I’m 2 years late but thank you so much for this video. Everywhere I look reefing and fish keeping seems very difficult. Thanks for giving me the confidence back haha.
Thank you for this video! The best one I’ve seen yet! Most other beginner guide videos just take away excitement by adding to the “worries list”. This video did the opposite. Made me feel excited and positive. Thanks man!
🤣🤣🤣 choose your payment method @ 3:15 ,mate you nailed it hahahhahaa after 8 freshwater tanks atm in the house I want to give a go for saltwater fingers cross
Where was this video when I needed it 6 months ago lol? I’m on my first tank and love it. I have made mistakes along the way but it’s all worth it. The best piece of advice I could give to new hobbyists is to not overreact. Sometimes you can overcorrect something and it can become an even bigger headache.
30+ years off and on keeping tanks I have never got board with it and there is never an end to the learning. I actually have a "experimental tank" where I play with all kinds of things. Currently its toying with Macro-Algae and fertilizers, doing this keeps the interest high. Plus adding macros to the display tank is just fun.
Very timely video Alex as I am 6 weeks into my first tank! I have watched all your videos and most of the BRS "top 486 mistakes" ones. They just scared me but one bit of their advice that stuck was to pick one expert and do what they say - you are my one expert! So I did a lot of research and am now learning by doing. My first disaster was when one of my pair of fire fish got minced up in a power head leaving a gelatinous lump at the bottom of the tank. Except the next day the missing fire fish was back! Seems they quickly got divorced and took up residence in bolt holes at opposite ends of the tank. In fact the smaller fire fish has taken to hanging about with my pair of clown fish, which have decided to live right at the surface next to the weir so I can't see them. I have yet to work out what the fire fish size gelatinous lump was!!
A lot of products today are “good enough” whether it’s an aquarium, lighting, skimmer, pumps, etc. we reefers spend countless hours researching the 1% that makes these products different so that we make the absolute best decision possible. This isn’t needed of course, just part of our obsessive reefing nature.
I recommend a fish only if your scared and hey once you get comfy get your feet wet with coral....a softie tank is my recommendation for any beginner....but no bs there is alot of coral that might love your tank and not mine or the next guy so always keep trying to improve and learn...its all anoyone of us can do....take care alex great video and advice
@@fishfan2 I thought that to but my phosphates are at 0.05 and my nitrates are at 20 so idk what the issue is, all though they are doing better now than they were but I still can’t keep pulsing Xenia in my tank
So glad I found your channel..! Going to pick up our first saltwater tank today! 125 gallon tank and accessories. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, understanding, and experience with everyone!
Only thing i can give a counter recommendation on is if the budget allows def get a mp10 or 40 powerhead....the china ones are pos ive bought several and wound up with mp10s at the end of my journey
Great video mate. I’m starting my aqua one 160 3ft mini reef. Really good value. Been told to replace the pump and skimmer. Gonna start with the rock sand and a couple of clown fish and hopefully the Picasso trigger will get along in there. Then get star fish and invertebrates/coral later 🔥🐠❤️
Hi love you're simplistic way you describe and explain marine fish keeping . Would love some advice on stocking my fish tank it's 72 x 24 x30 recently closed it down and changed to marine . I've got carib sea live sand bottom and abt 80lbs of carib rocks n shapes . I'd like to get a colourful look with soft corals maybe advance later to harder corals . I've put 6 clown fish already in what would you recommend to build up on next please thanks.
Best thing is to go to your local fish shop regularly to see what fish you like. Or check out liveaquaria.com, then do a bit of research and choose what you like 🙂
I just can't wait to get my first tank!! I think I am reaching the point you mention in this video of diminishing returns. Research is still a lot of fun BUT I am dying to get my hands wet! Big thanks to all your lovely videos though for helping me get informed and making it seem less mystical. Still don't understand dosing though.
Don't overthink dosing. You will not need it when starting in general. Water changes are likely enough to replace minerals used by growing corals, unless you start with lots of so called "sticks" such as acropora. It's when water changes cannot keep up that you may need dosing and then it's mainly a case of deciding which method/make to use.
@Freaky Goblin this is extremely helpful, thank you so much! To be honest, while I do understand the appeal of acropora, I was actually thinking of just going with torches, GSP, and some pulsing xenia for a looong time, if not forever. I just love the look of the beginner corals! The only SPS I really love is plating montipora. Do you think water changes will be enough to replace calcium ect. if I go for monti, or will I likely end up having to dose calcium at that stage?
@@lokeyacolyte2145 That's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string as there are no hard and fast rules. All about results from testing. You will need to start dosing at some point in all likelyhood, just don't fret about it to start with.
Agree with most of this although I disagree about fish. Knowing which fish are suitable is important. After all you are talking about living beings. Obvious example being the Copperband which I would not recommend to people starting. People should also remember that a lot of people start with a Fish Only Tank which doesn't need the expense of lighting and slowly move onto corals when they can afford it.
I use a canister for my 55gal and everything is fine. I just recommend going one one canister size than your tank gallon. Ex I use a 75g canister for my 55g tank
@@ReefDork Okay I'm struggling to even budget the initial set-up of my freshwater tank to a marine/reef one. I'll think I will pass on the fish that costs 8s as much as my entire budget!

Yup ik someone who goes overboard with params and he can't keep any softies alive. I'm semi cautious with parameters and my softies are thriving
For me softies are way harder to keep then any coral, I have SPS thriving more than my softies
@@truereefkeeping6022 Your nitrates and phosphates must be near or at zero. Softies thrive off that stuff

Great job. Good content.
Do I need an expensive light for marine fish only tank? And can I keep an anemone with normal aquarium light with fish?
Not for fish, no although you might find non-marine spec lights give you algae. Anemones do require good lighting though.
great video!
What heater would u recommend because nearly all the heaters I’ve had all failed including a ehiem jager
I've never had a heater fail. I'd go for Schego titanium...
Hey could you do a tutorial on seething up a sump inside of a Red Sea reefer

Deciding between a WATERBOX 7225 or a CADE 1800 as a room divider. Your thoughts?
Haven't seen either but Cade sound very good to me and a cut above Waterbox
1:18. No I don’t. I’m not there yet… 😂 😆 😝

ich/ick im having a battle with it 💪
Qt. Go fallow 82 days ❤
Thanks
Can you run a salt water tank on a good cannister filter. I don’t have the space for a sump
I've never done it but apparently you can - I'd just add a few fish to start, not too many, and see how it goes.

Wrought iron butterflyfish
Was that your bumblebee shrimp.
Yep 🙂
@@ReefDork do they eat frozen food then thought they only eat the tubes of starfish like the harlequin.

Wrought iron butterflyfish. Rarely imported and expensive when it is, but looks awesome!
