You used to be able to sell wheat to this windmill, and combined with the windmill on trollheim you can buy wheat from it was how you did the infinite money exploit. Sadly, as you predicted they patched it out before you got here. Machines do continue processing while you're elsewhere, they just don't add the results to your inventory until you return.
if anything i would say, yes you ARE an evil god just where the first gold ...treasure was, you left a bar of gold i think the columns with gold...things to put on them are the tasks of heracles/hercules
