, you know how high school can be and this other guy was labeled as "the drummer" and I was labeled as "the computer nerd." At one point I really did want to be a professional percussionist but being young and moody, I lost my drive easily and just succumbed to my identity as "computer nerd." I'm a professional software developer nowadays, but I never stopped drumming or playing the guitar and have my own home studio doing music as a hobby. I actually studied Audio Engineering, but like a lot of other people I graduated with debt and took the most straightforward way to earning a stable salary right away. Sometimes I like the balance I've struck where work is just work and when I'm off the clock, it's jam time. Other times, I see folks such as yourself being able to record and create music basically whenever they want and get extremely jealous. My job may only be for 8 hours of the day, but as time goes on I feel myself more and more burnt out after work with less energy to create. In the end, I guess I still don't really want to do music or recording as a job but I sure as hell do want to just write and record music all day without the pressure of maintaining a career over my shoulders.

    I can’t understand why anyone would hear what Cory’s putting out into the world and then decide to put him down for it. They’d have to be a very hurt and damaged person.
    A friend recommended me Vulfpeck a few years ago, and I discovered Cory’s own stuff about a year ago. It’s brought nothing but joy and great energy.
    There will always be people who won’t like you, or at least the anxiety of that. Having a clear identity and personal worth is vital for putting yourself out into the world. I think this video has a very important message.

    Great piece of advice! As a musician, producer, multi-instrumentalist and singer myself, identity - as in putting people in compartments - has never been my thing. I wake in the morning and think “who am I today?” Well guess what I’m all of that. Yes I can shred lime crazy, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be a producer, or a singer or that I have to hide from people those sides of me. So good on you in reaching that level of consciousness! I think it’s a real important advice for young teenagers out there wanting to be the next amazing guitar player and categorize themselves - for no reason! 😊

    I'm 29 now and father of a 3 year old little lady. I spend the 3 years BEFORE hear birth studying music at a well reknown college in Germany. When she was born, I started to teach music more and more, because that's a more reliable way of eaking out a living for my family. Then covid hit and I made no money through gigs at all, like ZERO. And now, I am at the university, studying to become a school teacher. I wanted to be a successful musician, but things didn't turn out that way. And I regret not a single second spent studying music, nor a single second working as a teacher to support my family. Now, life has changed again and I'm doing what I'm doing because of things and ideals faaaaar greater than my loley self. Forget yourself as an individuum and find your place and what makes you happy. That thing may change over the course of 8 years, but so does you and so does the world your living in. Thanks for the inspiring videos and music, Cory.
