There were two other helicopters flying with them. Presumably, including his security. Reports say the weather was good when they took off and suddenly changed. The two other helicopters made it back safely.

It's part a diversion / math tactic, but helicopters break down A LOT. No one wants to get stuck, so the other choppers are backups.

An air travel specialist has just declared: "He should have traveled in a military plane to at least have a parachute and an ejection seat. Indeed, unlike a military plane, a helicopter flies too low and does not contain these means safety"
Sanctions have made planes very safe in Iran as they cannot buy Boeing.

The president would not have accepted any suggestions, and the mere fact that the pilot ignored safety protocols to fly a mountainous area in a fog, indicates that very probably the pilot was ordered to fly "anyways". This is how dictatorships work.
The pilot was stuck between a rock and a hard place: either dying by disobeying orders or dying by flying blind towards a mountain.

1988 was 36 years ago. He died yesterday at age 63. So he was a 27 year-old judge sentencing hundreds of people to be executed. Iran was so weird in 1988. Wasn’t the Iran-Iraq War drawing to a close by then? Hadn’t there just been an Iranian passenger jet destroyed midair by the US Navy a year or two before? And hadn’t their archenemy, Saddam Hussein, been nerve gassing Kurds next door, just like he did Iranian troops for years, with French help, right around that time?

The obvious would be Israel or the US. SInce Russia and Iran just signed a defensive pact in March this would be escalation daring them to do something or back down and sue for peace in Ukraine and(or) Gaza...or push to WW3 levels of escalation.

- Israel has a history of assassinating Iranian officials and other high ranking opponents (The founder of Hamas was assassinated, Arafat was assassinated...)
- Israel has been actively trying to destabilise and cause regime change in Iran
- And/or go to war with Iran for 30 years
- Netanyahu has said that they will change the map of the Middle East forever - so they are prime suspects in incidents like this
- Israel's response to the Iranian attack was tame, and they are not know for tame responses
- The hardliners demanded something much stronger against Iran and they have Netanyahu in their pocket at this point
- Israel absolutely has the capacity to take down a helicopter (Russia made Prigozhin's (Wagner) helicopter have an 'accident'); GPS is easy to scramble for them and they could do this when the weather conditions turn)
- There are no accidents in the Middles East; and these so called accidents or events always seem to land in Israel's' advantage, to the point where these religious types are claiming God is helping Israel (9/11, destruction of Israel's major enemies Iraq, and Syria (through clearly inorganic and manipulated 'uprisings'; spread of ISIS; Oct 7th itself clearly aids Israel's goals;...)
- Out of the 3 Helicopters in the convoy, the one that happened to have Raisi and the foreign minister was the only one to crash.
So: Will to do it/capacity to do it/opportunity to do it.
